6 An n o u n c e m e n t s: All-Breed Basics Review & Advanced Conformation Handling Seminars with Laurin Howard Saturday & Sunday, June 28 & 29, 2014 ADOG, 3929 Green Industrial Way, Chamblee, GA Indoors, air-conditioned, and fully matted Saturday: REVIEW OF THE BASICS. This approximately 8-hour seminar reviews the 4 basic handling techniques baiting, stacking, gaiting, and patterns in a systematic and easily understandable way. Questions are encouraged at all times. Only the most advanced handlers do not benefit from this seminar. Handouts included. Sunday: ADVANCED. For advanced students, this approximately 8-hour seminar takes the basic handler to the next level. Laurin builds on the 4 essentials above and adds techniques to increase the handler s skill and to emphasize dog handler teamwork. Handlers learn about highlighting virtues and hiding faults; dress; ring strategy; and training techniques. Each student is videoed at the start and end of the day for viewing by the entire class. Handler criteria for Advanced working spot: Adults who have won at least 2 majors (not necessarily with same dog) and who are comfortable in the ring. Juniors who have won 3 or more Best Junior awards. Anyone in this class must use a well-trained dog. PRIVATE INSTRUCTION: Monday, June 30, for students working in or auditing the seminar(s). Cost: $35 per half hour. ABOUT LAURIN Laurin, who lives near Lexington, Kentucky, began as an owner-handler during the 1970s and loved it so much that she worked her way into professional handling in the early 1980s. She has shown hundreds of dogs, from all 7 groups. Her dogs have won bests in show, specialty bests of breed, and over 100 group wins and placements. Laurin showed her breeder-owner-handled Springer to 13 all-breed bests in show and nearly 50 group firsts so she understands the desire to do it yourself. Laurin emphasizes "personal best" and prioritizes safety, courtesy, and good sportsmanship. Laurin has taught handling since 1980, and teaching is her favorite activity. Her students have become successful ownerhandlers who have finished and specialed their own dogs; several have won bests in show. A few have become professional handlers themselves. Laurin has tutored many successful juniors, including several who have ranked #1 in their breeds, qualified for Eukanuba and Westminster, and made it to the Juniors finals at Westminster. One of her Juniors won the 2006 and 2007 Pedigree Top Junior award; 6 have won groups; and 2 have won all-breed bests in show. GENERAL INFORMATION Working spots: limited to 15 each day. 8 Ju n i o r s: Th e AKC Ju n i o r Sh o w m a n s h i p Fa c e b o o k Pa g e Check it out Juniors and Juniors supporters! AKC EXPANDS THERAPY DOG TITLING PROGRAM New York, NY In an effort to honor the thousands of therapy dog teams that make a difference in the lives of others daily, the American Kennel Club (AKC ) has added four new titles to the popular AKC Therapy Dog TM program. In addition to the AKC Therapy Dog (ThD) title (awarded after 50 visits), the AKC now offers: AKC Therapy Dog Novice (ThDN) Awarded after 10 visits AKC Therapy Dog Advanced (ThDA) Awarded after 100 visits AKC Therapy Dog Excellent (ThDX) Awarded after 200 visits AKC Distinguished Therapy Dog (ThDD) Awarded after 400 visits The AKC heard from many dog owners whose dogs had already earned the ThD title and who wanted additional formal recognition of their ongoing commitment to volunteering to help others. We re pleased to expand the AKC Therapy Dog program as a result of these requests, said Doug Ljungren, Vice President of AKC Sports and Events. We ve also added a way to acknowledge beginning therapy dogs, hoping that this will encourage even more dogs and owners to participate in therapy dog work. Dogs who are registered and approved by recognized therapy dog organizations may apply to earn the AKC Therapy Dog titles, which will be listed on the dog s AKC title record. Any dog, including mixed breeds, can earn AKC Therapy Dog titles as long as the dog is AKC-registered, listed with AKC Canine Partners or enrolled in the Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program. AKC does not train or certify therapy dogs. Applications for the new titles will be accepted beginning June 1 st, with titles awarded beginning July 1 st. To apply for a title or learn more about the AKC Therapy Dog program, visit AKC TO ACKNOWLEDGE TITLES EARNED IN NORTH AMERICA DIVING DOGS EVENTS New York, NY The American Kennel Club (AKC ) will now recognize titles earned by dogs competing in events sanctioned by North America Diving Dogs (NADD), an independent governing body for canine dock diving. NADD offer two types of competition for all dogs -- distance jumping and air retrieve. NADD events are an exciting activity that can be enjoyed by all purebreds and mixed breeds. The AKC is pleased to now be able to acknowledge the achievements of all dogs in this sport, said Doug Ljungren, AKC Vice President of Sports and Events. North America Diving Dogs strives to promote the sport of canine dock diving in a setting that is convenient, safe and enjoyable for all dogs and owners, said Debbie Markwardt, President of NADD. We welcome all dog owners to try out dock diving. We know you ll enjoythe camaraderie and fun! In the