The habitat and faunal composition at some major collecting sites VI. Gazeteer of collection localities Summary Riassunto References I. INTRODUCTION page 253» 253» 254 )) 254» 254» 255 >> 255, 257 )) 287» 293» 293 )) 294 The mammals of Ethiopia, in common with most other aspects of the fauna, are relatively poorly known. Little has been published on the subject in recent years, older reports are widely scattered throughout the zoological literature and the conclusions of past workers have often been limited by a lack of comparative material. However, a considerable amount of collecting has been done in Ethiopia during the past 10 years and the present work has been undertaken both to document this recent material and as an attempt to summarise the known distribution of Ethiopian species. It is hoped that this review of the literature omits few, if any, records and that any references which may have been overlooked will prove to be of minor importance. The collections of Ethiopian Chiroptera in the British Museum (Natural History), London; the Forschungsinstitut und Natur-Museum Senckenberg, Frankfurt; the Museum Alexander Koenig, Bonn; the Staatliches Museum fiir Naturkunde, Stuttgart; the J. W. Goethe-University, Frankfurt and the Natural History Museum, Addis Ababa have been thoroughly examined. It has not been possible to undertake a similar treatment of material in other collections and, inevitably, some specimens may have been omitted. If this is so, it is to be hoped that the present work will provoke a re-examination of such neglected material and the authors would welcome information concerning additional records. As far as possible, all collecting localities in Ethiopia have been gazetted and this record is supplemented with distribution maps for every species. It is hoped that such information will be of value to subsequent workers engaged tipon much-needed taxonomic revisions, who may be hampered by a limited knowledge of Ethiopia. In addition to localities within Ethiopia itself, it seems instructive to include certain collecting sites lying on or close to the Ethiopian border. Places which

224 M. J. LARGEN, D. KOCK and D. W. YALDEN have been treated in this way are French Somaliland (French Territory of Afars and Issas); Dolo and Jiffa Medir, Somalia; Elolo, Maddo Erelle Wells and Sancurar, Kenya; Gallabat and Kibbish Wells, Sudan. No attempt has been made to provide information for the determination of species. The standard work on this subject, «The mammals of Africa. An identification manual», MEESTER & SETZER (Edits) 1971, is so recently published that such repetition appears unjustified. However, in some cases, brief explanatory notes are provided to elucidate taxonomic uncertainties or recent changes in taxonomic concepts. Most of the recently acquired material, here reported for the first time, has been identified by Mr J. E. HILL of the British Museum (Natural History), whose assistance and advice is gratefully acknowledged. We are also indebted to Dr K. F. KooPMAN of the American Museum of Natural History, New York, for allowing us to include his records of Ethiopian Chiroptera in the museums of the United States and Europe and we thank Dr F. DIETERLEN, Staatliches Museum fur Naturkunde, Stuttgart, and Prof. E. VON LEHMANN, Museum Alexander Koenig, Bonn, for the loan of specimens. Prof. D. STARCK of the J. W. Goethe-University, Frankfurt has kindly allowed us to study the bats collected during his Ethiopia Expedition , which was undertaken with financial support from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. A number of Ethiopian Chiroptera, recently acquired by the Museo Zoologico dell'universita di Firenze, were obtained by Dr M. L. AzzAROLI, Mr E. GRANCHI and Prof. B. LANZA during a visit to the Awash National Park (8-19.VI.1971) financed by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Centro di Studio per la Faunistica ed Ecologia Tropicali del C.N.R. Director: Prof. L. Pardi). A considerable debt is owed to the various individuals who have, in recent years, helped to build up the collections of Ethiopian bats; in particular, Dr