Veterinarian s Oath Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge. I will practice my profession conscientiously, with dignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics. I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence. 2
Welcome, Class of 2019! Dear Class of 2019, Congratulations! After months of anticipation and excitement, your journey is finally beginning. Over the next four years, you will face some of your greatest challenges and have some of your most satisfying victories. Family and classmates, They are two things in life you can t really choose. In a short amount of time, they will become one in the same. I encourage you to build these relationships with other students and faculty because they are the foundation we use to overcome the obstacles we face everyday. This book is designed to help you form those bonds by becoming involved in the Purdue Veterinary community. There are numerous clubs to appeal to the interest of any student, allowing for greater experience and knowledge beyond the curriculum. Many events are taught by faculty or prominent figures within the field, providing excellent opportunity for networking. You will have several occasions this fall to learn which clubs best suite you. Please feel free to contact me with any questions! Welcome to Purdue CVM, Clayton Carr SCAVMA President carr20@purdue.edu 3
SCAVMA and SAVMA What is SCAVMA? Purdue s Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association is the largest organization in the vet school. SCAVMA has a series of dinner meetings each semester that highlight hot topics in veterinary medicine, business, and education. Additionally, the organization will host several social and charity events throughout the year. SCAVMA membership benefits include: Membership awards for your second, third, and forth years including a senior gift towards graduation gowns Funding assistance for educational trips, social events, and international travel Opportunity to attend SAVMA Symposium held every spring SAVMA enrollment and membership benefits What is SAVMA? The Student American Veterinary Medical Association is a national organization that represents over 11,000 students around the world. As a member of SCAV- MA, you are automatically enrolled in SAVMA. Each SCAVMA sends two delegates into the SAVMA House of Delegates, a group that meets twice yearly to discuss changes among the individual chapters and to update everyone on changes in government and education. One House of Delegates meeting occurs during SAVMA Symposium and the other during the AVMA Convention. SAVMA membership benefits include: Reduced rates for journals such as the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Journal of Veterinary Research Insurance at special rates through the AVMA (health, liability, malpractice, etc.) Free membership to the AVMA upon graduation and reduced rates for an additional 2 years a $195 value Free registration to the National AVMA Convention held in July Access to the AVMA Veterinary Career Center and Personal Financial Planning Tool 4
Class Representation Class Representatives Each class elects a student SCAVMA Representative. The class SCAVMA Representative is responsible for attending executive board meetings twice each month and relaying information to and from their classmates. Class SCAVMA Representatives also relay information to their class from the executive board when needed, and are usually very helpful when it comes time to recruit volunteers for class activities such as Café Night, Open House, etc. You will be asked to choose a class SCAVMA rep shortly after classes begin. This is different than the class reps (usually 3) that are chosen to relay information to professors regarding scheduling, etc. Curriculum Committee Representatives Each class also elects two members to sit on the curriculum committee each year. One member is the representative and one is the alternate. Curriculum Committee members are required to attend meetings once each month and to participate in discussions with the faculty members and other student members regarding the courses, off-campus block assignments and feedback from the individual classes each year. This is an excellent way to gain inside knowledge about courses and scheduling and to have a voice in discussions that will directly affect your education. 5
SAVMA Delegates SCAVMA is part of a larger national organization, SAVMA. Each year there are two meetings in which representatives from our school are joined by reps from all of the Vet Schools and issues important to our careers and education are addressed. SAVMA Symposium is hosted by a different veterinary school each year. This past spring it was held at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis MN. On March of 2016 it will be held at Iowa State University. The second meeting is the annual AVMA Convention. It was held in Boston this past summer. In August of 2016 it will be held in San Antonio. The SAVMA House of Delegates follows the guidelines set forth in the AVMA Constitution and votes on issues that are at the forefront of our concern. Our Purdue SAVMA Delegates attend both of these annual meetings to represent Purdue s Student Chapter, as well as attend the SCAVMA President s Council meetings to stay up to date on the workings of SCAVMA here at Purdue. These positions are a wonderful; way to network with students and veterinarians working within the AVMA and SAVMA. 6
