David Nicolson said the dualpurpose traits of the Dohne provided them with more alternatives in their enterprise. I think the biggest reason my brother and I went into breeding Dohnes was to give us options, he said. We used to be a solely woolgrowing operation, with a few excess sheep to sell; we liked the choices and options available through breeding Dohnes. The Nicolsons own 5000-hectare Truelands near Campbell Town, Tasmania. Mr Nicolson said the main enterprise was their flock of 3000 breeding ewes. They also run a small Angus herd of about 120 breeding cows. The decision to switch to Dohnes came after having seen examples of the breed at the Bendigo show. After seeing the Dohnes and hearing about their positive attributes we looked into the breed s history, Mr Nicolson said. They perform well in tough conditions, with their doing ability and reproductive success being driving factors in our choice to purchase rams. He said their initial purchase of 14 Dohne rams proved they had made the right decision. So far they have done what we expected and more, Mr Nicolson said. They are now solely using Dohne rams. With their Dohne program relatively new, there is still a mixture of breeds among the 3000 ewes being lambed down. We have 1250 first-cross ewes that have been mated and the remainder are Merinos, Mr Nicolson said. We have about 900 first-cross hogget ewes to come into the flock next year and there are also some second-cross lambs on the ground. We are trying to build our numbers up and are using the first-cross ewes to do this. He said their success with the first-cross ewes had meant they were looking to eventually have a 4000-head breeding flock. We are now moving towards a ewe flock producing lambs, Mr Nicolson said. Instead of retaining our wethers for wool we are selling them as lambs. With the Dohnes, we continue to sell wether lambs and are averaging $100 to $110 a head off grass. For the last two years the wethers have gone as trade lambs at 40 to 50 kilograms and score two and three. We have sold these through AuctionsPlus because it is the best market at present in Tasmania. Two-thirds of the brothers property is steep, hilly, bush country with native grasses and a rate of one dry sheep equivalent to 1.21ha. He said although they grew oats as a feed source, they tried not to supplementary feed their sheep grain, but stored some feed for tough seasons. We are really happy with the first-cross Dohne ewes performance, Mr Nicolson said. From the age of 12 months they spend about six months in the bush and we have had no trouble whatsoever with them. They really are easy care, we have had minimal problems during lambing and they are returning from the bush country in good condition. Mr Nicolson said their management tasks started with a six-week joining at the beginning of March, with lambing from August to mid-september. Hoggets are shorn in November, lambs in December and ewes in April, before the ewes are scanned in June. Prior to breeding Dohnes the focus of the brothers operation had been wool, so the Dohne s dual wool/meat traits appealed to them. Mr Nicolson said the wool quality and style were still a huge part of sire selection criteria. Our micron average for the first-crosses is 18.5, he said. We have taken care when selecting rams and look for bright white, crimpy wool. This has transferred through in to the first-crosses. We aim to remain around the 18.5-micron average. The Nicolsons made a bold decision to shift to Dohnes and the results have been positive. I would definitely advise people who might be thinking about breeding Dohnes to try it, he said. In fact, they re even giving some Merino producers a run for their money. The Clarks Dohne wool clip averages between and 20-micron, with ewes cutting five to six kilograms. We didn t lose as much wool cut as we thought we would by moving to the Dohnes, Mr Clark said. When the Dohnes were first introduced, yields were lower than would have been liked, but Mr Clark said this had improved over recent years. We ve never had fantastic yields in this country, but now we re getting about 67 to 69 per cent, which is where we were with our Merinos, he said. Mr Clark (pictured) also ruffled a few feathers at the local Cunnamulla Show last year, where one of his fleeces was champion in the red tip category, beating a number of pure Merino entries. And with the focus on wool still remaining in the operation, Mr Clark said they had just renovated their shearing shed in time for shearing in May this year. We installed sloping catching pens, which make it easier for the shearers to tip the sheep and drag them to the board, he said. Easier finishing at Pabra didn t want to be solely a meat producer. Mr Clark said he selected Dohnes as he liked their constitution and wool type. They had a better wool type than some other dual-purpose