J. S. AsH, who is responsible for most of the valuable series of specimens from Gambela, the Didessa River, Lake Abiata and Bahadu. The contributions of Dr R. AsHFORD, Messers M. BoLTON, R. 0. S. CLARKE, T. HAKANSSON, G. NIKOLAus, H. RuPP and Dr P. A. MORRIS are also acknowledged. Finally, thanks are due to Mrs S. E. LARGEN for her secretarial work and other assistance extending over a period of several years. The following abbreviations are used in this work: A.M.N.H. A.N.S.P. The smallest (minor) is a southern species which apparently reaches its northern limits in central Ethiopia; the rather larger E. labiatus is represented by the small nominate race, which is perhaps confined to northern Ethiopia and adjacent Sudan, and by the larger E. l. anurus which extends to the south and west. The largest species, E. gambianus, is, like Micropteropus pu.sillus, a West African element which reaches its eastern limits of distribution in Ethiopia. 3. 8 MAMMALS OF ETHIOPIA. I. CHIROPTERA 227 of Ethiopia seems established but records from further north, in nearly all cases based upon small samples, often of immature or female specimens, are here tentatively referred to E. l. labiatus. Metahara, (1 ex.), 29.XII Nycteris thebaica ssp. B.M.: Didessa River bridge, ( ~ ), 13.Il Note. - The subspecies distribution of N. thebaica is poorly understood and apparently complex. It seems that labiata (of which revoili is a synonym) is widely distributed in western and northern Ethiopia, while thebaica may be found in the vicinity of the Sudanese border. In the eastern part of the country labiata is apparently replaced by a larger form, brockmani (with media as a possible synonym). This confusion results from the fact that new names have often been based upon a very small number of specimens and upon characters, such as colouration and the position of a considerably reduced lower premolar, which are now known to be unreliable. The problem it at present under review (KOOPMAN, in litt.). 2. Nycteris hispida hispida (Schreber, 1775) Vespertilio hispidus ScnREBER, 1775, Sliugethiere 1: 169, 188, pl. 56. Senegal. U.S.N.M.: Filwoha, (1 ex.), 25.X Note. - It seems that this species has not previously been recorded from Ethiopia, although widely distributed in sub-saharan Africa. The two specimens in the Senckenberg Museum, although from similar habitats separated by only 30 km, are markedly different in size. Some charactensttc measurements are (Lake Abaya: Lake Chamo) - forearm 39.1 : 43.1; ear 20.0: 24.5; condylocanine length 13.8: 15.3; upper toothrow 4.9 : 6.0. This size difference perhaps supports KooPMAN's opinion (in HAYMAN & HILL, 1971) that in parts of eastern Africa a smaller form (hispida) appears to co-exist with a larger one (aurita). 3. YALDEN U.S.N.M.: Didessa River bridge, ( 1 ex.), Bulcha Forest, (5 ex.), 3-5.VI.l972, 10.XI Note. - KocK (1969) considered africana Riippell, 1842 to be conspecific with Pipistrellus kuhli (Kuhl, 1819) and a probable prior name for the race fuscatus Thomas, This synonymy cannot be maintained following an examination of the cranial remains of Ri.iPPELL's material, which indicates that africana is a composite. The lectotype (S.M.F. 4306) is found to be Pipistrellus nanus (Peters, 1852) for which africana is, therefore, an earlier name; a former syntype (S.M.F ) has proved to be a specimen of kuhli. In order to avoid the widespread confusion which would result from changing the name of one of the commonest African bats, we recommend that the name africana Riippell, 1842 be suppressed in accordance with Article 23 of the International Rules of Zoological Nomenclature. 5. HEUGLIN (1861a, 1877) writes of several specimens of his ventralis being identified as cestonii upon their arrival at the Stuttgart Museum, but insisted that these were distinct from teniotis. Subsequently, it became apparent that midas and teniotis represent different taxa (DE WINTON, 1901) but ventralis was not re-examined and has since been 18

