Page 3 The Rescue Report When it became clear that our Intake numbers were continuing to decline, the EGRR Board decided to look for a way to help Goldens in need outside our area and if possible, bring some home to the Pacific Northwest. Surely there were parts of the country where Golden Rescue groups still had more dogs than adoptive homes. What we found was that virtually all Golden Retriever Rescue groups in the US have more adopters than they have purebred Goldens to place and if they are faced with a sudden influx of dogs, it makes more sense logistically to work with neighboring rescue groups than one as far away as EGRR is. Lady waiting patiently at the airport. Our research did turn up the interesting fact that stray Goldens are a huge problem in Taiwan. Large scale breeding operations produce many puppies that are sold to people who live in very small apartments. When the dog gets too big for the apartment, the owner turns the dog loose on the streets or dumps her in the mountains. If the dog is lucky, she ends up at a shelter. These facilities are reportedly not very nice but better than living on the streets or in the mountains where they are frequently injured or killed. Fortunately, there are Rescue groups in Taiwan who take these dogs from local shelters, nurse them back to health including providing any and all needed vet care or surgery and then pay the costs associated with flying them to a Rescue group on the west coast. Several Golden Retriever rescue groups in California have been importing Goldens from Taiwan for years now at the rate of over 100 per year! Armed with this knowledge, EGRR teamed up with Golden Bond Golden Retriever Rescue from Portland Oregon, as they, too, were interested in bringing in some dogs. We were then hooked up with Lingling Wong and Bata Wu, volunteers in Taiwan. They ed us pictures, bio s, x-rays and health records on several dogs. From these, EGRR chose a 4 yr old female named Lady and Golden Bond took Lady s first day in the U.S.

Page 4 3 Goldens and a Lab. In an effort to get to know the Golden Bond volunteers better, they joined the EGRR volunteers for dinner before going to the airport to pick up the dogs. Everything went incredibly smoothly and although clearly confused, Lady was happy to be out of her kennel and to be able to go to the bathroom after a 13 hour flight! Due to the heat in Taiwan, they shave all of the dogs so Lady arrived looking more like a lion than a Golden. Fortunately, despite her rough life, her temperament is all Golden and she has adjusted incredibly well to life in the US. She s gradually learning English and has an amazing sit now especially a meal time. We knew that she had a chronic leg injury but had no other specifics. It turns out that she must have gotten her right leg caught in a snare trap which resulted in severe damage to her Achilles tendon. She is able to walk and even run if she s motivated enough but the right leg tires quickly. The damage to the muscles was so extensive that surgery is not an option so she has a brace that she wears on her walks which she is getting used to and which seems to help. Lady has just been adopted and will soon go to her forever home where she will have a Golden brother named Barney. Nancy Kiesler Volunteer, EGRR Lady waiting patiently at the airport. Lady Lying in the Grass The primary focus of Evergreen Golden Retriever Rescue (EGRR) is on rescuing Golden Retrievers in need. Driven by our belief in responsible pet ownership, we are dedicated to ensuring for dogs such as these a future of care and affection.

Page 5 Can you believe how time flies? In less than two months, EGRC will be hosting the 2014 Specialty on August 8, in conjunction with the Nisqually Kennel Club Shows on the 9th and 10th. Saturday will also be a Designated Specialty, and Sunday is a Supported Entry. There are great trophies, lots of fun activities and even very affordable t-shirts and polo shirts so that you can bring home a memory. I know I m really looking forward to these great events! Potluck Dinner Party Please join us ringside for great food and camaraderie at the Potluck Dinner beginning 1-1/2 hours after Best of Breed. Bring your favorite dish to share, and partake in the delicious offerings of your friends and fellow exhibitors. A contest for the best appetizer, main meal and dessert gives everyone the chance to be rewarded for their creativity and culinary skill. Please bring along your own drinks and chairs. If you have any questions, Kathy Fisk at billfisk1@gmail.com. Wet Dog Contest Let's cool off and have some fun at the end of a great show day! Bring your dog or puppy to participate in our first Wet Dog Contest, being held concurrently with the potluck dinner party and judged by Wayne Miller. The judging criteria will be based on these two sentences from the Breed Standard: "Coat: Dense and water-repellent with good undercoat. Outer coat firm and resilient, neither coarse nor silky, lying close to body; may be straight or wavy." Each dog will be wetted down ringside for exactly the same amount of time, and all ages and genders will be judged together. There will be trophies for 1st through 4th place, and the first place winner receives a 4" x 6" pewter statue by Dennis Springer of the Golden in the field. This is a completely casual and fun way to celebrate all of our dogs, so please plan to join in! There will be a $5 entry fee. If you have questions, contact Ken Matthews at kbmatthews@earthlink.net. We re also going to have a 4-to-6 month puppy competition, so please bring your babies to have a great first jaunt around the ring! Don t forget to contribute to the Silent Auction and Raffle. Julie Matney is putting this together, and it should be fabulous! Questions? Want to volunteer to help? Contact Hach Hachtel, Show Chair, at 360/ or him at kirosgoldens@comcast.net.