breeds, and because I wanted to keep a little focus on wool we went with the Dohnes, he said. The move into Dohnes got off to a shakey start, according to Mr Clark. The first three years we had such bad seasons that we had to sell all our lambs we weren t able to keep any ewe lambs as replacements, he said. But Mr Clark stayed with the Dohnes, and by 2007 they had shifted to using only Dohne rams in the operation. Now the Clarks have upgraded their flock to the point where some of their ewes are pure Dohnes. Mr Clark said they were keen to stick with the Dohnes. We re finding that they do seem to convert feed a bit better, and in the last six months our stock are in quite good condition, while some of the more Merino types aren t, he said. We re comfortable with how they handle the dry and cover the country. Mr Clark said they looked for a big-framed sheep with a plain body, and this had helped them to cease mulesing. We modified our mules and got smaller, but it got to the point where we just didn t need to do it and we stopped in 2008, he said. While Mr Clark said they had finished some of their wether lambs before, this wasn t their aim. We re geared up to sell the wethers as store lambs, he said. But when they had finished lambs, Mr Clark said the Dohnes finished easier than a Merino lamb, and were more marketable. The surplus female sheep are also sought-after, according to Mr Clark. Our cull ewe weaners have gone to a repeat buyer for the last few years, who joins them to terminal sires, he said. Our older ewes also sell well too there s always demand for them. Sheep are marketed in a number of ways, including private sales, AuctionsPlus, saleyards and over the hooks, and are mostly marketed into NSW. D OHNES have shown the ability to handle the sometimes harsh conditions on the Clark family s property Pabra, near Cunnamulla in south-west Queensland. Philip and Joanne Clark own Pabra with Mr Clark s brother James, who manages the property as well as owning and managing the local independent newspaper. Philip and Joanne live on a small property at Oman Ama, near Inglewood, 600 kilometres east of Cunnamulla, and Mr Clark travels to Cunnamulla about once every four weeks to work on the property. The Dohne flock, which runs on the 24,280-hectare Pabra, is owned by Philip and Joanne. They run between 2000 and 3500 ewes in the operation, depending on the season, with the operation traditionally running a Merino flock. In 2004 the Clarks began to introduce Dohne rams to their Merino operation, looking to move to a dual-purpose flock. We were looking to limit our exposure to the wool market, but I still wanted to keep an interest in wool, Mr Clark said. 7 DJO0725_017_ qxp 12/07/2013 2:45 PM Page EGN17 NEW SOUTH WALES A smooth switch to Dohnes H AVING a life-long passion for sheep breeding and knowing his farming region have been the keys to John Witts success in producing commercial Dohnes. Mr Witts farms with his son George on about 10,000 hectares which is split between two properties at Collarenebri in northern NSW. The property, Trelawney, has been in the family for more than 100 years and is home to a herd of 400 Santa Gertrudis breeding cows and part of the family s typical 1000ha wheat crop. However, it is the property Munargo that is home to the 2600-head flock of Dohne breeding ewes which comprises the family s commercial sheep enterprise. Mr Witts proudly claims the sheep program as his personal operation. Sheep pay the bills year-in, year-out, no matter the conditions, he said. In a drought it costs a lot to feed cattle and takes longer to get a return from them. The commitment to remaining a sheep breeder led Mr Witts to embrace Dohne genetics, essentially moving away from their traditional Merino flock. We originally had Merino ewes, he said. I went to Dohnes for the meat side, while still maintaining a decent fleece. From what I had seen of Dohnes I thought they had the best Merino type of wool compared to some of the other alternative breeds. He said when he made the change to Dohnes it was a case of all in, without a backward glance. When I went to Dohnes I went completely that way, there were no half measures, he said. I have bred them through, with third- and fourth-cross lambs on the ground now and the aim is to keep going to pure Dohne. Mr Witts said he treated the Dohnes the same as Merinos and had experienced better results The Witts family walked their Dohne flock to a neighbour s property during the February 2012 floods, which covered 90 per cent of their property. from the change in breed genetics. I m a sheep breeder and I breed every year no matter what the conditions, he said. I join on a certain date and will feed through lambing if required. Mr Witts said they had switched to an autumn lambing and hoped that if seasonal conditions were good they could utilise the natural