3 AFRICAN ELEPHANT African Elephants live in parts of central, eastern, and southern Africa in grasslands and open woodlands. They eat grass, leaves, and bark of bushes and tress. Male African Elephants can reach 13 feet tall and weigh up to 13,000 pounds. Females are much smaller. Elephants keep growing throughout their lifetime. 3

4 TIGER Tigers live in the tropical rain forests of small areas in Asia. They can also live in snowcovered forests of northern Asia. Tiger s diets mainly consist of pigs and deer. Male tigers can grow 8 to 10 feet long. Like fingerprints, every tiger has a unique pattern of stripes that can be used to identify it. 4

BROWN BEAR Brown Bears live in the forests, open fields, and mountain highlands of Northwestern North America, Northern Asia, Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East.

They eat roots, berries, insects, mammals, and fish. A full grown brown bear can grow to be 6 to 9 ½ feet long and 3-4 feel tall at the shoulder. Male brown bears are called boars, and females are called sows. 5

7 BALD EAGLE Bald Eagles live along coastlines, lakes, and rivers of Canada, the United States, and Northwest Mexico. They eat fish, rabbits, and squirrels. Fullgrown, they are about inches long. The Bald Eagle, isn t really bald. Its head is covered with short, white feathers. 7

8 GREAT HORNED OWL Great Horned Owls live from the Arctic to South America in mountains, grasslands and deserts. These owls mainly eat rabbits, mice, and squirrels. Full grown, Great Horned Owls can be inches long and have a wingspan of inches. The Great Horned Owl is also known as the Tiger Owl or Cat Owl. 8

9 PEACOCK Peacocks live wildly in the forests and rain forests of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. Southeast Asia, and Central Africa. They eat mainly grains, insects, and small reptiles. Full grown, they can be inches long, depending on the species. The long tail of an adult males is called a train and can reach 6 feet long. 9

11 BLUE POISON FROG Blue Poison Frogs live in Central and South America in the rain forest. They eat ants, termites, centipedes, and beetles. They are about 1 inch long full grown. A group of frogs is called an army. 11

12 WAXY TREE FROG Waxy Tree Frogs are found in Central and South America around trees and near ponds. They eat insects, and can grow to be 3 inches. Waxy Tree Frogs make a leaf nest to lay their eggs. 12

13 FIRE SALAMANDER Fire Salamanders live in Europe, Africa, and Asia in forests. They eat insects, worms, small frogs, and spiders. They can grow up to 8 inches long. The Fire Salamander is the only amphibian that does not hatch from an egg. Babies instead, develop inside the mother s body. 13

15 GALAPAGOS TORTOISE Galapagos Tortoises live on the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador in flat, grassy areas. These tortoises mainly eat cactus, fruit, flowers, leaves, and grasses. Full grown Galapagos Tortoises are up to 6 feet long and 4-5 feel across. These tortoises can live a very long time! Some of the ones that live in zoos are more than 100 years old! 15

16 AMERICAN ALLIGATOR American alligators live in the swamps and marshes of the Southeastern United States. They eat mainly fish, turtles, and birds found in and around water sources. They can grow up to 15 feet long! The longest alligator on record was 15 feet, 9 inches long and weighed 1,011 pounds! 16

17 PYTHON Pythons live in rain forests, grasslands, and swamps in Africa, Madagascar, Southeast Asia, and Australia. These snakes eat rodents, birds, lizards, and even larger animals like pigs depending on the size of the snake. Pythons can be anywhere from 23 inches to 33 feet long, depending on species! 17

19 LADYBUG Ladybugs live in North, Central, and South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia in forests, meadows, and gardens. Ladybugs eat fruit flies, and other small insects. They are about the size of a child s pinky fingernail. When ladybugs fly, they beat their wings about 85 times per second. 19

20 SCORPION Scorpions live on every continent except Antarctica in forests, grasslands, and deserts. They eat insects, spiders, and sometimes small mice and lizards. They can grow to be ¼ inch to about 8 inches long. A Scorpion has 2 eyes on top and up to 5 pairs on each side of its head. 20

21 BUTTERFLY Butterflies live in all continents except Antarctica and can live in all kinds of habitats. They go through metamorphosis, which is where their bodies change as they grow. Butterflies start out their lives as caterpillars. Caterpillars shed their skins as they grow, and form a chrysalis. From the chrysalis, a butterfly emerges. 21
