the mission of the spca of texas is to provide every animal with exceptional care and a loving home.

The SPCA of Texas is the leading animal welfare agency in North Texas, and has been serving the animals and people of our community for 72 years. In January 2010, we launched the final phase of our $15 million campaign to construct a new full-service animal care facility and shelter to replace our small, 40-year-old shelter near downtown Dallas. The new center will include a spacious shelter for abused, neglected and homeless animals, a state-of-the-art veterinary wing, outdoor play areas and training/educational classrooms. The Rees-Jones Foundation kicked off this phase in style and will double all new pledges to the capital campaign ($2 dollars for every $1 dollar pledged, up to a total of $4 million), provided we raise at least $2 million by September 30th. Their generous support will allow us to begin construction this year, and that s something to bark about! Largest animal welfare agency in North Texas. The only organization with comprehensive care: Adoptions Low-cost veterinary clinics for the community Rescue and investigations team Community outreach programs We do not euthanize for lack of space and we do not have time limits. $8 million annual operating budget funded through private donations and fees for service we do not receive general operating support from ASPCA, Humane Society or government sources employees, 4 locations, 600+ volunteers and a network of foster families serve more than 66,500 animals annually SPCA

adoptions We find new homes for an average of 27 pets each and every day! In addition to our adoption centers, which are located in downtown Dallas and McKinney, we have a wildly successful cat adoption program with local PetSmart stores. We also team up with NorthPark Center and Galleria Mall for our winter and spring adoption events, and you ll find our mobile adoption units at events throughout the Metroplex. Animals in our care come from three primary places: Owner Surrender Owners who no longer can or want to care for their pets may surrender them through our Reservation Required system. Court Ordered Judges throughout the state award the SPCA of Texas custody of animals whose owners have been found guilty of abuse or neglect. Transfers City shelters are forced to euthanize at an alarming rate, and we transfer as many animals into our program as possible. Before the SPCA of Texas makes animals available for adoption, the pets must pass our rigorous standards for behavior and overall health, and they must be vaccinated, spayed or neutered.

mat mcbriar, the punter for the dallas cowboys, and his wife, erin, will always be stars in our book! they have adopted three dogs, including sydney from the spca of texas, and they help host one of our most successful private fundraisers poker for pets in conjunction with the dallas cowboys women s association. 7 low-cost veterinary clinics The SPCA operates low-cost veterinary clinics, which are open to the public, in South Oak Cliff and McKinney. Our full-time veterinarians perform a complete array of pet care services, which might otherwise be out of reach for some families in our community. Our new facility s clinic will be twice the size of our existing clinics and will provide low-cost pet check-ups, treatments and spay/neuter surgeries, in addition to supporting the medical needs of the animals in the SPCA s care.

rescue and investigations team The SPCA of Texas receives thousands of calls each year from concerned citizens reporting animal abuse and neglect. Our team works with pet owners to help them understand and comply with animal welfare laws, and we partner with local law enforcement agencies to rescue thousands of animals each year from puppy mills, dog fighting rings and some of the most inhumane conditions you can imagine. Our new facility will include dedicated space for our Rescue and Investigations Team, including a large veterinary clinic for treating and healing these animals. 26,411 animals find refuge at the spca of texas On December 9, 2009, the SPCA of Texas was notified that city officials with Animal Services of Arlington, Texas were days away from serving a civil seizure warrant on U.S. Global Exotics, a multi-million dollar importer and distributor of exotic animals. The business owners were accused of mistreating and cruelly confining thousands of animals, many of them left starving in shipping boxes or packed with fungus-covered carcasses. The Arlington officials asked the SPCA of Texas and the Humane Society of North Texas to partner with them to help transport and house the animals. Our agency had the only facility large enough to care for the extraordinary number of creatures; however, that facility is the empty half of our headquarters building, which is under renovation. To be made suitable for the animals, our 18,000-square-foot space needed electricity, heat, secure caging, work tables and equipment for medical procedures and food preparation, as well as special lamps and habitats for reptiles and aquatic creatures. From the time our agency agreed to house the rescued animals, we had just four days to ready the space! On December 15, 2009, our staff worked in coordination with Arlington Animal Services and HSNT to seize the animals and transport them to the SPCA headquarters. The operation took 14 hours and recovered 26,411 animals, including snakes, turtles, iguanas, hedgehogs, chinchillas, ferrets, tortoises, lizards, skinks, frogs and tarantulas, as well as a number of larger mammals, such as sloths, lemurs, coatimundi, kinkajous and wallabies. For two months, our veterinarians and staff worked with specialists from around the world to care for these animals until they could be placed with reputable zoos, sanctuaries and rescue organizations to ensure they would not end up back in the pet trade.

community outreach In addition to assisting the animals in our community, the new center will benefit its people. The SPCA of Texas will expand its educational outreach programs, which currently serve 21,000 North Texans. Humane Education Programs Our trained volunteers and professional educators spend time in schools and camps to teach young children about humane animal care. Through programs such as The 10 Acts of Kindness, How to be Bite Free and Critter Camps, children learn kindness and responsibility lessons that reach far beyond the classroom. Pet Grief Support Group Pets are family members, and their loss can be devastating. The SPCA of Texas hosts an innovative support group led by a licensed counselor, which is offered free of charge to grieving pet owners. Compassion Connection The SPCA s trained volunteers and therapy-certified dogs and cats visit local hospitals, retirement homes and rehabilitation centers, providing comfort and lifting spirits.

Best of all, we ll be able to unite more pets with loving families. $2 million must be raised by September 30 to trigger Rees-Jones pledge and start construction $2 million after 9/30/10 $2 million needed by 9/30/10 $4 million Rees-Jones matching pledge $7 million in the bank
