6 The long-billed curlew is North America s largest shorebird. The bird can grow up to two feet long, and the bill, which is longer on females, may be eight inches long. The curlew is mo led brown with cinnamon-colored wings. The name curlew comes from the bird s ringing call of cur-lee. The curlew uses its long downward-curved bill to dig on the shore for crabs and clams, and in grasslands to peck for worms and insects. As courtship behavior, males perform showy dances and flying pa erns. The female will lay one brood of four buff-colored eggs. Both parents take care of the nest and defend the young, but the mother leaves her chicks a er two or three weeks, leaving the male to care for the brood. Curlews o en return to the same mate year a er year. Smokey the Bear The living symbol of Smokey Bear was a frightened and singed cub found in a tree a er a 1950 forest fire in New Mexico. DID YOU KNOW? Peter Sellers was the first male to appear on the cover of Playboy, in April He was pictured with actress Karen Lynn. Pure gold is non-toxic and is some mes used as a food decora on.
7 Dove September 1 4 Your happy-go-lucky approach keeps you centered, no ma er what life throws your way. Even when mes get tough, you are upbeat and spread cheer wherever you go. While you are generally the leader of your group of friends, you are a very good listener and are known to give good advice. September Cat You are very easy to get along with, and friends enjoy your company. You have an inquisi ve personality, and you are always looking for the next place to explore or a new ac vity to try. Though you enjoy being around other people, some mes you just need some quiet me. Dog September Your loyalty knows no bounds. Others know they can always count on you to help them out. Your down-to earth personality makes you very likeable, and you make new friends wherever you go. Those around you value your honesty September Zodiacs Virgo (The Virgin) September 1 22 Libra (The Scales) September What s Lucky in September? 8 Birthstone Sapphire The cool blue sapphire is made of corundum, and when it is red, it is called a ruby. The most expensive sapphires are mined in Kashmir and Myanmar, but they are also found in Australia, Africa, and India. Sapphires are very hard and durable. Perhaps that is why they are associated with truth and fidelity. In ancient mes, it was believed that if the wearer was unfaithful, the stone would not shine. Sapphires were reputed to have healing powers that helped with eye and ear problems, bleeding, and inflamma on. Flower Aster The aster is named for its star-shaped flower. Also known as the Michaelmas daisy, it blooms in the fall with blue, pink, and white blossoms. Some folklore says that burning aster leaves will keep snakes away. The aster symbolizes valor, and it is some mes seen at the burial of soldiers. A 1918 Hungarian revolt is known as the Aster Revolu on because protesters wore the flower when they a acked government buildings in Budapest. In Victorian mes, the aster meant Take care of yourself for me. September, now the ninth month, was named for sep mus, meaning seven, its original place in the Roman calendar. (January and February were added in 46 BC.) September was called harvest month in Charlemagne s calendar. Anglo-Saxons called the month Gerstmonath, or barley month, for the crop that was usually harvested then.
