If the Annual Report looks a bit different this year... To reduce printing costs, we have made the 2011 Annual Report more compact than it was in previous years. The primary change is that the full Auditor s Report is no longer contained within the report but is available as a separate document upon request; a brief financial summary with highlights of 2011 is provided. The : Who we are The is a local charity founded in In existence since 1927, we remain an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to providing shelter and care to homeless, injured and abused animals. The employs about 20 people and depends on volunteers for our Board of Directors, various programs and some of our daily operations, including enrichment of the lives of animals during their stay in our care. We are the only animal shelter in Frontenac County. An Ontario SPCA Affiliate As an affiliate of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the supports investigations into allegations of animal cruelty and educates the public on the humane treatment of animals. As an OSPCA affiliate, we ensure that every animal coming into our care receives humane treatment and appropriate medical attention and benefits from best practices in shelter procedures and animal care. Funding Sources The does not receive government or municipal funding for its programs. Sources of revenue and funding that we depend on include: Public and corporate charitable donations Memberships Grants Bequests Fundraising campaigns and events Services provided for a fee The KHS provides care to approximately 3,000 animals in need in a year. In addition to dogs and cats, we have cared for rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, lizards and a wide variety of birds. Some of our more exotic guests in 2011 included a cockatoo, a macaw, a roller pigeon and even a tarantula. The Society provides a long-standing and valuable service to the community as an organization dedicated to honouring, strengthening, and promoting the deep bond between humans and pets, and we are proud to enrich the lives of so many people and animals. Of these, 661 were surrendered by their owners for various reasons, 2,049 were strays, 68 were OSPCA non-compliance/seizure removals, 20 were transferred in from the OSPCA or other shelters, 60 were re-admissions, and three were dogs removed from vehicles. As a not-for-profit organization, we rely on our membership, friends and supporters to fulfill our mission; we receive no government funding or subsidies. With the volatile global economy and our own Canadian economy slowly recovering, the friends of the showed their perpetual generosity. In 2011, 51% of our revenues came from donations and bequests (planned giving) for a total of just over $540,000 ($650,000 in 2010). Of the $540,000 in total donations, $324,000 came from bequests or planned giving; this is our largest single revenue item. It is extremely encouraging to KHS staff and volunteers to see that so many of our supporters and members feel that the has made such a lasting impact on the welfare of animals in this community that they wish to leave a legacy that will continue to support such a good cause. Our goal was to ensure that the donations received from our supporters are guarded against weak markets during times of volatility yet continue to offer positive returns during times of market prosperity. 6 Animal cruelty investigations performed by KHS An important element of the KHS s mission is to investigate reports of cruelty to animals, which we do as a dues-paying affiliate of the Ontario SPCA. The Society receives no funding to provide this service, covering the costs to respond to allegations of animal cruelty through community donations and support. In 2011, the KHS received 412 complaints of cruelty to animals. Of these, 40 were false complaints. Orders issued to owners to obtain veterinary attention for their animals were issued in 57 cases, and 25 search warrants were issued. There were 23 animal removal orders issued to owners, and 68 animals were either removed by or surrendered to the OSPCA and thus came into the care of the KHS. But fate, and the fact that Susan volunteers at the, would have it that a big golden retriever by the name of Fletcher took about three seconds to worm his way into our hearts and home. Fletcher (above) and Zoe (below) Susan phoned me one day from the shelter saying, I m coming home, and not alone. Several months later we lost Suzy to illness. One day, while at the Humane Society, Susan said I miss Suzy. Don t you move. We have just the dog for you, said one of the staff. That morning I got another phone call from Susan at the shelter: I m coming home again, and not alone again. Half an hour later, in walked Zoe the miniature schnauzer, who gave me the look and. KHS in the community: A few highlights from 2011 The KHS was active and visible in the community in 2011, and the Kingston community shone in its support of the Society.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all the KHS members, donors, volunteers, businesses and members of the community who helped homeless animals find a second chance in 2011.

The KHS volunteer Crafters for Critters group raised $800 selling their beautiful cat beds, tents, toys, cards and much more at the event.

A beautiful new-to-us van, essential to our ability to transport animals, was purchased and customized to our needs with donated funds in March.

7 KHS in the community: A few highlights from 2011 The KHS was active and visible in the community in 2011, and the Kingston community shone in its support of the Society. Here is a sampling of some of the highlights of the year. We extend our deepest gratitude to all the KHS members, donors, volunteers, businesses and members of the community who helped homeless animals find a second chance in In February, KHS volunteers entered three of our lovely felines in the Canadian National Cat Show at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. All three came home with beautiful ribbons. The KHS volunteer Crafters for Critters group raised $800 selling their beautiful cat beds, tents, toys, cards and much more at the event. The FurBall concert featuring the band Ambush, held at Zorbas in March and organized by Vicki Shaw and our volunteers, raised over $11,200 for the animals. A beautiful new-to-us van, essential to our ability to transport animals, was purchased and customized to our needs with donated funds in March. The 8 th Annual Bowl for the Animals event was held in early April at Prost Bowling Centre. More than $23,000 was raised, thanks to the bowlers and their sponsors, donors of great silent auction items, and volunteers. A big furry thank-you to the students in the Veterinary Assistant program at St. Lawrence College and their teacher Sandra Candow, who organized and ran the Paws for a Cause fundraiser in April. Their event raised over $3,500 for the KHS spay/neuter program. The Mayor of the City of Kingston proclaimed the month of May 2011 Month to recognize the Society s work and the community s support in assisting animals in need. June brought KHS Shelter Day, an opportunity for the community to visit the shelter and learn more about the Society. The day included the kickoff of an adoption drive, an open house with tours, a BBQ, bake sale, flea market, sponsor booths and more. The shelter s parking lot and driveway were resurfaced later in the year. The 13 th Annual Big Paws at the Point pledge walk was held at Lemoine Point Conservation Area in September. Thanks to the generosity of the community who came out for the walk, dog-related demos and displays and silent and live auctions on that beautiful sunny day, over $30,000 was raised. In November, the Kingston Road Runners Association held its 10K Anniversary Run, with funds raised from the event going to the KHS. The fun and furry fundraising Pucks for Paws event, in collaboration with the dog-friendly Kingston Frontenacs, was held at the K-Rock Centre in November. Fronts fans got to enjoy the game with their dogs, adoptable KHS canines got to meet prospective adopters, and a special tennis-ball fetch raffle scored the lucky winner a great prize. PetSmart hosted pet photos with Santa Claws in December, with proceeds going to the KHS. And last but not least, the KHS received Honourable Mention from Kingston City Council for our entry in the Downtown Kingston 2011 Nighttime Santa Claus Parade!
