(published Volume 2, Issue 1) A leaf, like my leaf, may be one of the most stunning creations of nature, but none are exactly the same. There are so many different qualities this leaf possesses. The different colors make the leaf pop such as the bright lime green in the center and apex. The clear glamorous gold and the exquisite brown mixed in on the blades and rear closest to the stem are what make this leaf unique. The netted veins run throughout the entire star shaped design and help create real jagged edges. The exquisite sounds could only come from a leaf this unique. The crisp crunching of the leaf can brighten up your day. If you made a copy of my leaf on paper, and made both rustle, you could not tell the difference because my leaf sounds so much like paper. A whispering is made when my leaf falls as though it is trying to tell you something. When the leaf lands, a tiny thump is made. The leaves in the world all have different textures and all feel different. Some are hard and some are soft. My leaf is very soft and has a sort of fluffy middle section right where all the green thrives. The silky and bendy feeling all over gives the leaf the ability to change shape and fold without breaking. The stem feels long, thin, and hard, as though it is a never ending piece of stone-hard string. The most attractive and gorgeous creations in nature could easily be leaves, but none can compare to my leaf. Interviewing the Variety Show Auditions By: Lindsay D. Q. How do you think you did? A. 2 Page 2 of 5 Middle School Newspaper Halloween By Elis L. Halloween is coming soon and everyone is getting ready to put on their costume, grab their pumpkin buckets, and go out to trick or treat! Before we can go out and start collecting candy, we need to know some safety rules and helpful tips. If you are planning to stay out all night collecting candy from each house, make sure to wear your most comfortable shoes and bring a jacket just in case it gets too cold. Before you leave your house, you should map out a path so you don t get lost and forget where to go. If you are wearing a costume that is all black, make sure to put something bright on, or bring a flashlight with you so other people can see you. The school s Halloween Dance was on October 24, from 6-8 pm. in the multi-purpose room. There was a costume contet and ten people won! If you are still looking for the perfect Halloween costume and can t decide on one, you could always make one yourself. If you are looking for a costume to match with a group of friends and you can t decide, here are some options you can do: Minions from Despicable Me Trolls Ninja Turtles Care bears Crayons Super heroes Disney Characters Or Your favorite characters from a TV show or movie Did you know that Halloween was originally known as Samhain? It was a Celtic Irish festival marking the last day of summer and beginning of the cold months. The people believed that on October 31, the boundaries of the living and dead overlapped. The people wore masks and costumes to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. That s how the tradition of wearing costumes on Halloween started. Do you know where Eritrea is? Eritrea is a small country in East Africa. It is on the coast of the Red Sea (that wide river between Africa and Asia). Eritrea was part of Italy and then Britain before gaining its independence in Are you afraid of snakes? Eritrea is the home of the most dangerous snake in the world: the black mamba. The black mamba is famous for its super slithering speed of 12 miles per hour! Its bite is extremely poisonous, too! Luckily, the mamba is not found in the United States, so you won t have to worry! I hope that you learned something new today!

3 Page 3 of 5 Middle School Newspaper HYDROGENby Sean E. Hydrogen is a flammable element with an atomic number of 1. It is most commonly found as a gas or as a component of H2O, (water). It was first considered an element in 1766 by Henry Cavendish. Hydrogen is also dangerous, because of its explosive nature. It was once used as a lifting device, until Helium replaced it. Finally, hydrogen is known as H on the Periodic Table of Elements. Restaurant Review The Best Restaurants Around Olando s/diana s Dream Pizza Place and Ice Cream Parlor Olando s pizza is very good. The pizza is always warm and they never make mistakes on your order. Olando s also makes fried cauliflower and these ooey gooey breaded cheese sticks. History s Best Historian Harvey Washington Wiley by Theresa F. You are probably asking, Who is Harvey Washington Wiley? Well, that is why I am going to tell you! Mr. Wiley is well known for creating the nutrition facts on boxes. Even though not many people know who he is, he is still quite popular in the food industry. During immigration in the United States, food sales were through the roof until Mr. Wiley looked into the ingredients and realized food was coated and made with borax and other harmful chemicals to humans. He then called in healthy men to come and do experiments. The food Mr. Wiley served was coated in borax. Purposefully, the men reported swelling in the throat, nausea, and headaches. Finally, he alerted the president, but the president ignored him. Once again he alerted the president and he pushed him away once more. At last, Mr. Wiley told the press! Now that placed a part in history! The press placed an article in the newspaper and then the president and vice-president were alarmed. Finally, in the end nutrition facts were posted on food boxes. Now, because of Mr. Wiley you re still here today. Harvey Washington Wiley Theodore Holtzberg by Theresa F. You are probably asking, Who is Theodore Holtzberg or Ted Hall for short? Ted Hall created the Fat Man. The Fat Man is an atomic bomb which destroyed a whole city in Japan. He was also a spy for the Soviet Union. The Fat Man was used during World War ll, Hall was a prodigy and was only 18 when he created the Fat Man. He was working for the United States, but then tried out for the Russian Soviet Union. Once the United States secrets were spilled, the United States started to investigate. When Hall was 26 years old, he was questioned about what he had done and he denied every question. Finally, at 70 years old, they figured him out.

This man was Christopher Columbus and he had been sailing for thirty-six days. He was sent by the monarchs of Spain, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, to find a trade route to India, with three ships, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, and ninety men. He was the first European to discover the New World, and for that we celebrate him. Since Lyndon B. Johnson declared every second Monday in October a federal holiday in 1968, this holiday has been called Columbus Day. By J.D.L.
