Our members are veterinarians who use or have an interest in complementary or alternative veterinary medicine (CAVM) and surgery. IVA provides registered veterinarians and veterinary students with support and professional development so that they can pursue careers in integrative veterinary medicine and surgery, and provide the public with the best advice and practice of CAVM available. About the conference This weekend conference is an introduction and further studies in Integrative medicine and utilisation of these into everyday veterinary practice. It will cover therapies from Chinese herbal preparations, conventional herbal medicines, supplements and probiotics, breathing exercises, and homemade diets and the integration of these into small animal medicine, surgery and wildlife. 4 Integrative Veterinary Medicine Conference Integrative Medicine in Veterinary Practice Sydney, September 2013 Speakers Dr Saranyu Pearson Dr Saranyu Pearson (BVSc Melb 1987) is a veterinary practitioner in private small animal practice in Geelong, Victoria. She has been particularly interested in integrative medicine for ten years and in between a busy private practice conducts workshops and seminars for the public regarding integrative approaches to animal health. Dr Pearson studies with HPTG and is an LFHom(Vet). She also uses a range of physical therapies in her practice. As President of Integrative Veterinarians Australia (AVA sig), Dr Pearson recognizes the need to incorporate the principles of integrative veterinary medicine into current veterinary education so that veterinarians have access to a deeper understanding of disease aetiology and medical philosophy. Chamy Leung Chamy Leung graduated from University of Technology, Sydney in 1999 with Bachelor of Health Science (Acu) and 2002 Master of Health Science TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). She has completed an Advance Certificate of Acupuncture and TCM (China, Guang Zhou & Hang Zhou) with 3 months internship. Chamy is a member of AACMA (Australia Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association) and a Registered Acupuncturist, Traditional Chinese Herbalist and Herbal Dispensing. She has been practising TCM for 14 years and currently working for Health World Limited as TCM Area Sales Manager. Dr Barbara Fougere Barbara Fougere is an integrative practitioner and educator and uses both Chinese and Western herbs, acupuncture and other therapies in her practice in Sydney. She holds a Masters degree in herbal Medicine and has developed two accredited Graduate Diplomas in Western veterinary Herbal Medicine and Chinese Herbal Medicine through the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies. She is past President of the Veterinary Botanical Medicine Association and still on the board and a Full member of the National Herbalists Association Australia. She is a co-author of Veterinary Herbal Medicine, the first textbook on the subject. She cultivates mushrooms for medicine and health as well as medicinal herbs and delights in permaculture. Dr Elaine Cebuliak Dr Elaine Cebuliak MANZCVSc (dentistry), IVAS CVA, Vet Acupuncture Dip, Remedial Massage/Reflexology, AIAS, Cert Shiatsu, Tui Na, aromatherapy, Chinese HerbMedicine, Cathay Herbal Cert Western Herbal medicine, Adv Dip Naturopathy. Performs referral work, teaching, running workshops, webinars, and training under the business name Animal Wellness. Animal Wellness teaches animal massage workshops regularly, and also have client, vet student, and vet nurse training for dentistry and holistic/integrative therapies. The Animal Wellness clinic incorporates Advanced Dentistry and Integrative Vet Medicine in Greenslopes, Brisbane, Queensland. Elaine enjoys teaching in developing Countries and has many Facebook friends that she has REALLY met while traveling the world! Chatting to them keeps her up late at night, however...
5 Speakers (continue) Dr Megan Kearney Megan Kearney opened Vitality Vetcare in November This was the manifestation of a long-held dream to open an integrative veterinary hospital where animals would receive compassionate holistic veterinary care in a relaxed and welcoming environment. She graduated from the University of Queensland in She worked in mixed practices in Alice Springs and Cootamundra until moving to the UK in She worked in equine, mixed, small animal and holistic practices in England and Wales until she started a holistic veterinary referral service and an herbal practice for people in Yorkshire in She studied at the College of Phytotherapy, East Sussex and gained her Diploma of Herbal Medicine in 1998 becoming the first veterinarian Member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists in Megan studied at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital and the Homeopathic Professionals Teaching Group, Oxford and has MFHom (vet) She completed the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society course in Megan is now a Member of the National Herbalists Association of Australia, currently studying behavioural medicine, and actively involved in the British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons and the Integrative Veterinarians Australia. Dr Edward Bassingthwaighte Dr Edward Bassingthwaighte BVSc (Hon II) graduated from UQ in In 1998 he contracted Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and was an invalid for 3 years. As part of his long journey of healing, he has studied and practiced energy healing in depth, and uses it to help every pet he sees. Dr Edward owns a home visit holistic practice (The Healing Vet), lives in Uki with his lovely wife, and is a singer songwriter. Dr Caroline Ash Caroline Ash BVSc (Syd) After dabbling in commercial poultry and companion animal practice, Caroline spent most of her working life up to 2011 employed by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service as an on-plant veterinary officer, stationed at export abattoirs, mainly in Tasmania and mainly processing cattle. After doing a Buteyko breathing retraining program she was able to quickly reverse a diagnosis of severe sleep apnoea, and to withdraw from using a ventilator during sleep. In 2011, she studied with the Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health, and is now an accredited teacher of breathing re- training. Her clients these days are human, but she has an interest in the potential veterinary applications for recognising and managing conditions associated with disordered breathing, both for vets and their patients. Dr Kate Millhouse Dr Kate Millhouse (BVMS Murdoch 1998) has worked in both mixed and small animal veterinary practices. She has completed International Veterinary Acupuncture Certificate (2005), Chinese Veterinary Herbal Medicine Certificate (2008), and 3 years study with HPTG, LFHom(vet) (2003). She has interest in all aspects of integrative therapies particularly natural diets and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and utilises these in her practice Holistic Paws in Canberra ACT.
