2 Welome! In The Treasure Box: Mo Willems We are excited to welcome your children to our book cl! Our goal is for your children to LOVE books and learning. Hopefully, they will eagerly anticipate the books we pull out of our treasure chest each week! We ll be having fun together while focusing on these skillss throughout the year: 6 Early Reading Skil lls: Print Motivation: Being interested in and enjoying books Print Awareness: Noticing print, how to follow words on a page Vocabulary: Knowing the names of things Letter Knowledge: Knowing letter names and sounds & how they are different from each other as well as how they work together Phonological Awareness: Being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words Narrative Skills: Being able to tell stories and describe things and events At the end of each class, your child will bring home a book that we ve discussed and read. They can add it to their own treasure chest which they will be bringing home after the first class! 3 First Class/ Treasures In The Treasure Box: Ellen Stoll Wals sh We had a fun week getting to know your children and introducing them to the magical books of Mo Willems! Hopefully your child has found a special place at home for their treasure chest. Inside, they had their first treasure: a book that they can read to you at home. This week they will bring another book that focuses on simple sight words, color words, follows a pattern and has picture clues. They can add this second treasure to their box when they bring it home on Monday! We also made a Piggie and/or Gerald puppet with whom they can Small Group Project 11:15 read their books or reenact the story. Making ice cream and eating it, Art/ Writing: Marble Mouse Painting creating ice cream art and writing about who they would share it with Dictate/write about what is happening in your (come in and see our art/writing wall!), and play dough sundaes were painting also highlights to last week! The kids pretended the marble was a mouse as it rolled through the red, yellow and blue paint, then they told a story about their mouse s adventures. Hopefully they have been reading their take home book at home and acting it out with their mice;0). *This Monday 10/28: Please bring a stuffe ed animal pet (dog, cat, fish, bird, lizard, etc.) for our Pet Show! 5 Last Week: In The Treasure Box: Julia Donaldson n We hope everyone had a nice Veteran s Day! The previous week we went on our trip to Denny s Pet World and it was a complete success! The children saw a great variety of animals and were able to touch most of them (tortoises, bunnies and iguanas- oh my!). The metro bus ride also went smoothly. When we got back, we read Dog s Colorful Day by Emma Dodd and created our own colorful day take home readers. The students also created a giant snake out of paint and used stamps to add texture. We wrote about our highlight of the trip and thanked Denny s Pet World for the tour. I delivered it this week, so the next time you visit, look for it hanging on the walls in the back! Shared Reading on Pocket Chart - Buddy read The Gruffalo Story & retell story using Story Wheels Art/Reading: 10:15 Small Group Project 11:30 Gruffalo Recipes/ Shared writing: Owl Ice Cream, Scrambled Snake, Roasted Fox, Gruffalo Crumble Each group will create their own unique recipe! Word Work: Match the Gruffalo descriptions to the correct picture Math: Order the characters 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th according to how we meet them in the story Playdough: Make a Gruffalo. Who did the Gruffalo see? 6 Last Week: The Gruffalo In The Treasure Box: Eric Litwin & James Dean We met the Gruffalo and went on a scavenger hunt looking for the characters and decriptive parts of the Gruffalo: with his terrible tusks, terrible claws, terrible teeth in his terrible jaws, knobbly knees and turned out toes, a poisonous wart at the end of his nose. His eyes are orange his tongue is black, and purple prickl es all over his back. Then we practiced retelling the story using our story wheels. We also did word work in our books and looked at the pictures to help us retell the story. We ate a tasty Gruffalo snack, created Gruffalos and watched the wonderful movie! 7 Last Week: Pete The Cat And His F In The Treasure Box: Chris Van Dusen Four Groovy Buttons We had so much fun with the cool cat, Pete, and the moral of the story: It s All Good. The kiddos stracted buttons, sorted buttons, and played guess the rule for buttons (ask them to show you how to play at home!). We sang the song that goes with the book and then we created our own Pete The Cat art and put some buttons on his coat as well as some that popped off. They counted up how many buttons were all together, how many were off the coat and how many were left on and came up with straction sentences! 8 Last Week: If I Built A House In The Treasure Box: Mem Fox If I Built A House by Chri is Van Dusen We were architects, engineers, construction workers and dreamers last week! The kids drew up plans of their dream houses after being inspired by our book. They used a variety of materials to construct a model (these came home on Monday but we kept the plans and took photos). We were amazed by the focus and enthusiasm of the entire group during this project. During snack, they also constructed houses out of graham crackers. Literacy: Where Is the Green She eep? 9 In The Treasure Box: Jan Brett/ Holidays Last Week: Where Is the Green Sheep? By Mem Fox We discussed the concept of opposites in our book and then went on a hunt to find opposites and pair them with each other. For art, we made sheep using the end of a toilet paper roll and paint of our choice. Also, we worked on our math skills by extended patterns of farm animals and sorting them according to size, shape and color. We created green sheep with mandarin oranges and veggie booty for snack!
