1 Jan/Feb 2018 Vol 2 Issue 1 Monroe County Friends of Animals Newsletter Published bi-monthly Editor: Keith Sanderson Contact: keith@maxapooch.com In this issue: Thank you friends of MCFA! Monroe County K9 Squad at the shelter. Thrifty shoppers flock to Madisonville Businesses with hearts. The best place to adopt a cat or kitten Bits and Pieces Pick of Pics The Board, Point of View: Thank you concerned friends of MCFA! Thank you for your demonstration of concern for the animals at the Monroe County Animal Shelter during the cold snap in January. Your generous gifts and action are much appreciated. We also appreciate the follow-up so many of you have made in volunteering to help, attending meetings, volunteering and other acts of kindness and compassion for the animals at the shelter. Monroe County Friends of Animals. Monroe County Sheriff Department K9 Squad demonstrates for Monroe County Animal Shelter Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones braves the assault of one his K9 Squad s elite dogs in a demonstration recently held at the Monroe County Animal Shelter Shelter visitors were recently treated to a demonstration of the effectiveness of the Monroe County K9 Squad in tracking and attacking perpetrators of crime. The event gave the Sheriff s department an opportunity to let the public see the K9 Squad, which is a very important part of the Sheriff s Department, and to see the many fine cats and dogs that are available for adoption at the shelter. Spectators were also treated to a demonstration on how these keen-nosed K9 defenders of justice can sniff out drugs. One spectator said, This is really cool, It s like the dogs in the K9 squad are trying to help their less fortunate brothers and sisters in the shelter get adopted.
2 Pawsitive News: Jan/Feb 2018 Page 2 Thrifty shoppers flock to Madisonville! Where the proceeds from every purchase help MCFA help animals!!! The MCFA thrift store in Madisonville is not only a cornucopia of bargains and values. It s where MCFA mascots Smokey and Miss Kitty (better known as Paul and ) The wide range of bargains shoppers find at the MCFA Thrift Store in Madisonville makes it a real find. What makes it an even better find is proceeds help MCFA care for dogs and cats in Monroe County. Merchandise at the store includes quality clothing, jewelry, handbags, boutique items, kitchen gadgets, housewares, appliances, furniture, collectibles, antiques, framed artwork, electronics, books, DVD's, tools, golf equipment, holiday decor, yard & garden items, crafting supplies, pet supplies including pet clothing. All items are clean, tested and at affordable prices. The MCFA Thrift store first opened in February 2012 on Ballplay Road, and relocated to its current Madisonville location in January MCFA volunteers Paul and Tina Wenner manage the store with the help of their team that consists of 15 dedicated volunteers. Overhead is significantly reduced due to the fact the store is managed and run by volunteers. This reduction in overhead means more money for the animals at the Monroe County Animal Shelter The Wenners are dedicated animal lovers. They ve fostered 163 puppies. In addition, they started volunteering with the road blocks by helping to collect donations and eventually took over organizing them in Tina, Paul, the other volunteers at the thrift shop, as well as MCFA volunteers are dedicated to helping animals in as many ways as possible. When you shop at the MCFA thrift shop you help them help animals that might otherwise not have a chance. Tina shown to the right with her husband Paul says, We even take our parrot Emmy to work with us to enhance the customers experience. What better way to let them know the animals appreciate them than to hear one say, Thank you, out loud. The location of the Monroe County Friends of Animals Thrift Store is 884 Englewood St, suites A and B in Madisonville. The story is open Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 am through 4:00 pm. If you have questions or need a pick-up call For more information about MCFA and the MCFA Thrift Store visit the
3 Pawsitive News: Jan/Feb 2018 Page 3 Businesses With Hearts! Please Support Them. A growing number of merchants in the area are helping support Monroe County Friends of Animals. They are placing donation collection boxes similar to the one shown here close to their cash registers. We ask you to put the change you may receive in these boxes. Monroe County Friends of Animals funds nearly 50 percent of the operating cost of the Monroe County Animal Shelter, and every donation helps whether is pennies or dollars. These boxes, many of the designed and constructed by the Tellico Village Woodworkers Club, also help MCFA to make patrons of these businesses aware of the work we do. We support the local merchants listed below, and hop you do also. 4 Pawsitive News: Jan/Feb 2018 Page 4 Five good reasons to adopt a feline from Monroe County Animal Shelter Monroe County Animal Shelter typically has a good selection of felines, ranging from cute and cuddly kittens to adult and senior cats who know how to make humans purr and smile att heir sociable attributes. Best yet, the population of felines is always changing. If you don t see the cat or kitten that steals your heart today, check tomor- Reason number one: A wide selection. The animal shelters or rescues usually have a good selection of cats to adopt, and will usually have a large selection of kittens during the spring through the autumn months. Reason number two: Affordable cost. A cat or kitten from Monroe County Animal Shelter is a bargain. The cost is only $50. Why is this a bargain? The cat is spayed /neutered, has age appropriate vaccinations, has been vetted for disease, is microchipped and registered so if it is very lost it can be easily identified at a shelter or veterinarian s office. Reason number three: Good health. Unlike a retail store no one is going to pressure to make a purchase a sick cat an animal shelter. Cats are vetted when they come to the shelter, and kittens are quarantined from older cats to help prevent them from catching diseases. Reason number four: There is no such thing as a free kitten. Some people think a kitten they get from a friend whose barn cat or house cat has had a litter of kittens is a free kitten. However, if you want to make sure the kitten is healthy and stays healthy you will need to take it to a veterinarian for a checkup, and for vaccinations. In addition, the cat will need to be spayed or neutered when it is old enough. That cost alone will surpass the cost you pay for at Monroe County Animal Shelter or other shelters. Reason number five: Animal shelters are great places to find a mature and friendly cat. Frequently these cats came from homes where their owner died, became ill, or had to give them up for some other reason. Others are house cats who became lost and were turned in. These are sociable, friendly cats waiting for a human to rub against and to purr when to they sit on their laps. While they may not be as playful as kittens, the older felines will steal your heart. Check the website of animals.org.
