2 SPEAKER S BIOS Bullet Brown Bullet began her career with pets at the age of 15 when she accepted a part-time job at a veterinary clinic. She spent almost 20 years in the veterinary field as a technician before accepting an apprenticeship at a local grooming shop. At the end of her two-year apprenticeship, she opened her own business, focusing more on quality than quantity. Despite being located in a small Southern town, she has established a highly reputable, professional business. Bullet s business, A.B. Grooming Services, was featured in the PAWsitively Posh article from Groomer to Groomer s Nov/Dec 2009 issue. Bullet has competed and placed in both breed profile as well as creative competitions, even taking the coveted title of Best Creative Groomer in In addition to running her salon, Bullet speaks and judges internationally and serves as president of the National Association of Professional Creative Groomers, the first and only organization dedicated to both the art and science of creative grooming. In 2011, Bullet was the first professional dog groomer to speak at Pet Vet Russia (formerly Zoo Russia) in Moscow as well as The DogBrands Fashion show in Kiev, Ukraine in She also writes and edits for CGQ: Creative Groomer Quarterly, is author of both The Science of Creative Grooming and Creative Grooming 101, writes freelance grooming and pet related articles for other publications, and established the first ever creative grooming certification program. Through the NAPCG Bullet continues to produce educational and marketing materials for established and aspiring creative groomers around the world. Michele Grenkow Ever know that girl who sits in the corner with a cat in her lap and a dog at her side while off in her own world drawing? That's Michele. Whether it is in the salon, at a dog show, or in her home, that is the position in which you usually find her. Michele was given the world famous Animal Haven Grooming Salon in 2004 after managing it for several years; to respect it, she finished her CMG status within a year and carried on its winning ways. Michele is also a well-known breeder of Great Danes, a sweeps judge, a handler and a teacher with a history as a veterinary technician and farrier as well as a medical first responder. The creative world opened up to Michele after she was asked to colour match a cat for a TV series, and the rest (as they say) is history. Dr. Altina Wickstrom DVM, CCRT, CVMA Dr. Altina Wickstrom began her career in veterinary medicine in 1973 as a licensed Veterinary Technician in the State of Washington, USA, she returned to school and in 1988 and received her DVM degree from Washington State University. From 1988 to 1995, Dr. Wickstrom worked in several small animal practices in the central and western US, served as the director of a small animal emergency clinic near Chicago, worked as a research associate testing new AIDS drugs, and a poison information specialist for the National Animal Poison Control Center at the University of Illinois. In 1996 she founded the Palmer Lake Veterinary Clinic outside Colorado Springs, Colorado. Dr. Wickstrom moved with her family to New Zealand in 1997 where she started the Rolleston Veterinary Clinic south of Christchurch. Although a general practice, nearly half of the work involved canine and feline reproduction. While there she was trained in a form of alternative medicine known as Neurolink. She was the first veterinarian, and remains one of a handful worldwide to adopt this treatment modality for use in small animals. In addition to her advanced training in canine reproduction, Dr. Wickstrom has received advanced training in CO2 laser surgical techniques and single port laproscopy and endoscopy, and is credentialed in regenerative medicine stem cell therapy, the Penn Hip technique for evaluation of hip dysplasia as well as Veterinary Acupuncture for small animals and exotics. She has obtained her certification in Canine Rehabilitation, one of only four veterinarians in Saskatchewan with this qualification, and continues to pursue additional training in this field. Dr. Wickstrom currently practises Veterinary medicine in Saskatoon since 1999 and is the current owner of the Acadia Veterinary Clinic 2003.

With no standards for their grooms, thinking outside the box can be very helpful. Michele will show you tips and tricks for getting a balanced look to please any mixed breed pet owner. Health & First Aid: Michele Grenkow Accidents do happen, but how the professional groomer is trained and reacts makes all the difference. In addition you will learn basic parasites and how to stop them from spreading in your salon. Canine Behaviour & Handling- Intro: Bullet Brown The most common injury in the professional salon is a bite. Many times, groomers feel they had no warning, but knowing how dogs communicate is paramount for anyone who works with canines. Understanding how to read canine body language makes your job easier and less stress for the pet. Sanitation in the Salon: Bullet Brown With so many cats, dogs and even humans coming through the door, it is paramount that the professional salon be clean and well sanitized to protect the safety and health of our clients. In this seminar Bullet will help you to determine whether or not you are properly sanitizing your salon to prevent bacterial and fungal infections and/or cross contamination of the pets you groom, as well as protect yourself and your employees from zoonotic diseases. CPPS Question Period: CPPS Rep Not sure where to begin with your certification or what is required for a dog and technique? We will go over how the exams work and what condition your dogs need to be in for certification. This lecture includes open question period.
5 Sunday Canine Anatomy Part 1 & 2: Michele Grenkow Understanding canine anatomy makes a professional groomer s job easier while ensuring the pet is not inadvertently injured during the grooming process. Canine joints and muscles do not function the same as human joints, therefore they cannot be manipulated in the same fashion. This class is in depth including movement so to better understand how you can safely work with pets from a young age to the arthritic senior. PCA, Stop the Shaving: Bullet Brown To shave or not... that is the question when it comes to fur bearing and/or double coated breeds. What is post clipping alopecia? Why does it occur? Can it be reversed? Get answers to these questions and more as Bullet explains how to communicate concerns with clients and protect yourself from legal ramifications. Science of Creative Grooming; Products to Avoid: Bullet Brown Ever wonder if the products you use are safe? You will walk away with the knowledge of what to avoid and why. Creative Accessories, Where to Begin: Bullet Brown This is a fun class, learn how to create simple inexpensive accessories that will make any customer thrilled. Monday Skin and Coat Esthetics: Bullet Brown The professional groomer's knowledge should be about much more than cutting or clipping hair. Skin and coat esthetics is a must for the new age salon. Learn the anatomy of canine/feline skin and coat, the most common product ingredients and why they are needed, how products interact with skin and coat. Understanding Breed Standards: Michele Grenkow & Shandra Oosterlaken Ever read a breed standard or description and wonder What does that mean? Michele and Shandra will explain what common terms refer to and how they apply to the dogs we groom every day. Yeast and Nutrition: Dr Altina Wickstrom, DVM Do you see a lot of yeasty dogs? This is the class for you. Dr Wickstrom will explain the importance of nutrition and how it can affect a dog with yeast. Grooming Producst, Where to Begin: Michele Grenkow & Shandra Oosterlaken Ever wonder how they get those poodle top knots up or how to apply chalk for competition on a terrier?