Christian Veterinary Mission Fellowship Christian Veterinary Mission Fellowship is the student chapter of Christian Veterinary Mission, CVM. The organization s mission is to challenge, empower, and facilitate veterinarians to serve others through their profession, living out their Christian faith. The student chapter encourages one another within the school through weekly meetings, devotionals, service projects for the community, and mission trips. In addition, CVM provides networking with other veterinary students and veterinarians at weekend events known as Real Life Real Impact. This club has had the opportunity to do a short-term mission trip and plans to continue this tradition for future students. The fall call out meeting will connect you with students that will encourage you in faith and studies throughout your time at Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine. 7
Student Chapter of the American Association of Feline Practitioners The SCAAFP, otherwise know as "Feline Club" at Purdue, is a club all about cats. Each year the officers arrange meetings with various speakers to talk about different aspects of feline medicine. Examples of topics covered at meetings include feline cardiology, feline urinary diseases, and feline behavior. The Feline Club also holds various physical examination and palpation labs throughout the year to help hone our skills on live animals. Some of the fun events outside the vet school include a trip to a local feline exclusive practice and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Indianapolis Zoo s Veterinary Hospital. The club also works with Clinton County Humane Society every year to help them prepare cats for adoption. It is a great opportunity to obtain hands on experience with physical exams, blood draws, FeLV/FIV testing, fecals, etc. This is an enjoyable club that is great for any aspiring small animal clinician to learn a little more about feline medicine! 8
Equine Club The student chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (SCAAEP) is active at the vet school. In addition to holding monthly meetings on various topics, there also are several wet labs during the year. The fall wet lab at the Purdue horse farm allows first years to practice venipuncture, second years passing a nasogastric tube, and third years abdominocentisis. Also, Texas A&M hosts a wet lab every January that chapter members attend. Purdue also will host an AAEP sponsored wet lab. The topic is yet to be determined, but previous topics have been dentistry and farriery. Equine club grooms, vaccinates, and de-worms the horses at the Purdue farm. Every other week the club holds equine rounds in the large animal hospital and a clinician, resident, or intern goes over the actual cases in the hospital. The equine club is a great organization for students with horse experience, as well as those who have minimal equine exposure and want to gain knowledge and practical experience. 9
Exotics Club If you love ferrets, parrots, reptiles, dolphins, primates, raptors, or any other animals not covered extensively in CVM curriculum, you belong in the Exotics Club! This club meets with specialists in zoo, wildlife, exotic, and aquatic medicine, hosting a number of lectures, wet labs, and other activities throughout the year. Some field trips scheduled in the past that were open to club members only included: Lincoln Park, Brookfield Zoo and/or Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Indianapolis Zoo, a volunteer day at Exotic Feline Rescue Center, and many more. Annual dues of $10 help cover some of the costs of meetings and field trips. Past activities include: -Behind the scenes tours with veterinarians at Indianapolis Zoo, Shedd Aquarium, and Fort Wayne Children s Zoo -Reptile PE and handling lab -Fish anesthesia and necropsy lab -TB and Chronic Wasting Disease surveillance in deer with USDA -Wildlife rehabilitation lab with Wildcat Wildlife Center Members also often attend conferences including: -American Association of Zoo Veterinarians -Marine Mammal Conference at the University of Wisconsin -Annual Exotic Animal Symposium at University of Missouri 10
Veterinary Student Resource Center (VSRC) The Veterinary Student Resource Center is a student-run organization dedicated to provide comprehensive reviews for exams and invaluable study aid materials for students. These sessions focus on classes where students commonly struggle, including Physiology, Histology, Immunology, Parasitology, and Pathology. In addition to providing group reviews, one-on -one study sessions, and mock A&I orals, the VSRC also make several study guides available through Blackboard. 11
Student Chapter of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine The Purdue Student Chapter of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (SCACVIM) strives to educate veterinary students about the advanced veterinary specialties of small animal internal medicine, large animal internal medicine, neurology, cardiology, and oncology. Regular case rounds and discussions with faculty, labs with hands on exposure to advanced clinical procedures, and workshops on topics such as client communication and clinical problem solving provide veterinary students with a broad range of knowledge and experience beyond the scope of the typical veterinary school curriculum. Topics covered in chapter activities have included; case-based problem solving involving varying disciplines and species, how to prepare for advanced veterinary education, hands on experience with procedures such as echocardiography, round table discussions with faculty, and much more. 12
Lynn Hall Fitness Club The Lynn Hall Fitness Club is open to all of the faculty, staff, and students affiliated with Lynn Hall. We recognize that Veterinary Medicine can, at times, be stressful. We aim to help all of our members improve their personal health and wellness by providing opportunities to listen to educational talks, participate in a number of physical activities, and also create a stronger sense of community within Lynn Hall. 13
