Activities as a centre of research, expertise, standardisation and dissemination of techniques within the remit of the mandate given by the OIE Disease control Provision of diagnostic services and scientific advice to CFIA Policies and Programs, and Operations, Branches Domestic disease investigations of Taenia saginata/cysticercus bovis infections in cattle, and human cyclosporosis and giardiosis infections Epidemiology, surveillance, risk assessment, modelling Surveillance for food-borne parasites in animals, animal products and fresh produce for domestic food safety, disease control, and import/export purposes National surveillance program for detection of Trichinella in domestic swine via digestion assay; Research survey for detection of Trichinella spp. in omnivorous and carnivorous wildlife in proximity to domestic swine in Canada via digestion assay; National surveillance program for detection of Cyclospora, Cryptosporidium, Toxoplasma, and Giardia contamination of fresh domestic and imported produce via qpcr-mca and npcr; Research survey for detection of Toxoplasma in domestic swine via meat juice serology Participation on CFIA assessment team evaluating foreign country food safety controls for food-borne parasite contamination of exported produce On-site provision of scientific advice to CFIA assessment team evaluating foreign country food safety controls to mitigate Cyclospora contamination of fresh fruit and vegetables for export Training, capacity building Training and certification of CFIA and industry analysts to perform diagnostic assays for the detection of food-borne parasites Zoonotic food-borne parasites from domestic and imported food sources Ad hoc training to graduate students performing research studies involving food-borne zoonotic parasites Trichinella spp. and Toxoplasma Internal capacity building to develop expertise in whole genome/next generation sequencing This initiative is currently focussed on Toxoplasma Diagnosis, biotechnology and laboratory Routine diagnosis and surveillance of food-borne parasites for domestic disease control, food safety, and import/export purposes Detection and diagnosis of various food-borne parasites by direct (microscopic examination, digestion assay, PCR) and indirect (serological) methods, including zoonotic coccidia, Giardia, Taenia, and Trichinella 2 OIE Collaborating Centres Reports Activities, 2016

3 Development, optimization, standardization, and/or validation of methods to detect food-borne zoonotic parasites Optimization of an in-house indirect ELISA to detect Trichinella in domestic swine; Development of a celisa to detect Trichinella in domestic swine and other host species; Development and/or validation of in-house and commercial serological methods (IFA, MAT, ELISA) to detect Toxoplasma in meat juice samples from domestic food animals and wildlife; Assessment of a commercial digestion assay kit for the detection of Trichinella in pigs, horses, and wildlife; Optimization of LAMP assays for the detection of Toxoplasma and Giardia contamination of fresh produce ToR : To propose or develop methods and procedures that facilitate harmonisation of international standards and guidelines applicable to the designated specialty 2.
