2 It's no secret that raising beef, pork and chicken as grass -fed, hormone -and antibiotic-free adds time and often more work to the growirlg process, part of this is what makes up our costs, as time is money. We work hard to keep (SA SPRING 2014 our prices as reasonable as possible. Community Supported Everyone seems to have their favorite cuts, some like what we call the prime cuts which are ones that need little to no prep work including the porter house, rib eye, tenderloin and T-bone. Others like the bigger cuts like the 7-bone chuck roast, rump roast and eye round roast; these cuts are larger so you can get more than one meal out of them and are cooked for a long time. There are many benefits to buying local -- you know where your food is raised and in what type of environment, and processing is local so there's no prolonged transport time, reducing your carbon footprint and eliminating the need for preservatives. You also help support your local farmer and community, but most of all it's better for you and your family because you avoid meats with chemical, modified growth hormones or antibiotics. Grass-fed will usually requires 30% less cooking time because it is leaner and richer in healthy omega-3 fats, which melt quicker at a lower temperature than omega-6 fats in conventional meat. 3 ISaddle Up! I I Farnham Farm Updatel Starting this spring we will be offering horse-back riding We were very excited to get the opportunity lessons and pony rides! Riding and working with horses has Farm as finding local pastures, hay and feed for our animals is a to work with Farnham always been like therapy for me and I am so happy to share priority of ours. This year pasturing our livestock at the farm was a this experience with others. In addition to riding, lessons great success, we were able to graze our yearling beef steers down include learning to groom, handle and care for our ponies. Pony rides and pony theme birthday parties can also be arranged! at the Farnham Farm for much of the summer months. We also brought our goats to the farm as well to help with weed control. In addition to grazing the already fenced field out front we were able to put up a temporary fence on the old hay field so we could use that land for grazing as well. Sandal has taught countless children to ride, I myself learned to ride on Sandal when I was a little girl! Sandal is a little lady and is perfect for our youngest riders. Although she is getting older she still loves the attention she gets from working with kids. Another of our goals at the Farnham Farm was to start cutting some hay which we could use to feed our animals during winter months when grazing is not possible. This was our first year making hay and it was a great learning experience for us! Despite some mechanical issues we were able to get a very small first cutting of about 10 bales, which was a huge hit with our goats! We are excited to continue this partnership with the Farnham Farm next year. Over the winter we plan on doing some equipment repairs so we will be up and ready for haying in the spring. Our newest pony, Panther, comes to us from New Hampshire where he was part of a summer camp and therapeutic riding program. Panther is full of energy and loves adventures. He is a stocky little pony great for kids of all ages and even small adults Show your support for local producers this year by buying your holiday gifts from Rossi Farm! 4 New Additions to the Rossi Farm Family... IPantherl This fierce little Panther is nothing to be afraid of! He just arrived at our farm this November. He seems right at home here on the Island, he loves carrots and attention so he can't wait to start spending time with some kids in the spring iram Rodi Sheep are new to us here at Rossi Farm! Lamb Ram Rod was part of a set of triplets born at a farm off island. His mom was struggling to care for all 3 lambs so this little guy needed a home and frequent bottle feeding! We hope to get him a girlfriend in the spring and look forward to having lambs in the future! Arthur or Uncle Arthur as we like to call him, came to us this fall after the passing of our buck George. Although no one could ever replace George, we had to bring in Uncle Arthur to get the goats bred so we can have kids and milk in the spring. So far Arthur has been friendly and easy to work with, and we are looking forward to getting to know him better. Minno\l\l Born this summer to our cow Cinnamon. Sugar has just as much personality as her mother and we hope Sugar will be a part of our herd for a long time to come! Look for her this spring down at the Farnham Farm. Also born this summer to one of our Gilligan's Island girls, Ginger. We struggled for a long time to come up with a fitting name for this girl but finally settled on Minnow, after the boat from Gilligans Island.