254 M. J. LARGEN, D. KOCK and D. W. YALDEN generally regarded as a synonym of midas, although not, apparently, by THOMAS (1928). The present study has involved a re-examination of all bats collected by HEDGLIN and now in the Museum fiir Naturkunde, Stuttgart. A single alcohol-preserved specimen with the skull in situ (M.N.S. 982) was found to be labelled «ventralis» but this appears to be the individual identified by JABLONOWSKI ( 1898) as africanus. Its short ears distinguish it from lobata Thomas, 1891 and the large cranial dimensions from fulminans Thomas, The specimen lies close to the lower end of the africanacluster in HARRISON's (1971) scatter diagram and the two would appear to be conspecific. 12. ZOOGEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS OF THE BAT FAUNA OF ETHIOPIA* The present work lists 72 species of Chiroptera from Ethiopia, of which only five appear to be represented by more than one subspecies. For a country of such diverse habitats, the number of species might be considered low, but the figure corresponds well with those for other, comparable regions of Africa (KocK, 1973 ), despite the fact that intensive collecting in Ethiopia has only recently begun. The bat fauna, whose composition is summarised in Table 1, may be considered to represent three main zoogeographical elements. A. The Palaearctic element This element is divisible into two subgroups: 1. Species widely distributed in the African faunal region and represented by subspecies different from those in the Palaearctic. Rhinotophus blasii, Pipistrellus kuhli, Miniopterus schreibersi. 2. Species represented only marginally in the African region by the same subspecies as are found in the Palaearctic. Rhinolophus hipposideros, Plecotus austriacus, Barbastella barbastellus. * In this account the term «Ethiopian» has been deliberately avoided. In order to eliminate confusion, the zoogeographical region usually referred to as Ethiopian is here termed the African region.

MAMMALS OF ETHIOPIA. I. CHIROPTERA 255 B. The Saharo-Sindian element In this group are placed four species which are found in the arid areas of the African, Palaearctic and Oriental faunal regions but cannot readily be assigned to any one of these. Rhinopoma hardwickei, R. muscatellum, T aphozous nudiventris, Asellia tridens. C. The African element The majority of species found in Ethiopia (86%) are essentially African in distribution. A number of subgroups are recognisable: 1. Species found also in the Madagascan region. Eidolon helvum, Rousettus lanosus, T aphozous mauritianus, Hipposideros commersoni, Scotophilus nigrita, S. leucogaster, Otomops martiensseni, T adarida pumila, T. midas, T. condylura, T. acetabulosus. It is of interest that 45% of these species are molossids while the remainder are relatively large forms, which perhaps indicates the correlation between superior powers of flight and the ability to cross water barriers. In addition to these species, it is possible that Nycteris thebaica also reaches the Madagascan region (HAYMAN & HILL, 1971). 2. Species which are widely distributed in Africa but also penetrate into the arid Saharo-Sindian belt and thus reach the southern Palaearctic or even western Oriental regions. Rousettus aegyptiacus, T aphozous perforatus, Rhinolophus clivosus, Triaenops persicus, Pipistrellus rueppelli, T adarida aegyptiaca. 3. Species which are essentially African but also occur as relicts in the non-arid areas of the Palaearctic. Nycteris thebaica, Hipposideros calfer, Nycticeius schlielfeni. 4. Species typical of the arid areas of NE Africa, termed the Somali arid zone. (Because of climatic similarities, this region also harbours most of the species found in the Saharo-Sindian belt). Cardioderma cor, Platymops setiger. A further species, Asellia patrizii, is restricted to the Somali arid zone but, since apparently endemic to Ethiopia, is considered separately. 5. Species typical of the East African highlands. At present this group seems to contain only Hipposideros megalotis since Rousettus lanosus, which is otherwise characteristic of this region, occurs also in Madagascar. 6. Species typical of the Central African lowland forests. Hypsignathus monstrosus, Rousettus angolensis, Hipposideros fuliginosus,? Mimetillus moloneyi, T adarida nanula.

