4 Trade Fair in the Ballroom Esplanade Fremantle Saturday 21 September Feline Stream Fiona Campbell Diagnosis of feline heart disease Confidently facing the challenge of diagnosing heart disease and heart failure in cats in general practice; physical examination, diagnostic testing and when to consider referral. Conference Registration AVA Welcome Sponsored by Provet Equine Stream Equine allergies Allergic dermatitis is relatively common in the horse. Urticaria and pruritus are the most frequently recognized clinical signs. The ability to diagnose and treat the most common causes of allergic dermatitis should prove useful to the practicing veterinarian Julia Beatty Dealing with dyspnoeic cats: triage, stabilization, localization The cat in respiratory distress is a common emergency in companion animal practice. A stepwise approach to the successful management of these tricky cases will be presented. Kirsty Gallacher Mare reproduction Case studies involving the problem breeding mare and a novel approach of using the pudendal nerve block for selected reproductive surgeries Break Julia Beatty Pleural effusion in the cat: a practical approach to determining aetiology Treatment options and prognosis for the cat with pleural fluid accumulation vary depending on the cause of the effusion. Using case examples, this lecture will focus on a practical approach to getting an early diagnosis. Kirsty Gallacher Stallion reproduction Semen evaluation and its merits and applications for the equine practitioner Lunch Plenary What your boss doesn t want you to know, but you probably should A discussion about finances, how the practice pie gets sliced up, profit margins, costs, salaries and conditions Fiona Campbell Treatment of feline heart disease Cats do it differently with congestive failure, thromboembolism and sudden death all possible outcomes for the most common heart diseases in cats what can we do in practice to maximize quality of life and prolong survival? Break Fiona Campbell Optimizing the management of congestive heart failure in cats and dogs What drug? When? How much? And how to approach commonly encountered complications in treating congestive heart failure till late Mystery Gala Dinner - in the Ballroom Esplanade Fremantle Equine urticaria Horses develop urticaria probably more often than any other species. Insect bites are presumed to be the most common cause of urticaria in the horse, with contact dermatitis and drug reactions less commonly seen. Equine Pastern dermatitis (greasy heel) Pastern dermatitis can be a frustrating disease to treat depending on cause and environmental circumstances.
5 Sunday 22 September 2013 Feline Stream Equine Stream Young Speakers Program Registration Fiona Campbell Diagnostic tools for cardiac cases in general practice Utilizing diagnostic tools commonly available in general practice for dogs and cats with suspected heart disease in order to optimize diagnostic yield and benefit patient outcome. Plenary Equine sarcoid: evidenced-based versus economic-based treatment options Equine sarcoid is the most common skin tumour in horses and causes substantial economic loss within the equine industry. Early recognition coupled with appropriate treatment is paramount. Designing and planning the vet hospital or industry of the future Break Julia Beatty Feline aspergillosis: is it slipping under the radar? Ziggy Chester Corneal ulceration in the horse Aspergillosis is an emerging problem in cats worldwide. Clinically indistinguishable from other upper respiratory tract problems in cats, diagnosis relies on maintaining an index of suspicion for this disease. The practical relevance of research in Australia will be shared to discovery of a new feline, canine and human pathogen, aspergillus felis, a major aetiological agent of aspergillosis in cats. The most common ophthalmic problem encountered by the equine veterinarian is the management of corneal ulcers. This lecture covers the diagnosis, pathogenesis, medical and surgical treatment of bacterial and fungal keratitis from the most simple to the more complex corneal ulcers. Christopher Sun Fracture epidemiology in the Thoroughbred racehorse Christopher Sun Resting the Thoroughbred racehorse, fracture prevention or propagation Meng Siak Characterisation of methicillinresistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius from cases of canine pyoderma in Australia Renata Costa Factors influencing blood pressure in anaesthetised dogs undergoing elective desexing Sue Foster What does a positive test mean? This lecture provides a practical assessment of test results for clinical patients and can be applied to a wide range of clinical situations Sue Foster Pitfalls of laboratory testing This lecture will help get the most out of routine clinical pathology results with an in-depth, interactive session on problems that can occur in both in-house testing and in commercial laboratories Julia Beatty Hypercalcaemia in cats: when to act and what to do Increasingly, hypercalcaemia is being recognised in our feline patients but information sources on investigating and treating this problem in cats have yet to keep pace. The pathophysiology, diagnostic investigation and treatment options for hypercalcaemic cats will be discussed. Ziggy Chester Pre-purchase examination of the eye in the horse The pre-purchase examination is used to determine whether there are any observable ocular abnormalities. The veterinarian needs to be able to recognise whether any detected ocular abnormalities are significant and would prevent the affected horse from performing. Lunch sponsored by Novartis with Break Julia Beatty Update on testing for FIV and FeLV: new technologies meet old pathogens Recent advances that impact on FIV and FeLV testing include vaccination for FIV, an improved understanding of the pathogenesis of FeLV and an expanding range of testing options. Deciding which cats to test, which test to use and interpreting the results relies on an understanding of the epidemiology and pathogenesis, as well as the performance and availability of different tests. Anthea Raisis Inhalant anaesthesia for horses A review of the inhalant agents currently available for maintaining anaesthesia in the hospital environment. The pros and cons of each agent will be discussed. Anthea Raisis Pros and cons of field anaesthesia A review of the techniques available for inducing and maintaining anaesthesia in horses in field situations with particular reference to the different alpha 2 agonists available for use. The advantages and disadvantages of each of the techniques will be discussed. Anthea Raisis Equine analgesia and controversies A review of the agents and techniques available for providing analgesia peri-operatively in the equine surgical patient. The advantages and disadvantages of the different drugs and techniques will be discussed. 