clovers for feed, however when this was not the case he sourced locally grown cottonseed for supplementary feed. I join in late October for six to eight weeks, Mr Witts said. The ratio at joining is about 1.3 per cent of rams, which is quite a bit less than Merinos. Lambing starts from April onwards and Mr Witts said they are expecting 105pc or better on lambing percentages. Our lambings don t really vary, it doesn t matter whether it s a good season or not, we still get big numbers, he said. I have found the Dohnes to be easy care at lambing, producing little lambs. We don t seem to have any problems at weaning with them either. Mr Witts said they managed a self-replacing flock and cull ewes were sold to prime lamb breeders, while gauging seasonal and market conditions when deciding how to sell their wether lambs. Our cast-for-age ewes have been sold to southern NSW prime lamb breeders at 4.5 to five years of age for ongoing breeding, and because of numbers we are able to run younger sheep. Mr Witts said wether lambs were sometimes sold at five to six months of age as stores for somebody else to finish, as they did last year. (The year before) we fed them ourselves and sold them at 12 months of age, between 50 to 60 kilograms liveweight. We have no problem getting weight on the Dohnes, we found we had a bit of trouble with the Merinos while they still had their lamb s teeth. We have also found that after the first-cross you lose the horns on the wethers, making it a lot better for drenching and marking. Mr Witts said he had been careful when selecting rams for breeding, relying on assistance from sheep classer and Dohne assessor James Koster, but ultimately making the final decision himself. I lean towards the wool traits a bit when selecting rams, he said. At the same time I am looking for a big, plain-bodied, meaty sheep carrying a medium wool type. Mr Witts has proven selecting for genetic traits that suit your enterprise certainly pays off. Our micron has not changed from when we previously bred Merinos, he said. We still average 20- to micron. Due to the plain bodies we were able to give up mulesing a couple of crosses ago, we simply did not need to mules anymore. Mr Witts said they chose to shear in February prior to lambing. The switch to Dohne genetics has been a smooth transition for Mr Witts and he credits the easy care, dual-purpose traits as the reason. 9 DJO0725_019_ qxp 12/07/ :44 PM Page EGN19 NEW SOUTH WALES Converted to Dohne quality W AYNE Culverson was a third generation NSW Merino wool producer and among those who scoffed at the idea of meat sheep producing wool on par with the mighty Merino. But thanks to a push by his wife Lynette, the Orange district graziers are enjoying the increased survivability, fertility and yield of Dohnes at Heatherdale. A numbers man, Mr Culverson needs proof on paper before he ll jump into a major production decision and after several years of strategic testing, got all the proof he needed to breed further towards a purebred self-replacing Dohne flock. The Culversons were among the first commercial operators in the Orange district to try Dohnes when in 2003 they spent time assessing sheep and comparing Dohne and Merino fleeces. We were asked to pick which was Dohne and which was Merino and we couldn t pick the difference, Mr Culverson said. It was my wife who gave me the push. I m a third generation fine wool Merino producer so it took a bit to push me over the line just because I was concerned about the wool on the Dohnes, but I m so glad my wife convinced me. When we went to buy the rams I still tended to always put the wool first rather than the meat side of it. He started as the main selector in the first two years, but Mrs Culverson pointed out that the flock needed more body, so she chooses for body size first, before her husband selects for wool. They have compared wool tests since 2004, providing figures that cemented their breed changeover. What we found in the first year was a 46 cents a kilogram difference in price in favour of Dohnes, a 255c/kg difference again in favour of the Dohnes in 2005, and in 2006 it was back to 130c/kg in favour of the Dohnes, and the top price for the Dohne wool was 970c/kg compared to the Merino at 840c/kg, Mr Culverson said. He said the Dohne wool was 16.2-micron, just 0.6-micron higher than the Merinos micron fleece, and the Dohne wool yielded slightly better each year. The big difference was in the staple length, he said. In the first year it was 73 millimetres for the Dohnes and 63mm for the Merino. In the second year it was a really extreme drought year where Lambing hits the mark LAMBING percentages are expected to hit 120 per cent when Wayne and Lynette Culverson reach full-blood Dohne stage. A critical point was in all testing years, both the Dohnes and Merinos were run as one mob with equal conditions.