256 M. J. LARGEN, D. KOCK and D. W. YALDEN 7. Species at present considered endemic to Ethiopia. Asellia patrtzzt, Myotis morrisi, M. scotti, Kerivoula eriophora. It may be noted that A. tridens, the only other representative of Asellia, has a Saharo Sindian distribution. Table 1. The zoogeographical composition of the bat fauna of Ethiopia. Zoogeographical category No. of species % of total A. Palaearctic element 1. Widely distributed in the African region 2. Marginally distributed in the African region B. Saharo-Sindian element C. Endemic 8. Unclassified TOTAL ( + 1 endemic) (4.2) The remaining species of bat found in Ethiopia ( 42% of the total) are considered to be too poorly known to be attributed with certainty to any particular geographical region. However, it seems likely that at least some of these may be confined to the savanna areas of East Africa. This brief analysis is sufficient to demonstrate the zoogeographical diversity of the Chiroptera of Ethiopia. Considering the great variety of habitats in this country, the very slight subspecific diversity is, perhaps, surprising and suggests a precise niche selection by bats. However, both this feature and the relatively low percentage of endemic forms is likely to be correlated with the comparative mobility of these flying animals.

MAMMALS OF ETHIOPIA. I. CHIROPTERA 257 CoRBET & YALDEN (1972), utilising the figures of CARPENTER (1935), CARCASSON (1964) and URBAN & BROWN (1971), calculate an endemicity in Ethiopia of approximately 2% of the butterfly fauna and 3.5% amongst birds. They record 11 species of endemic mammal, other than bats and marine forms, of which six are rodents. The addition of two further rodent species, subsequently described by PETTER ( 1972 ), indicates an endemicity of about 9.6% amongst such forms. V. THE HABITAT AND FAUNAL COMPOSITION AT SOME MAJOR COLLECTING SITES Although much remains to be learned of the Ethiopian bat fauna and its distribution, a number of localities, largely as a result of intensive study within the past few years, are considered to be relatively well known. Most new material, here recorded for the first time, has been obtained at these sites. Awash National Park ca 08 54'N 39 55'E A region of semi-desert grassland with areas of Acacia scrub and volcanic rubble, most of which lies between 900m and 1100m, but including Mount Fantalle, a dormant volcano which rises to 1700m. The park includes a major river, the Awash, and its smaller tributary, the Cassam, both of which are fringed by a narrow zone of riverine vegetation with large Acacia or Ficus trees. A feature which undoubtedly has an important influence upon the bat fauna is the presence of numerous lava ' blisters '; hollow mounds originally formed as gas pockets in molten lava, many of which have since perforated to form caves which provide roosts for a large bat population (see also HILL & MoRRIS, 1971; LANZA, 1972). 16 species: Rhinopoma hardwickei sennaariense, Taphozous perforatus haedinus, Nycteris thebaica brockmani, N. h. hispida, Cardioderma cor, Rhinolophus clivosus acrotis, R. hipposideros minimus, Hipposideros c. caffer, H. commersoni marungensis, Asellia t. tridens, A. patrizii, Nycticeius s. schlieffeni, Pipistrellus rusticus marrensis, Miniopterus in flatus africanus, Tadarida p. pumila, T. n. nigeriae. Bahadu A small area of scattered Ficus and shrubs in the open flood-plain of the Awash River, surrounded by semi-desert scrub not greatly different from the Awash National Park but rather more arid and rocky. The relatively small number of bat species, as compared with the Awash Park, may perhaps reflect a paucity of suitable roosting sites.

