1 Subject: Animal Science Calendar : Timeframe: 1 st 9 Weeks Level/Grade: 9-12 Unit A Knowledge of the employability characteristics of a successful worker Unit B Explanation of animal anatomy and physiology Unit C Determination of the nutritional requirements of ruminant & non-ruminant animals

2 Unit A Objectives: Identify characteristics of a successful entrepreneur; Develop skills in planning and organizing work; Apply required methods and sequences when performing tasks; Select relevant goal-related activities and rank them in order of importance; Examine the benefits of adopting new technology in agricultural applications; Identify proper safety procedures; and Identify types of supervised agricultural experience activities. Unit A Lessons: Students will identify various careers in the Agricultural field. Students will plan and manage supervised agricultural experience programs. Unit B Objectives: Describe the anatomy of bones and bone tissue Explain the physiology of bones Identify the anatomy of the axial skeleton Illustrate the anatomy of voluntary muscles Identify the functions of front limb muscles Recognize the muscles of the rear limb Explain the anatomy of the respiratory system Recognize the anatomy and physiology of the vascular system Describe the anatomy and physiology of the total circulatory system Illustrate the parts of the nervous system Describe the functions of the urinary system Recognize the effects of good or poor health on animal production Explain the role that nutrition plays in animal health Unit B Lessons: Students will describe the physiology and respiratory system Students will identify nutritional differences among various classes and breeds of livestock Students will recognize abnormal behavior or vital signs and indicate a medical relief Students will describe management practices that affect productivity of various classes and breeds of animals Unit C Objectives: After competing the topic(s), the student shall be able to: Describe the anatomy of the digestive system Discuss the importance of anatomy and physiology of accessory digestive organs List information needed to formulate and animal s diet Identify types of concentrate feeds Recognize the types of roughage feeds Explain the advantages of using minerals in livestock feed Recognize ration variations for different classes of animals Discuss feed labeling requirements and the components of a well-balanced ration Explain the changes in nutritional requirements for different stages of animal development Recognize the general guidelines for feeding livestock
