My name is Melissa Matiatos and am this year s President. am really excited for this year to begin! hrough the Pre-et Club not only will you be able to explore your future career, but you will also be able to make connections with other Pre-et tudents who are taking classes similar to yours! Not only have met some of my best friends through the Pre-et Club, but have also been able to form study groups for most of my classes. his year will be the fourth year have been involved in this club and have enjoyed every minute of it. When first came to CU was interested in small animal medicine and small animal medicine only, but after hearing r. Holt, a large animal veterinarian, speak, realized that there were many different directions could go. hrough the Pre-et Club found have an interest in large animal medicine especially involving dairy cows. As the President this year would like to help members find their passions and niche in the veterinary world. here is an exciting year ahead of us and would like to welcome all of our new members to the club and to Colorado tate University. am looking forward to meeting everyone! 6 What our president has to say about getting involved with the CU Pre-et Club: G he Pre-et Club is a great way to explore the different aspects of the veterinary world from great speakers such as r. Andi Lear on being a food animal intern, r. Johnston on exotic animal surgery, to r. Melora Whittig-stredge who makes house calls. n addition to meetings, the Pre-et Club also has activities every week. ome activities we have done in the past are a heart dissection, a dairy farm tour, animal movie nights, and volunteer projects with enkai Animal anctuary and the Wolf anctuary. ther exciting programs to look forward to are our veterinary shadow program as well as our service projects with the university including Fall Clean up and CUnity! peakers -Melissa Matiatos, President N L At every general meeting, the Pre-et Club invites veterinarians and others who work with animals to speak about a variety of topics in veterinary medicine. Previous topics include exotic animal surgery, ethics, running a wild animal sanctuary, and foaling management for horses. olunteer he Pre-et Club is proudly involved in a large number of community service opportunities, many of which involve animals. ome volunteer activities include volunteering at the WLF anctuary, working with Animal House and Fort Collins Cat escue during CUnity, volunteering at the Wild Animal anctuary, and participating in Cans Around the val.
7 hadowing very pring the Pre-et Club runs a shadowing program that allows members to shadow a veterinarian for a day! Participants can see firsthand what a typical veterinarian s day consists of and get a behind-the-scenes look at veterinary medicine. G Pre-et ay 2013 very Fall semester in ctober, the Pre-et Club hosts an event called Pre-et ay. his is a day full of wet labs and lectures, and a panel with veterinary students. ur labs offer a great way to gain hands-on experience and the lectures cover a variety of interesting and unique aspects of veterinary medicine. his year s Pre-et ay will include labs on equines, large animal alternative medicine, first aid, small animal dissection, large animal necropsy, bird and reptile handling, exotics, and learning how to handle upset owners. ours he Pre-et Club often goes on tours of facilities related to veterinary medicine and professions relating to animals. Previous tours have included dairy farms, the CU eterinary eaching Hospital, and the enver Aquarium. N L
