Our graduates continue to excel as leaders in all facets of the profession in all parts of the world. Here are just a few of the things that make the college an exciting place: The State of Iowa and Iowa State University value veterinary medicine highly and since 2006 they have invested more than $105 million in expanding and renovating the Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center and renovating classrooms and laboratories, making the college an outstanding environment in which to teach, learn, practice veterinary medicine, and perform cutting-edge research. An aggressive assessment program allows us to continuously improve the quality of our education and service, and ensure that we exceed your expectations. We are fully accredited by the AVMA Council On Education. Our veterinary diagnostic services and laboratory protect animal and human health by providing effective diagnostic testing to tens of thousands of clients each year. From circovirus in hogs to HIV, Parkinson s disease, stroke, E. coli, HIV and prion diseases in people, our researchers are having a global impact as they contribute to animal and human health, food safety; and discovery, prevention and treatment of emerging and re-emerging diseases. We are growing our clinical expertise and resources in key areas, including neurology, surgery and ophthalmology. 16 Lecture Descriptions Animal Care and Well-Being: What s Best for the Animal? Aumni Room 2010 This presentation focuses on the confusion concerning the role and function of animals in our society affecting the debate about farm animal care. We will take a closer look at swine production and provide a solid case study of how science-based practices have driven the evolution of modern farm animal care. Animal Welfare, Disconnect between Societal Values and High Tech Agriculture Room 2532 Animal welfare is a complicated issue whereby misunderstanding, differing values and the unwillingness of people to change have led to a polarization similar to that we are currently experiencing in American politics. The secret to finding common ground in the animal welfare issue is acknowledgement that the use of animals for food and fiber is appropriate; but only when we accept that all life is sacred. Bats to Cats: Bridging the Gaps of Comparative Nutrition Room 2532 The objectives of this lecture will be to understand the process of diet formulation for managed exotic species in zoological institutions, and how model species are selected for nutrient requirement comparisons. Behavior Modification and Addressing Unwanted Behaviors in Domestic Animals Room 2532 Veterinarians are often asked to respond to clients with concerns about an animal s behavior, which may be addressed directly in the veterinary clinic or may be referred to animal behavior professionals. In this presentation we will explore the underpinnings of unwanted behaviors, and techniques for behavior modification. Behavior Training for Veterinary Procedures in Zoos Room 1226 This presentation will focus on the benefits and techniques used to train zoo animals to participate in their health-care in a zoological setting. Challenges in Zoological Medicine (Case Studies) Room 1226 This presentation will discuss several case studies on captive wild animals, which will highlight the challenges in dealing with medical problems in non-domestic species. Equine Hoof Room 2226 This talk will provide a basic introduction to the equine hoof capsule with a more in-depth discussion of the hoof wall. Equine Dental Anatomy Room 2226 Knowing the anatomy of equine teeth is important in understanding and managing dental problems and age estimation, which this lecture will provide a basic introduction on. This lecture is recommended to be taken in correspondence with the equine dentistry lab. 16

17 Lecture Descriptions Ethical Issues in the Study of Wild Chimpanzees Alumni Room 2010 This lecture will discuss the changes primatologists studying great apes have experienced recently, Which includes more intervention in cases of medical emergencies. Also being disucssed is the criteria we use to determine whether to intervene in the lives of wild apes and the costs and benefits of doing so, including a discussion on scientific and general ethical concerns. Evaluation of Voluntary Movement Abnormalities of Dogs and Cats Room 1226 Clinical evaluation of the animal with gait disorders and movement abnormalities will be discussed in a case-based format. Discussion will include abnormalities such as lameness, ataxia, hypermetria, and paresis. From Snakes to Swans: A Day in the Life of a Wildlife Veterinarian Room 1226 Lecture about wildlife medicine in general: an intro to the profession, how she got involved, what a typical day at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota looks like, and review some case studies. GI Endoscopy in University Practice Alumni Room 2010 Value/utility of gastrointestinal endoscopy in the diagnosis of GI disease in dogs and cats. Genomics and Clinical Disease Alumni Room 2010 After a shaky start, the revolution has begun. With the advances in genomics and genetics, everyone thought this new medicine would solve all our problems; that genes alone could explain everything. In fact, that did not turn out to be the case, but it is the next generation of genomics technologies that are now beginning to show what might be possible. Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship: The Role of the State Veterinarian Alumni Room 2010 It is important for pre-veterinary students to understand the roles they can be involved within protecting our food supply. Thus, this lecture will cover Iowa agriculture, production systems, the importance of agriculture in the state of Iowa, and an overview of foreign animal disease and emergency preparedness. Lameness in Cattle Room 2226 Lameness is one of the most important health problems in cattle. Our objectives for this session will be to discuss the general concepts of weight bearing in cattle and how those become important in the context of housing, environment, feeding and management conditions in cattle. Measuring Animal Welfare: Research Tools and Application to Farm Animal Care Programs Room 2532 Multi-disciplinary techniques used in the laboratory are helpful to understand an animal response to particular situations, and are especially important in interpretation of data about affective states, such as pain, fear, and contentment. 17

18 Lecture Descriptions Modern Animal Agriculture and Pork Production Alumni Room 2010 This presentation focuses on sustainability to demonstrate why farmers are using modern production practices to do more with less and protect the environment. Spinal Cord Injuries in Dogs: Case Study Room 1226 Discuss different types of injury, how they re becoming more common, treatments available, and research in treating the untreatable cases. A real-life case will be presented and will discuss the treatment and outcome. Studying Chimpanzees in a Savannah Landscape Alumni Room 2010 This lecture will discuss the Fongoli Savanna Chimpanzee Research Project, which includes why the study was initiated, what kinds of research questions are addressed in the study and how the research is conducted on the behavior and ecology of great apes. Swine CSI Room 2226 Diagnostic testing using swine as an example as a way to show what tools we have available and how the veterinarian is critical in interpreting results. The Golden Road to a Successful VMCAS Application and More! Room 2532 You will be let in on many of the secrets of submitting a successful application to veterinary school directly from the folks who run the VMCAS system along with a myriad of other tips and tricks along your golden road. Veterinarians Role in Animal Abuse Cases Room 2532 In this presentation, a case-based approach will be used to discuss animal abuse and neglect in rural communities with emphasis on livestock. Examples of community based response programs will be examined for addressing issues of animal abuse, hoarding, and neglect. Veterinary Toxicology is the CSI of Veterinary Medicine Room 2226 This lecture will discuss what a typical veterinary toxicologist does in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Including how a case is worked up, the diagnostic testing and instrumentation involved, the applicaiton of chemistry and how a final diagnosis is reached. You Never Know What s Around the Next Corner: Animal Research can take You Places You Never Thought You Would Go Room 2532 This talk will summarize the interrelationship between reproduction of sheep in Michigan/England and Scotland, effects of sewage sludge on reproductive health in Scotland, children with gender identity disorders in Norway, and the calming effects of classical music for dogs and possibly other projects, all from the school of veterinary medicine in Glasgow Zoonotic Disease: Public Health in a Zoo Room 1226 The focus of this presentation is the strategies that zoos take to balance the public, employee, and animal health and safety in a zoo environment. 18
