In anticipation of our coming show, where our members and friends help with stewarding the rings, our program will offer an interactive review of the best stewarding practices and techniques to help us be more efficient stewards. We will especially review the oft confused Owner Handler classes and the OH Group judging process. For newbie s, there will be info on basic procedures and tips for making the ring experience for exhibitors and judges be the best it can be. 2 Judges Selection Committee Please call committee members from the appropriate group to suggest judges for consideration by the selection committee which meets several times during the year. Please remember not everyone suggested can be placed on a panel due to a variety of reasons however club member input is given priority. We do work with our sister cluster clubs and also have a policy not to hire the same judge for the same show 2 years in a row. Since we do share judges with the other cluster clubs, we tend to try to hire judges approved for several groups, if possible, to control expenses through judge sharing. Members provisional for any breeds are also given a priority as well as suggestions from specialty clubs for their supported entries. Member of The American Kennel Club The Atlanta Obedience Club s Speaker for the Wednesday, October 8, 2014 Club meeting will be Dr. Sam Franklin,MS,DVM,PhD,DACVS,DACVSMR, Assistant Professor, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine. Because of the increasing importance of Sports Medicine in the lives of Canines, the Atlanta Obedience Club wanted to give as many people as possible an opportunity to hear Dr. Franklin. So please join us for our meeting in October to hear Dr. Franklin. Dr. Franklin will be speaking on a variety of topics including Arthroscopy, Minimally Invasive Surgery and Sports Medicine. Dr. Franklin is a Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons and a Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is one of the first DACVSMR in the country. 5 Continue the Tradition! Volunteer to Steward! It is a long tradition of the Atlanta kennel Club for our members and friends to steward our Fall Show. That is virtually unheard of in these days for a show the size of ours. I extend a very heartfelt thank you to all of you who have volunteered to steward and made that accomplishment possible. But now it s another year and another dog show and we need your help to extend our string of successes. So again I ask you to volunteer to steward for all or part of the day of our show on October 18. Please help us out and volunteer this year so we can keep the tradition alive. The ring steward is our ambassador of hospitality and good sportsmanship to the exhibitors. For many exhibitors, the ring steward is the only representative of our club that they will meet at our show. I hope many of you will volunteer to steward and help to extend the warm and friendly Atlanta Kennel Club hospitality in which we all take pride. I hope all of you that volunteered last year will do so again this year. We ask our more experienced members to please volunteer again, to help at least part of a day. Your experience will be invaluable as some of our newer members learn their way around the ring. And for our newer members, this is a great way to start getting involved. We need all of you! Please help us staff all of our rings with our own members and friends (you don t have to be a member to steward, bring your neighbors or co-workers, what a way for them to learn about dog shows!) For those of you that are still wavering, remember we will send you a free reserved parking pass AND there will be a free lunch. I m sure you will agree that it s worth at least a few hours of your time to be able to enjoy a gourmet lunch arranged by our own Chuck Milne. Our lunches are now legendary in the dog show world. It sure beats dog show food. I m sure none of you will be able to resist volunteering with these enticements. Now for a personal plea. I know a lot of you are sitting there reading the Digest and thinking I m willing to help but I ll just wait until Jim calls me. Please help me out and go ahead and pick up the phone and call, or fill out the attached form and fax it, or even mail it. Those of you reading the Digest online just go ahead and me now. But whatever you do, even if you insist on waiting for my phone call, please help continue the Atlanta Kennel Club tradition of hospitality and volunteer to steward. We can schedule you around other commitments you may have at the show so don t let that deter you. If you are inexperienced, we ll pair you up with an experienced steward for some OJT... 8 FDA Issues Warning Letters for Unapproved Tear Stain Removers Used in Dogs and Cats August 29, 2014 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is issuing warning letters today to companies manufacturing unapproved animal drugs to remove tear stains in dogs and cats. These products, including Angels Eyes, Angels Glow, Pets Spark, and exported products Glow Groom and Health Glow, have not been reviewed by FDA for safety and effectiveness. These tear stain removers also contain the medically important antibiotic tylosin tartrate, which is not approved for use in dogs or cats, nor for the treatment of conditions associated with tear stains. Tear stain remover products are used to treat tear staining conditions around the eyes of animals, which, in particular, is associated with a condition called epiphora, mostly in cats and dogs. FDA has serious concerns about unapproved animal drugs. Unapproved animal drugs are not reviewed by FDA and may not meet FDA s strict standards for safety and effectiveness. These tear stain drug products may be subject to additional enforcement action should the products continue to be marketed, such as seizure of violative products and/or injunction against the manufacturers and distributors of the violative products