Purdue One Health Club One Health Club is beginning it s first full year as a club. As individuals soon joining a health profession, we recognize the value of collaboration, education and exploration outside our realm to really make a positive impact on our planet. With this One Health concept in hand, we are seeking to reach out to others at Purdue to collaborate as students and future colleagues, to spark connections, increase awareness, and to have discussions about the issues impacting us and our future. From zoonotic/emerging diseases, global food crisis, issues facing various professions, to antibiotic resistance, we want to bring in speakers to present different perspectives, have case discussions, and many other ideas are in the works! We will be offering collaboration and connections among various professions represented here at. A particular focus will be placed on those involved in the health of humans, animals, and the environment. We will also be involved in education and awareness in particular having our members explore outside their own major. Development as a professional is important, we will help members learn a systems approach, and how to think about culture, societal beliefs, etc. when forming plans to solve issues. 14
Student Chapter of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists Purdue s Student Chapter of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (SCACVP) works to make pathology relevant to all veterinary students through various wet labs, guest speakers and other activities that highlight a career in veterinary pathology. There are many avenues a veterinary pathologist may take whether working for the pharmaceutical industry, government, academia, or as a consultant. We will try to bring speakers from these different areas so that you can get a better idea of what opportunities are available in this unique field. Our lectures and wet labs address anatomic and clinical pathology. 15
Pets for People Our club is for anyone that wants to volunteer in the community by taking animals on visits to nursing homes and schools. All pets in the program must be certified and we will help you train for the test and pay for your testing and registration. For members without a pet of their own, we can also use certified rescue animals on the visits. In order for your pet to become a Delta Society animal, they should enjoy people and be able to listen to basic training commands. We currently have dogs, cats, and llamas certified for visits. We go on weekly visits to a local daycare for underprivileged 3-5 year olds and make visits to local nursing homes. Members can visit as many or as few times as wish. 16
Purdue Veterinary Technology Student Association We are very lucky to be one of the few schools to have a veterinary technology program as part of the vet school. Please see the following from the PVTSA President: Purdue Veterinary Technology Student Association is an organization designed for vet tech students of all grades. We volunteer at the Humane Society and the Columbian Park Zoo in events such as Boo at the Zoo. We also do fundraisers such as bake sales. We have speakers during the semester from companies like Pfizer and Merial, to help us learn more about products and client education. 17
Society for Theriogenology The Theriogenology Club is Purdue s student chapter of the Society for Theriogenology. This club focuses on reproduction and contraception in all species that a veterinarian might see. All veterinary tracks can benefit from belonging to this club and attending its meetings and wet labs. If you still need convincing though, the top 10 reasons to join the club are listed below: 10. No other club talks about this much sex 9. This is the only club that covers every species from reptiles to cows. 8. Our club has the best wet labs. 7. Our club has some of the best food. 6. We can have very interesting conversations about donkeys now (and a new found respect). 5. Where else in vet school are you going to see a stallion being collected? 4. You are prepared for any emergency fetotomy you may have to perform if asked. 3. You can spot an embryo a mile away. 2. Two-headed semen causes excitement. The number one reason to join SFT: So you know exactly what is meant by this top ten!!! 18
Food Animal Club The Food Animal Club provides students interested in food animal medicine the opportunity to learn about current issues facing food animal veterinarians as well as different aspects of the profession. Meetings provide good food and one-on-one interaction between the students and the speaker. Membership in this club enables the student to attend the annual AABP meeting in the fall and AASV meeting in the spring with minimal cost to the student. This is made possible by our major fund-raising event, the Food Tent, during the annual Vet School Open House in April, in which we also host a Petting Zoo. Rounds are held every other week with a clinician in the Large Animal Hospital to discuss interesting cases and provide a real-life view of the profession. We are a fun club and are always welcome to new members! Feel free to contact any of us if you have any questions. 19