8 Australian Veterinary Association Western Australia Division Young Speakers Program Fracture epidemiology in the Throroughbred racehorse Dr. Christopher T Sun BVSc, MRCVS Fractures are a global welfare concern in the racing Thoroughbred and as veterinarians, it is our responsibility not only to address the health of the individual fractured horse, but also to understand the disease on a population scale. Is a horse more at risk while racing or in training? Are there true differences in fractures between regions or can there be an alternative explanation? The following presentation will provide an historic overview of fracture epidemiological studies and discuss the challenges facing the industry. Resting the Thoroughbred racehorse, fracture prevention or propagation Dr. Christopher T Sun BVSc, MRCVS We associate resting or spelling as giving a chance for racehorses to recuperate or recover after a period of high strain exercise, but can we in fact be causing more harm than good? The following presentation will expose why rest may actually be bad for a racehorse. Characterisation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius from cases of canine pyoderma in Australia Dr Meng Siak BVSc BVMS (Hons) MANZCVS (Canine Medicine) Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) is an emerging pathogen in veterinary companion animal practice. In this presentation, we report the isolation of MRSP from cases of pyoderma in dogs and their genetic relatedness to internationally dissiminated MRSP clones. We will also briefly discuss diagnostics and treatment options for MRSP. Mechanical testing of a PEEK or Steinmann LCP-rod model Dr Lucas Beierer BVSc, MACVSc, Grad Dip Ed A plate-rod repair is employed in the management of diaphyseal fractures in dogs when reinforcement is required beyond a standard plate repair. Despite their benefit, bicortical screw placement in plate-rod repairs can be very challenging due to screw impingement caused by the intramedullary rod. A novel solution to this problem is the use of a drillable intramedullary implant (PEEK). The biomechanics of this approach will be compared to a standard platerod repair in a locking compression plate model. Unilateral restrobulbar Haematoma following bilateral maxillary nerve block Claire Loughran MRCVS The successful management of a unilateral retro-bulbar, haemorrhage following bilateral maxillary nerve block. Treatment of this condition relies on prompt recognition and treatment of the condition. The corner stone of treatment is providing drainage aimed at decreasing the increased intra-orbital and intraocular pressure. Prevalence of feline immunodeficiency virus in a shelter cat population in Perth Rosamund Yozin The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of FIV infection in a cat shelter population and to assess factors associated with FIV positive status. Delegate Registration Form WHAT S NEW PUSSYCAT? Phalangeal fillet technique for metacarpal pad reconstruction in a dog Dr Tania Shaw BVsc (hons) Neoplasia involving the metacarpal or metatarsal pad may require complete excision of the pad. Loss of the metacarpal or metatarsal pad requires reconstruction with other pad tissue to allow functional weight-bearing on the limb. This is a case report describing the successful use of a bilateral phalangeal fillet technique to reconstruct a weight-bearing surface in a dog following complete excision of its right metacarpal pad for malignant melanoma. Also included in this presentation will be a brief discussion of the canine melanoma vaccine. Internal fixation of adjacent long bones: testing a feline antebrachial fracture model Dr Tim Preston Radius and ulna fractures have been reported to comprise 2-8% of feline long bone fractures. Cats have an interosseous membrane that provides superior supination and pronation and needs to be maintained for dexterity post op. Recent studies suggest that internal fixation of both the radius and ulna may reduce the incidence of complications. This paper aims to discuss differences in feline antebrachial anatomy and function, implant challanges and preliminary results from testing three different locking constructs in a feline antebrachial fracture gap model. Factors influencing blood pressure in anaesthetised dogs undergoing elective desexing Dr Renata Costa This study was performed in healthy dogs desexed at Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital between We explored the association between signalment and hydration status with intraoperative mean arterial blood pressure (MAP). Data collected from 71 dogs showed that age and urine specific gravity best explained the changes in MAP. The association between age and MAP can be explained by immaturity of cardiovascular system in younger dogs. This is likely to increase the sensitivity of these dogs to the depressant effects of anaesthetic drugs particularly when subclinical dehydration is present. The sonographic appearance of gastrointestinal lymphoma in dogs Dr Mika Frances The specific sonographic features of gastrointestinal lymphoma have not been described in isolation in dogs. In this study, 4/15 dogs illustrated that gastrointestinal lymphoma may be present with no sonographic abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract. This is a clinically relevant finding as it provides an indication to biopsy, which may lead to improved sensitivity in detecting this condition. In general the appearance of gastrointestinal lymphoma in dogs is non-specific and overlaps with that of other neoplastic conditions and enteritis. Cytokines in leukoreduced and non-leukoreduced stored canine packed red blood cells Sarah Purcell Stored blood products contain leukocytes and accumulate inflammatory cytokines. The transfusion of leukocytes and cytokines is associated with febrile non-haemolytic transfusion reactions and recipient inflammation. Our study aims to document the concentration of cytokines in stored non-leukoreduced canine packed red blood cells (PRBCs) during storage and compare this to cytokine concentrations in leukoreduced canine PRBCs during storage. Our hypothesis is that non-leukoreduced canine PRBCs will have significantly higher concentrations of cytokines when compared with leukoreduced canine packed red blood cells.