distance jumping competition, there are two classes -- Open Class (any size dog welcome) and the Lap Class (for dogs under 16 at the withers). A division title is earned by accumulating five qualifying jumps within one division. There are five divisions ranging from Novice to Elite. After earning the initial division title, dogs can earn Advanced and Excellent level titles by completing additional qualifying jumps. In the Air Retrieve competition, a dog and handler team earns one qualifying grab towards a division title based on their longest grab in the Air Retrieve. Like distance jumping, a division title is earned by accumulating five qualifying grabs within one division, and there are five divisions ranging from Novice to Elite. Additional Advanced and Excellent titles can be earned with additional qualifying grabs. Rules governing NADD events, the complete titling requirements and information about how to sign up to host a NADD event can be found here. (northamericadivingdogs.com) Specifics about the NADD/AKC titling program and the AKC title application form can be found in the AKC Title Recognition Program section of the AKC website, said Debbie Markwardt, President of NADD.

10 HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES AND CO-DEFENDANTS PAY $15.75 MILLION SETTLEMENT TO FELD ENTERTAINMENT ENDING 14 YEARS OF LITIGATION Unprecedented Settlement Brings Total Paid to Parent Company of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to More Than $25 Million Groups Settle with Circus After Federal Court Determined Case Was "Groundless and Unreasonable" VIENNA, Va. - May 15, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), along with their co-defendants, have paid Feld Entertainment, Inc., the parent company of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, $15.75 million to settle cases stemming from a lawsuit they brought against Ringling Bros. over the care of its Asian elephants. This historic settlement payment to Feld Entertainment ends nearly 14 years of litigation between the parties. "We hope this settlement payment, and the various court decisions that found against these animal rights activists and their attorneys, will deter individuals and organizations from bringing frivolous litigation like this in the future," said Kenneth Feld, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Feld Entertainment. "This settlement is a significant milestone for our family-owned business and all the dedicated men and women who care for the Ringling Bros. herd of 42 Asian elephants. We look forward to continuing to set the standard for providing worldclass care for all our animals and producing high quality, family entertainment." HSUS and animal rights groups the Fund for Animals, Animal Welfare Institute, Born Free USA (formerly the Animal Protection Institute), the Wildlife Advocacy Project, the law firm of Meyer, Glitzenstein & Crystal, and several current and former attorneys of that firm, paid the settlement for their involvement in the case brought under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) that the U.S. District Court ruled was "frivolous," "vexatious," and "groundless and unreasonable from its inception." Today's settlement also covers the related Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) case that Feld Entertainment filed against the groups after discovering they had paid a plaintiff for his participation in the original lawsuit and then attempted to conceal those payments. In December 2012, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), a former co-defendant in the case, settled its share of the lawsuits by paying Feld Entertainment $9.3 million. Today's settlement brings the total recovered by Feld Entertainment to more than $25 million in legal fees and expenses, which the company actually spent in defending the ESA case. "After winning 14 years of litigation, Feld Entertainment has been vindicated. This case was a colossal abuse of the justice system in which the animal rights groups and their lawyers apparently believed the ends justified the means. It also marks the first time in U.S. history where a defendant in an Endangered Species Act case was found entitled to recover attorneys' fees against the plaintiffs due to the Court's finding of frivolous, vexatious and unreasonable litigation," said Feld Entertainment's legal counsel in this matter, John Simpson, a partner with Norton Rose Fulbright's Washington, D.C., office. "The total settlement amounts represent recovery of 100 percent of the legal fees Feld Entertainment incurred in defending against the ESA lawsuit." In the original ESA lawsuit, Feld Entertainment discovered the animal rights groups and their lawyers had paid over $190,000 to a former circus employee, Tom Rider, to be a "paid plaintiff." The Court also found that the animal rights groups and their attorneys "sought to conceal the nature, extent and purpose of the payments" during the litigation. Their abuse of the judicial system included the issuance of a false statement under oath by Rider, assisted by his counsel, who the Court found was "the same attorney who was paying him" to participate in the litigation. The Court found in addition to Rider being a "paid plaintiff," that the lawsuit was "frivolous and vexatious."