Student Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society Do you want to learn how to perform CPR on a dog? How about place a tracheotomy tube on a cat? Perhaps you d like the chance to experience the small animal ICU before your third and fourth year? If so, the Student Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society may be the perfect club for you!. At SVECCS, our mission is to promote the education and involvement of veterinary students in all aspects of emergency and critical care medicine. We are an interactive club geared toward those students interested in the possibility of one day working in emergency medicine! We aim to educate our members about some of the commonly seen emergencies in small (and large) animal practice as well as the differences in the life of an emergency vet. We offer monthly meetings with esteemed speakers as well as other hands-on opportunities. In the past we offered a fall wet lab where members were able to practice common small animal emergency skills such as placing chest and tracheotomy tubes, urinary catheterization and much more! We also offered a spring CPR demonstration and lab! If you enjoy small (or large!) animal medicine, have an interest in or wish to learn more about emergency medicine, and want the opportunity to get some hands-on experience, then SVECCS is the club for you! 20
Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA) Surveys of recent veterinary graduates have shown that once you have finished your veterinary curriculum you will most certainly be ready to examine and diagnose patients; however, preparation for resumes and CV's, interviews, contract negotiation, paying off debt, client communication and numerous other business-related skills will be lacking. The VBMA is a very active student club that invites speakers to provide information during lunchtime and evening lectures on these important topics that we will all encounter throughout our careers. The VBMA also works hard to provide networking opportunities and workshops on important job seeking skills such as resume writing and interviewing. MISSION STATEMENT: The Veterinary Business Management Association is a student-driven organization dedicated to advancing the profession through increasing business knowledge, creating networking opportunities, and empowering students to achieve both personal and professional goals. 21
Veterinary Students as One in Culture and Ethnicity (VOICE) VOICE is a student run organization that addresses a need for socio-cultural awareness that is not part of the current core veterinary curriculum. We plan to be an organized and unified student voice contributing to enhancing the diversity of the profession and the cultural competence of veterinary students. VOICE is a unique club that bridges some of the gulf between students and professors, vet students and tech students, and encourages people from varying backgrounds to exchange ideas, celebrate diversity, and discover common ground. All are welcome to experience annual events such as melting pot, panel discussions, keynote speakers, and learn more about your professors, fellow students, different ideas and perspectives. 22
Shelter Medicine Club The Student Chapter of American Shelter Veterinarians (SCASV) is not only about exposing students to shelter medicine but it is also about being involved in the community. In the past we have joined with the Feline Club to put together an adoption for homeless cats in the area at a local PetSmart and also went to Almost Home Shelter in Lafayette to perform fecals, heartworm tests, and Feline Leukemia/FIV tests. Already for this year we have two guest speakers already planned to speak to us about various shelter topics. Other things in the process of being planned on for the year are a low-cost vaccine clinic for the Tippecanoe community, a suturing wet-lab, and pet portrait photos. We have a lot of plans for the future, please join us and become a part of this new and emerging club! 23
Internation Veterinary Student Association This will be the first year for the Purdue IVSA club. The IVSA is a great organization dedicated to promoting the international application of veterinary skills, education and knowledge. Our mission is to benefit the animals and people of the world by harnessing the potential and dedication of veterinary students to promote the international application of veterinary skills, education and knowledge. It s free to join and the benefits are endless ranging from energetic people to informative seminars to the opportunity to participate in exchange programs with schools all around the world. Come join us for our first year bringing travel, diverse cultures, and veterinary medicine together. 24
SCAVMA Committees Documents and Revision Committee The Document Revision Committee helps plan and oversee revisions to SCAVMA documents including the Constitution, Standard Operations Protocol and Pet Food Proposal Guidelines. This committee helps keep our student government running smoothly. Chair: Kristen Mozeika 18 Philanthropy Committee The Philanthropy Committee helps plan and oversee philanthropic events that benefit the greater Lafayette community on behalf of the students at the School of Veterinary Medicine. Past events include the annual Dog Jog Run: a 5K run where student, faculty, and the general public come together with the pets for a day of exercise and fun! The Philanthropy Committee also organizes fundraising for different groups such as Heifer International. Chair: Sarah Fisher 18 Student Bookstore (PVSA) The Student Bookstore is a student-based organization which handles all of your needs from textbooks to clinical supplies. In addition the Bookstore has all CVM clothing and related merchandise. The Bookstore is open over lunchtime during the week, so you can always stop in and shop. As the holiday season gets closer, the Bookstore will send information to people of your choice, so they may order various CVM gifts for you.
