1 VISIONS & FANTASIES A Concerto or Ocarina and Orchestra by Kristoher Maloy Commissioned by the St. Louis School o Music Duration: ca. 22:00 February 2010
2 Notes on Visions and Fantasies For nearly three years now, I have served as an arranger or the St. Louis School o Music, and have very much enjoyed creating small-ensemble arrangements o carols, olk songs, and traditional music or the school s aculty and students to lay. I ve come to look orward to the calls I get every so oten asking or my hel in creating new versions o oular music rom all over the world I ve yet to say no! Last all, the school called me with a secial roosition: A roessional-level concerto, designed to canonize the ocarina as a legitimate solo instrument in a concert setting equal to any other or which concerti are traditionally written. I am thrilled to have been oered the oortunity and challenge o writing such a iece. I knew that I wanted to write a iece that would dislay the technical caabilities and exressive range o the ocarina, but I also wanted to show the broadest range o musical worlds and styles in which the ocarina can lay well. The resulting work, then, is in ive movements, each existing in a very dierent world than any o the others. I very oten ind it helul to think in terms o narrative and imagery when I write, and as I sketched and lanned the iece I began to eel that the ive disarate movements were each a searate antasy, each a new dream in which the soloist imagined being in a antastical new environment and having extraordinary exeriences. The articular vision deicted in each movement ollows in the notes below. First, though, a word o thanks to Heather, our ocarina soloist, or her eorts in learning the solo art to a diicult new work. And a secial thanks to Dennis Yeh o the St. Louis School o Music, who has been my colleague, coyist, rooreader, gracious atron, and erormer and an o my work, without whom this iece would never have come to be. I. Flight The soloist imagines hersel in an ancient lying device, gliding higher and higher over the world. II. The Machine An enormous and dangerous machine grows out o control. The soloist tries everything to sto the breakdown, but every eort tends to backire. III. Prayer The soloist enters a mystical monastery, and begins to hum a chant-like tune. Her song echoes in the cavernous sace, and builds to a moment o siritual transcendence. IV. Rom The soloist sits ato a great lumbering animal and leads it out on the loose. It innocently wrecks everything in its ath until eventually, its ursuers catch u, and unwittingly begin an even more destructive conclusion to their chase. V. Fiery Flourish The soloist imagines hersel a dragon-slaying hero in an ancient, iery realm.
