Proud Lions News The Official Newsletter of Manassas Lioness Lions Club, Manassas, VA OCTOBER 2014 Web site: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SEPTEMBER DINNER MEETING At left: District Governor Jim Ryan inducted our newest member, Pat Dekkers. Below: The District Governor presented 10-year chevrons and congratulatory letters to Pat Nichols (left) and June Rich. At left: Woo-Hoo, we did it! Past Region Chair Sheryl Bass (left) presented MLLC President Anita Waggy with the Club Excellence Award we earned for Lion Year

MEMORIAL SERVICE SCHEDULED We were saddened to learn of the September 1 passing of former Manassas Lioness Lion Kathryn Kit Burns. Kit had been a member of the Club for five years until recent health issues kept her from being active. Kit will be remembered for her wit and ready smile, and of course her signature bright red PT Cruiser. She was always ready to help out behind the scenes at Club events, particularly the Vendor Fair. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 18 at Buckhall United Methodist Church, Moore Drive, Manassas. Pat Nichols is getting a group of members together to attend. Please contact Pat for more details, TOILETRY BAGS SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED! The latest phase in the Toiletries Bags Project has been completed! Eighteen bags were dropped off at NVFS/SERVE on Friday, October 3 for distribution as needed at the Women s Shelter. This is an ongoing Club project, and we will continue to collect travel/hotel-sized toiletries, fabric and skinny ribbon. The fabric and ribbon are used to make drawstring bags to contain the items. This batch included: shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, toothbrush and toothpaste. A handy safety pin is used to close the bag and attach a tag denoting Compliments of the Manassas Lioness Lions Club and a list of contents. The next phase of this project will be collecting and assembling more bags for the Christmas Season. If you have travel/hotel-sized shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, toothbrushes, and toothpaste available to donate, please give to Susan MacAuley at the meetings or call to arrange a more convenient pickup or drop-off. We may include powder and razors as well. Fabric and ribbon is also needed. Fat Quarters work really well for providing a variety of colors and patterns for the bags. Holiday prints would be great for the Christmas bags. The best ribbon is the skinniest ribbon (1/8 in width) to make the drawstrings. I want to thank our team for their help with this batch: Katheryn Williamson, Nancy Sliger and Marie Robinson. Thanks, Ladies! You made the task so much more fun! --Susan MacAuley 2 Above: Susan MacAuley (left) and Nancy Sliger

LAKE RIDGE LIONS CLUB SELLING WHITE HOUSE ORNAMENTS Traditionally, our Club supports other area Lions Clubs that offer the collectible White House Christmas Ornaments as a fundraiser. The Lake Ridge Lions will be offering the ornaments again this year for the cost of only $19 (the usual price at other outlets is $21). Manassas Lioness Lion Nancy Sliger will be coordinating the sale of ornaments to members of our Club for the Lake Ridge Lions. Please contact her at if you re interested in ordering. Checks should be made payable to Lake Ridge Lions Club Charities. The 2014 White House Christmas ornament honors the administration of Warren G. Harding, who served as the twenty-ninth president of the United States from 1921 to As a young boy, Harding dreamed of being a locomotive engineer a wish that was to come true for 51 minutes when as president, he took over the controls on the Alaskan railroad during the Voyage of Understanding, his famous transcontinental speaking and sightseeing tour. The Presidential Special, the train that carried President Harding west at the outset of his ambitious voyage and that would tragically carry his casket back east following his sudden death, just two months later, is the inspiration for our 2014 ornament. Decorated with gold tones and enamel finishes, the 33rd annual White House Christmas Ornament is our first ornament to be comprised of two pieces, which can be hung as two separate ornaments or linked together. The locomotive is a detailed miniature replica of one of several steampowered locomotives that pulled the Presidential Special; it is attached to the coal car that held its fuel. The other miniature car is the Superb, the president s private heavyweight Pullman car. The last car on the Special, the Superb was outfitted with a public address system. President Harding made appearances and delivered speeches at stops across the country from a platform at the back of the car. The last known photograph of President Harding is an image of him on the Superb shortly before his death in a San Francisco hotel on August 2, On August 3, President Harding s casket was placed on board the Superb and began a return trip to Washington, D.C., during which an estimated 3 million people paid their last respects. Information courtesy of The White House Historical Association OCTOBER IS MEMBERSHIP MONTH! Why not invite a friend to come along with you to the dinner meeting on the 20 th to see what the Manassas Lioness Lions are all about! 3