258 M. J. LARGEN, D. KOCK and D. W. YALDEN 8 species: Epomophorus minor, Coleura afra, Nycteris h. hispida, Cardioderma cor, Triaenops persicus afer, Pipistrellus r. rueppelli, Nycticeius s. schlieffeni, Scotophilus nigrita flavigaster. Sof Omar 06Q54'N 40 48'E 1340m An extensive limestone cave system carved by the Ueb River which here flows underground for a distance of 1.5 km. Outside the cave the steep, rocky sides of the river gorge are covered by dense mixed Acacia/ broad-leaved scrub, while a narrow zone of more luxuriant vegetation fringes the river itself. All bats have been collected at roost in the cave with the exception of Epomophorus, Hipposideros and Triaenops, and the latter probably utilises some unvisited part of the system since large numbers were found flying at dusk near the cave entrance (see also MoNon & MoRTON, 1972). 11 species: Epomophorus minor, Rousettus aegyptiacus, Rhinolophus landeri dobsoni, R. simulator, R. blasii andreinii, R. f. fumigatus, Hipposideros c. caffer, Triaenops persicus afer, Miniopterus inflatus africanus, M. schreibersi arenarius, Otomops m. martiensseni. 1700m A large Rift Valley reservoir formed by the damming of the A wash River and including the former Lake Arairobi. The surrounding area consists of Acacia woodland extensively degraded to provide open farmland. 9 species: Epomophorus minor, Rousettus aegyptiacus, Rhinolophus landeri dobsoni, R. simulator, R. blasii andreinii, Triaenops persicus afer, Laephotis wintoni, Eptesicus s. somalicus, E. capensis. Lake Abiata 07 37'N 38 39'E 1590m A rather strongly alkaline Rift Valley lake with open, heavily-grazed shores surrounded by Acacia woodland. A few scattered Ficus trees border a nearby small river and low cliffs provide caves in which Nycteris roosts. 13 species (Taphozous has been recorded from adjacent Lake Shalla): Epomophorus minor, Rousettus aegyptiacus, T aphozous perforatus haedinus, Nycteris thebaica labiata, Rhinolophus simulator, R. f. fumigatus, Eptesicus s. somalicus, E. capensis, Myotis tricolor, Scotophilus nigrita flavigaster, Tadarida p. pumila, T. condylura, T. ansorgei. Arba Minch 1400m A sprawling town over-looking the isthmus between Lakes Abaya and Chama in the southern Rift Valley. The dominant vegetation in the area is Acacia scrub but the Collufu River, which flows between the two lakes, is fringed by well developed riverine forest with very large Ficus

MAMMALS OF ETHIOPIA. I. CHIROPTERA 259 trees. The lakes themselves, at an altitude of about 1300m, support extensive reed beds at their margins. 11 species: Epomophorus labiatus anurus, Rousettus aegyptiacus, Nycteris h. hispida, Lavia frons, Cardioderma cor, Hipposideros c. caffer, H. ruber centralis, Eptesicus s. somalicus, Miniopterus schreibersi arenarius, Scotophilus nigrita flavigaster, T adarida p. pumila. Bulcha Forest 1800m This collecting site is close to a small river flowing into the east side of Lake Abaya, at the transition zone between riverine forest and Acacia woodland. 9 species: Epomophorus labiatus anurus, E. g. gambianus, Micropteropus pusillus, Rousettus aegyptiacus, Nycteris h. hispida, Rhinolophus landeri dobsoni, Eptesicus s. somalicus, Pipistrellus kuhli fuscatus, Nycticeius hindei. Didessa River bridge 09 02'N 36 09'E 1200m This locality is situated on the edge of the Didessa River gorge at the transition zone between three main habitat types; dense, luxuriant tropical deciduous forest, Combretum /T erminalia woodland, and savanna/ farmland derived from the two. 15 species: Epomophorus g. gambianus, Micropteropus pusillus, Rousettus aegyptiacus leachi, R. angolensis, Nycteris thebaica, N. aethiopica, Rhinolophus clivosus acrotis, R. f. fumigatus, Hipposideros ruber centralis, Eptesicus s. somalicus, E. capensis, Pipistrellus nanus, P. rusticus marrensis, Nycticeius hindei, N. hirundo. 515m Hot, humid, marshy grassland with sorghum and maize plantations bordering the Baro River, and Combretum/Terminalia woodland on the surrounding higher ground. Most specimens have been collected close to a small patch of riverine forest which perhaps serves as a focus for fruit bats. The remarkable richness of the fauna in this area is illustrated not only by the number of bat species but also in other groups which have been studied, including birds, Amphibia and Coleoptera. 27 species: Epomophorus g. gambianus, Micropteropus pusillus, Eidolon helvum, Rousettus aegypiiacus leachi, T aphozous mauritianus, Nycteris h. hispida, N. aethiopica, Lavia frons, Rhinolophus clivosus, R. landeri dobsoni, R. fumigatus exsul, Hipposideros c. caffer, H. ruber centralis, Eptesicus guineensis, E. capensis, Pipistrellus nanus, P. rusticus marrensis, Glauconycteris variegata, Mimetillus moloneyi, Nycticeius s. schlieffeni, N. hirundo, Scotophilus nigrita flavigaster, S. leucogaster, Tadarida p. pumila, T. nanula, T. condylura, T. ansorgei.

