DO NOW: Invertebrate POP Quiz Question 1: What is an example of an echinoderm?
Question 2 What does it mean to be an invertebrate?
Question 3 Having a soft body and often having a hard shell is an example of which of the following classes Echinoderm Mollusk Arthropod Annelid
Question 4 A hermit crab is an example of an organism from which class?
Question 5 What is bilateral symmetry?
Question 6 Which organism has radial symmetry? Dog Sea Urchin Lobster Beetle
Question 7 An exterior system that supports the body and protects organs is called?
Question 8 All insects, arachnid, and crustaceans are included in which class (echinoderms, mollusk, arthropods or annelids.)
Question 9 What class has a jointed legs and an exoskeleton?
Question 10 Which class of organisms are classified as invertebrate animals? Echinoderms Arthropods Annelids Mollusks
Do Now Describe the difference between and ectothermic and endothermic animal. Give 2 examples of each adapted from jswilley/htdocs/classification%20of %20Animals.ppt
***Please take out your notebooks and a separate sheet of paper. Please sit quietly so I ll know you are ready to begin. Vertebrates Susan B. Anthony Middle School 7 th Grade Life Science Mr. Pezzuto May 11 th 2012 adapted from jswilley/htdocs/classification%20of %20Animals.ppt
Learning Goals Describe what it means to be a vertebrate Explain the difference between an endotherm and an ectotherm State specific characteristics about members of each group of vertebrates adapted from jswilley/htdocs/classification%20of %20Animals.ppt
Scientific Taxonomy Is the science of identifying and naming species, and arranging them into a classification. We use groups called taxa to organize organisms based on similar characteristics. adapted from jswilley/htdocs/classification%20of %20Animals.ppt
Scientific Taxa Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species Kings Play Chess On Fine Grain Sand As you move down the list, the categories become more and more specific. Ex. Kingdoms: Plant, Animal, Protist etc Species:Southern Leopard Frog, Honey Mushroom, or White Oak adapted from jswilley/htdocs/classification%20of %20Animals.ppt
Humans Are Vertebrates!
Animals With Backbones- Chordates (Phylum Chordata) AMPHIBIAN FISH MAMMAL BIRD REPTILE
Animals With Backbones Vertebrates- have a backbone. phylum chordata. Vertebrates include many different kinds of animals and are found just about everywhere in oceans, rivers, forests, mountains, and deserts. Only 5% of the kinds of animals on earth are chordates.
Fish
Fish Characteristics Largest group of vertebrates. Many fish are covered with scales that protects them. Have fins for steering and balance in the water. They breathe through gills. Ectotherm- means outside temperature. Means Cold blooded, their body temp is regulated by the temp of the water.
Amphibians
Amphibian Characteristics Their body temperature varies with their surroundings. Ectotherm- means cold blooded. Amphibians hatch from eggs and they can live on land as an adult. Young amphibians breathe through gills like fish. Adult amphibians breathe air from lungs.
Amphibian Characteristics This process of change from baby to adult is called a metamorphosis. Some have smooth moist skin. Examples- Frog, toad, newt, salamander. adapted from jswilley/htdocs/classification%20of %20Animals.ppt
Reptiles
Reptile Characteristics They lay eggs on land and undergo no metamorphosis. They have dry scaly skin. They can include animals as large as a crocodile and as small as a gecko. Ectothermic. They live in hot, dry deserts and in warm, wet tropical rain forests. Examples- turtles, snakes, iguanas, lizards.
Birds
Bird Characteristics Have wings, beaks, 2 legs and feathers. Only birds have feathers. Endotherms- inside temp body regulates temperature. There are about 9,000 types of birds. The bird s skeleton is very light in weight. Bones are hollow! This helps them to fly. Examples- flamingo, eagle, sparrow, crow, owl, hawk.
Mammals
Mammal Characteristics Humans are mammals. Their young grows inside the mother give birth to live young They feed milk to their young. Hair is an adaptation that keeps mammals warm. They are endotherms- maintain a constant body temperature. -ape, lions, kangaroos, bats, and your mom.
Ticket to Leave On a sheet of lined paper, Write down the difference between a endotherm and an ectotherm. Similarities and difference between anphibians and reptiles. Also, write the names of the scientific taxonomic levels in order. (remember Kings play chess ) adapted from jswilley/htdocs/classification%20of %20Animals.ppt