GIRLS NIGHT OUT GOES BACK TO BASICS Plan to come out and join The Fun Bunch for dinner at Ruby Tuesday s, 9504 Liberia Ave. (across from Walmart). Date is Wednesday, October 8, and we ll meet at the restaurant at 6 p.m. Ruby s menu features a little something for everyone s taste burgers, pasta, seafood, steaks, chicken, ribs, and a sumptious salad bar! For more information, visit Please RSVP to Susan MacAuley no later than noon on the 8 th so she can make sure we have a large enough table reserved. Contact Susan at or trustyred@aol.com. WHITE CANE SLATED FOR OCTOBER 11 On Saturday, October 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wellington Giant, the Manassas Lioness Lions will be doing their fall White Cane fundraiser. With monetary contributions collected from the community, our Club is able to offer assistance with eye exams, glasses, and many other sight and hearing needs. The Cub will also be collecting the following for recycling: cell phones, inkjet cartridges, digital cameras/recorders, GPS units, hand held games, laptops, ipads, ipods, game consoles, and E-book readers. If you can lend a hand from either 10 a.m. to noon, or from noon to 2 p.m., contact our Sight and Hearing Chair Robyn Zweiban at or mpsczweiban@verizon.net. SAY HELLO TO OUR NEW LION TAMER! Beth Oravec, one of our newest members, has graciously agreed to serve as our Lion Tamer for the rest of the Lion Year. The Board position became open after Traci Connolly resigned from the Club because of work commitments. Beth transferred into our Club in June from Lake of the Woods Lions Club in Locust Grove (Orange County), Virginia where she had been a member for about 10 years. She served as a Director on their Board for several terms, as well as being Tail Twister and on the Lion Tamer committee. She was named Lake of the Woods Lion of the Year three years ago. Beth recently moved to Manassas and is sharing a home with her twin sister, Pat Dekkers, who recently joined our Club as well. Beth enjoys grandma-time with her 4 young grandchildren, likes to putter around the yard and collects Depression glass. And, she s still holding down a part-time accounting job to boot. Thanks for stepping up to help us out, Beth! Our Club will surely benefit from your past Lions experience. 4

TROOP BOX PROJECT CONTINUES THIS YEAR Preliminary plans are underway for the Holiday Boxes for the Troops program to be a Zonewide project again this year. You may remember that our club spearheads the project and collects funds from all clubs who wish to participate so we can purchase the items in bulk. Box contents are based on items that servicemen and women have told us they need, and we do have size constraints because of the shipping boxes. The things that we DO ask to be donated are Beanie babies and movies on DVD. If you have any of these items you d like to donate, contact Pat Nichols, or nuhse4u@verizon.net. HELP NEEDED AT OCTOBER 14 SCREENING EVENT Our Club is scheduled to be at Signal Hill Elementary School, 9553 Birmingham Drive, Manassas with the sight and hearing screening van on Tuesday, October 14. As of now, we only have four volunteers signed up, and we really need more. If you can help out that day, even just for a couple of hours, please contact Ann Marie Macdonald, We will be checking vision and hearing on about 170 children. Starting time is 9:30 a.m.; volunteers need to arrive about a half hour earlier for set-up. END OF SUMMER DINING AL FRESCO MARKS SEPTEMBER GNO The Girls Night Out gang gathered on the courtyard at City Grille last month for an evening of dining on the patio. Left to right: Lois Steele, Katheryn Williamson, Ann Marie Macdonald, Susan MacAuley, Marie Robinson, Barbara Kirk and Teresa Kaufman. 5

Remember that the Club will reimburse the registration fee for any Manassas Lioness Lions who attend! Please contact Amy Newman with any questions,

CHILDREN S BOOK DRIVE NOW UNDER WAY We re well into the swing of things in our children s book drive! This is the project where we collect gently used children s books from the community and distribute them to children in local schools who might not have access to books at home. We ve expanded collection points this year to include St. Thomas United Methodist Church, Manassas; Gainesville United Methodist Church, Gainesville; Grace United Methodist Church, Manassas; Manassas City Police Station; and Manassas Park Police Station. The drive will run through November 15. Community Services Director Pat Nichols will be sending out periodic notifications of what areas she needs help with, whether it s the actual pick-up of the books, the sorting by age level or delivering them to the schools. This is one of our easy and fun projects where we make a real difference in the lives of kids in our community!