MAMMALS OF ETHIOPIA. I. CHIROPTERA 287 VI. GAZETEER OF COLLECTION LOCALITIES The co-ordinates cited in the following gazeteer are based mainly upon the 1: and 1: maps, series GSGS 2465 and 4646, published by the British War Office during the years This series, to a great extent compiled from earlier Italian surveys, is known to include many inaccuracies, but these are the only large-scale maps of Ethiopia at present available and their age is often an advantage when attempting to identify the older place-names mentioned in the zoological literature. A number of older maps and expedition journals have also been consulted, and the gazeteers provided by MoHR (1962) and DAVIS & MISONNE (1964) have been found useful, although the latter, almost inevitably, contains a number of major errors. There remain certain records which it has not been possible to trace; either because a village has subsequently disappeared or because its name has since been changed or, in some cases, because a collector may have used local information which has never appeared on a map. It is possible, however, that some of these localities may later be identified when work on the literature of other mammalian orders is completed. Latitude and longitude are given as accurately as possible for towns and villages. Unless more precise information is available, co-ordinates are given for the approximate centre of lakes, mountain ranges and plains; and for rivers the mouth, or place where the Ethiopian border is crossed, is pin-pointed. Heights in italics are those provided by collectors or for other reasons considered to be relatively accurate; the remaining references to altitude are approximate only. Seventy-two species are listed, of which 12 represent new records for the country: Rousettus angolensis (Bocage, 1898), Taphozous mauritianus E. Geoffroy, 1818, Nycteris hispida hispida (Schreber, 1775), Hipposideros fuliginosus (Temminck, 1853), Eptesicus guineensis (Bocage, 1889), Mimetillus moloneyi (Thomas, 1891), Nycticeius hindei (Thomas, 1901), Nycticeius hirundo (De Winton, 1899), Scotophilus leucogaster (Cretzschmar, 1830), Otomops martiensseni martiensseni (Matschie, 1897), Tadarida condylura (A. Smith, 1833), Tadarida nanula (J. A. Allen, 1917). As far as possible, all collecting localities in Ethiopia have been gazetted and this record is supplemented with distribution maps for every species. Sixty-two of the species recorded from Ethiopia are essentially African in distribution, six of the remainder are Palaearctic forms and four are associated with the arid Saharo-Sindian belt. Only five species appear to be represented by more than one race and only four are potentially endemic to Ethiopia: Asellia patrizii De Beaux, 1931, Myotis scotti Thomas, 1927, Myotis morrisi Hill, 1971, Kerivoula eriophora (Heuglin, 1877). These figures low compared with those for other groups of small mammals and are, presumably, correlated with the comparative mobility of these flying animals. RIASSUNTO La chirotterofauna dell'etiopia annovera attualmente 72 specie, 12 delle quali sono qui ricordate per Ia prima volta come presenti nella regione considerata: Rousettus angolensis (Bocage, 1898 ), Taphozous mauritianus E. Geoffroy, 1818, Nycteris hispida hispida (Schreber, 1775), Hipposideros fuliginosus (Temminck, 1853 ), Eptesicus guineensis (Bocage,

Smith, 1833), Tadarida nanula (].A. Allen, 1917).