Page 7 Scent Hurdle Relay Racing By Nancy Light This dog sport is a relay race between two teams of 4 dogs. Each dog must jump 4 hurdles, then go to the scent box, divided into 4 sections, find its owners article, and race back over the hurdles. Then the next dog is sent. At the start of the race, each handler takes a wooden scent article, (all the same size) and places it in in one section and returns to their dog. Then the race is on. A box handler, positioned at the box, then replaces each article with a dummy article after the dog selects it so that each dog has four to choose from. The jumps are set 10 feet apart with the box set 12 feet beyond the last jump. The jump heights, just like for Flyball, are set to the height of the smallest dog on the team, so we were always glad to find a smaller dog, when forming a team. The heights are set from 7 to 16, 4 below the height of the dog at the shoulder. When I was playing the game, we broke down the rings at about noon for the Washington State Dog Obedience Club trials and had a demo. You definitely would not want to be running obedience rings while this was going on, as the dogs and crowd would have been a big distraction. Even more exciting was when we were asked to perform as half time entertainment at the Seattle Supersonics basketball games and I understand it was one of the crowd s favorites. Somewhere along the way scent hurdle racing morphed into Flyball where the dogs instead of doing scent work, hit a spring loaded box which releases a tennis ball. This made things go much faster and seemed more exciting to the crowd. Modern teams have perfected every aspect of the run from the turn at the box to the speed of dogs passing. I hear that a speed record was recently set by a US team, Touch and Go, with a time of seconds. I tried Flyball too, but always appreciated the greater skill of the scent work and also felt it improved my dogs confidence and accuracy on the Utility scent articles. Club events in this period included our awards banquet with Mexican buffet and the ice cream social meeting. We do like to eat at EGRC. Members are also hard at work on upcoming summer fall events including our Specialty, a WC/WCX, and a combined TD/TDX test. The Specialty is at a new location, in conjunction with an all-breed show. Our Independent will be on Friday (August 8) followed by a Designated Specialty on Saturday and a Supported Entry on Sunday. That term Designated Specialty was not familiar to me, but it means that with the concurrence of the host club (the all-breed club) and AKC, the Golden classes will be considered a Specialty and we can hold special events such as Sweepstakes. The judge for the regular Golden classes is just part of the all-breed judging panel, but a win would be considered a Specialty win. In a Supported Entry is our Club offers special prizes for the breed and obedience winners. A big thank you to Nancy Light for allowing us to print her GRNews column.

Page 8 Dazzle is by far our most enthusiastic "door greeter" (and those who have met her know that I have put a very positive twist to that activity). When her mother was whelping her second litter of puppies, Dazzle was beside herself. There were new people in the house, strange noises were coming from the den and she was not allowed to either greet or see what was causing the commotion. Of course the whelping was taking place in the evening and into the wee hours of the next morning. During that time, Dazzle was either barking or scratching at the door. Finally a crate was brought out and she was forced to settle down. The next morning Dave emerged from the bedroom and I emerged from the den both of us with bloodshot eyes and blurry vision. While making a cup of coffee, I looked out into the great room and there was Dazzle completely passed out and asleep on the sofa. These words just came to mind. It's been a hard days night...and I've been working like a dog It's been a hard day's night I should be sleeping like a log -- And I am! -- Having brothers and sisters is hard work!!

Page 9 Deb Pampiks and Jackson won High in Trial at Inland Empire Golden Retriever Club show on May 23, This was Jackson's second High in Trial in 3 times showing. He earned his CD this time. What a great start to Jackson's show career as these were his very first 3 times in the obedience ring! ~Frank and Deb Pampiks Sweetgold Cleared For Takeoff O-TN-N, CL1, CCA, "Jett," attended the NADAC agility trial on June 8 at Argus Ranch and qualified in 3 of 4 runs. He earned his 6th "Q" in Novice Tunnelers (2nd place), completing his Outstanding Novice Tunnelers title. He also earned his first "Q" in Novice Touch and Go (3rd place) and his second "Q" in Novice Jumpers (1st place). ~Gwen Sieben
