2 NORTHWEST MOSQUITO ABATEMENT DISTRICT 147 W. Hintz Rd. Wheeling, IL Phone: (847) Fax: (847) Mosquito Update July 28, 2017 NUISANCE MOSQUITOES: Significant numbers of nuisance mosquitoes have arrived as expected due to heavy rainfalls from July 10 th to the present. The increase in nuisance mosquitoes is currently noticeable and NWMAD has engaged its Night Spray program on July 27th to help reduce their numbers. It is possible that additional nuisance mosquitoes may be generated due to ongoing flooding along the Des Plaines River, however, that is slowly receding. Thankfully, no additional significant rainfall is expected in immediate future. Crews continue to treat all flood water areas containing developing mosquito larvae. Nuisance mosquitoes will bite during the. daytime as well as evenings; especially, at sunset and just before sunrise. (see New Jersey trap counts below). CULEX MOSQUITOES: Culex mosquito numbers have been decreasing (see gravid trap counts below). However, at this point in time with the Des Plaines River flooding starting to recede it is expected that low lying water areas will continue to hold water and start to stagnate as temperatures start to rise typically in August. If this happens and stagnant water is generated it will increase Culex mosquito numbers that prefer to lay their egg batches in such waters. Culex mosquitoes are considered the primary mosquito species in our territory that are capable of transmitting West Nile virus to humans, birds and other animals. Typically; it is believed, that West Nile virus is first amplified in the mosquito/bird populations before humans are noticeably infected. As more birds become infected bitten by infected Culex mosquitoes they infect more mosquitoes and the cycle amplifies. Birds develop prolonged; elevated, West Nile virus levels in their blood making them more efficient hosts for West Nile amplification. Humans then become infected after they are bitten by West Nile virus infected Culex mosquitoes. Although Culex mosquito numbers collected in our gravid traps remain below our five-year average their numbers WILL BE INCREASING due to stagnant water abundance after the flooding rains. Residents need to take precautionary steps to avoid being bitten by these mosquitoes. (See Reducing the Risk of Mosquito Bites below). Residents of the District are strongly advised to continue inspecting their properties for stagnant water filled containers that may produce these mosquitoes. Examples of mosquito production areas encountered by homeowners can be viewed at: The most prevalent Culex production habitats holding water on homeowner properties are: water containing leaf & seed clogged rain gutters, buckets, unmaintained swimming pools, un-rimmed tires and virtually any container holding water and organic debris (i.e. leaves, grass, etc.) for 7 days or longer. Crews have finished treating storm water catch basins for Culex mosquito control throughout the District and will be continuing to treat for these mosquitoes that are produced from any other likely stagnant water container sources that these mosquitoes prefer to lay their eggs in. After recent rainfall, ditches, culverts and other high organic water areas may become important production areas for these mosquitoes if the water doesn t evaporate before the mosquito larvae become the adult biting mosquitoes.

3 MOSQUITO VIRUS SURVEILLANCE IN ILLINOIS: NWMAD has detected WNV in 29 Culex mosquito batches collected from gravid traps. 628 Culex mosquito batches have been tested thus far for West Nile virus infection in NWMAD territory. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has reported West Nile virus in mosquitoes (315 batches), and 7 birds from 33 counties in Illinois as of this point in time. See the following link for West Nile virus detections ( ONE human WNV case has been reporteded by IDPH in 2017 from Will County. It is essential that people avoid biting mosquitoes and wear protective clothing and mosquito repellent as required. NWMAD WEBSITE: The NWMAD website has additional information on homeowner mosquito control practices. The Mosquito Update newsletter will be available at this site as well as other information on NWMAD contacts, mosquito information links, employment opportunities and mosquito night spray schedules. NIGHT SPRAYING: Night spraying for the current biting nuisance mosquitoes has begun and future scheduling will be posted on our website. Please check: for future updates. REDUCING THE RISK OF MOSQUITO BITES: As temperatures increase, avoid outdoor activity if possible from dusk to dawn when the mosquitoes bite the most. If you do go out wear light colored, loose fitting, protective clothing and insect repellent (always read label warnings and directions). Make sure mosquitoes do not enter homes through unscreened or damaged doors and windows. Residents are encouraged not to create mosquito harborage or resting areas on their properties. Make sure tall grassy areas are trimmed and other unnecessary vegetation is cut back. If plants must be watered do so in the morning so the vegetation and soil has a chance to dry making it less attractive to mosquitoes. Empty any containers holding stagnating water for 7 days or longer like: tire casings, birdbaths, clogged rain gutters, flowerpots and rain barrels that may produce mosquitoes. Neglected swimming pools may produce thousands of mosquitoes. Call the District to report any large stagnant water areas that remain wet for more than 7 days and do not contain fish. Mike Szyska, Director ( mszyska@nwmadil.com) PLEASE FORWARD THIS INFORMATION TO APPROPRIATE DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES.
