1 Introduction to Northwest Mosquito Abatement District Patrick Irwin, MS. PhD. Entomologist NWMAD 147 W. Hintz Rd. Wheeling, IL nwmadil.com Northwest Mosquito Abatement District Formed square miles served 1
2 The District by the Numbers 12 full time employees 50 summer employees 10,000 water sources and 65,000 catch basins surveyed and treated each year. Board of Trustees ~750,000 people served by NWMAD Budget of $ 3 million annually ~ $ 3 dollars per 100,000 of property value Mission of NWMAD Manage mosquito populations that inhibit peoples ability to enjoy the outdoors and/or mosquitoes that can carry and transmit diseases to humans. Use integrated pest management (best management practices) to manage mosquito populations. These include: adult and larvae mosquito surveillance, larval abatement, adult treatment, mosquito habitat source reduction and public education. 2
3 District Response to WNv Larval surveillance and abatement in over 10,000 aquatic sites, inspections and treatment of over 65,000 storm water catch basins. 39 adult mosquito traps run 7 days a week throughout the district Vector mosquitoes tested for WNv in lab Adult treatment if nuisance mosquitoes > 35 per trap for 3 straight days or WNv detected 2 consecutive days from same trap. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Grant. 5 year collaboration between academic institutions, public health departments and mosquito abatement districts. Increase surveillance and understanding of mosquito and tick borne disease. Loyola University, Northshore MAD NWMAD Efficacy of storm water catch basin abatement. Michigan State, University of Maryland, NSMAD, NWMAD Genetic markers for subterranean mosquitoes and ability to transmit WNv. University of Wisconsin, University of Illinois, NSMAD and NWMAD Efficacy of larvicide and adulticide on mosquito biting rates. 3
4 Questions? NWMAD 147 W. Hintz Rd. Wheeling, IL nwmadil.com Zika Virus The mosquito species that spread Zika virus are not found in the Chicago area, but can occur in southern Illinois.
