2 Dr. Carmen Battaglia s AKC Scent Work The Newest Sport! AKC Scent Work is a sport that mimics the task of working detection dogs to locate a scent and communicate to the handler that the scent has been found. Scent Work is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that is fun, engaging, and that builds and strengthens a foundation of trust between the handler and dog. Who is Dr. Carmen Battaglia? Carmen was given his first dog by his grandfather when he was five years old. That was the beginning of a lifelong fascination with all aspects of dog behavior, breeding, training and showing. He has personally bred and finished several Champions, Select Dogs, Futurity and Maturity winners. Today, he is considered an expert as well as a highly respected AKC judge of more than 40 breeds. By education, (holding the Masters and Doctorate from Florida State University), he is a researcher, lecturer and author. His articles have appeared in the "AKC Gazette", "Dog World", "Dog News", "Canadian Shepherd Journal", "South African Dog Magazine" as well as dog publications in Australia and Ireland. Being very active in the dog world, Dr. Battaglia is a Director of the American Kennel Club and has served as Chairman of such important committees as: National Genetics Committee (German Shepherd Dog Club of America), the American Kennel Club Committee for the Future, the Operations and Planning Committee, as well as the Health and Education Delegates Committee. The AKC called upon his expertise in genetics to create and develop their DNA program. He is also a much-sought-after speaker on this topic for television and radio talk shows. Author of several different books on dog breeding, Dr. Battaglia has gained worldwide recognition, most notably for the program he developed - "Breeding Better Dogs". Popular demand has prompted the creation of a seminar for dog clubs which mirrors his book and a video of this method which has been presented across the country and considered an imperative foundation to any successful breeding program. Webmaster: Jim Macke - jimmacke@comcast.net or Mary Ellen Macke - Maryellen.macke@harrynorman.com, Call or either Mary Ellen or Jim for website questions or help. Do not forget to like us on FACEBOOK! Do you have something to post? Tamara Brower is the Facebook Administrator for the Atlanta Kennel Club, the Peach Blossom Cluster and the Georgia Classic Cluster. tamarabrower@gmail.com Contact Tamara at tamarabrower@gmail.com. Brags: Please send any brags for the Digest to Ginger Aldrich Snofire@aol.com, , P.O. Box 6501, Gainesville GA (usually to be received just prior to the 1st of each month) Juniors: The AKC Junior Showmanship Facebook page: Check it out, Juniors and Juniors supporters! - Also send any Juniors brags or recent wins to the Digest Coordinator Ginger Aldrich - snofire@aol.com for inclusion here. We want to know what is happening out there in the JRs rings! - Dues Past Due! -- Duly due dues are now past due, as the grace period ended on July 1st. If you have forgotten to pay your dues, you are now considered Lapsed. Contact Member Chair Gilda Mallik at Gilndon@Comcast.net as soon as possible to let her know your intent. The original notices were snail mailed in March, and several s were sent and a notice (a very large, red one) was in the Digest last month. We also made a phone call as a reminder. We are sorry to lose anyone, but there is a re-application process unless an appeal is made to the board. Please make this appeal as soon as possible, because you want to stick around to get the Digest that we put so much work into! Ha! 2

3 Rosters: Please do not forget also to check the Atlanta KC Website to check our roster info where it is posted. Many people ask for a roster it is there now and all you need to do is print it off if you want a hard copy it is updated whenever we add new members. You will need your password in order to access the roster. Please contact Jim Macke if you need help. New Members: No New Members for this month, unfortunately! July Meeting Minutes? Nope! Not this time. There are no minutes to publish this time as the Board did not meet in June, ergo the board was not able to approve the May minutes. Please check the website for the posting on the minutes when they become available later this month Seeking Help! The Club is seeking help from any member with experience in either Canine Nosework or other scent type events currently in use such as but not limited to Tracking and Obedience work. We need at least five members with this type of experience to help Atlanta Kennel Club become a Scent Work-approved club, and to host events for this type of title. Thanks in advance! Got Ads For October Shows? Please consider supporting your club and show with an ad; even a 1/4 page would be great! Or, if you know someone who may like to place an ad, brag or a business ad, please share the forms on the next page! Interested? Send your info and anyone who is also interested to Greg Benkiser, our Ad Chair, to follow up! Judges Selection Committee Please call committee members from the appropriate group to suggest judges for consideration by the selection committee which meets several times during the year. Please remember not everyone suggested can be placed on a panel due to a variety of reasons however club member input is given priority. We do work with our sister cluster clubs and also have a policy not to hire the same judge for the same show 2 years in a row. Since we do share judges with the other cluster clubs, we tend to try to hire judges approved for several groups, if possible, to control expenses through judge sharing. Members provisional for any breeds are also given a priority as well as suggestions from specialty clubs for their supported entries. 8 Excerpted from Beyond the Backyard by Denise Fenzi & Whole Dog Journal When your dog is successful, reward your dog with the "two-treat method": Have two cookies in your hand Give your dog one cookie from your hand while your praise enthusiastically. Back up so that you end up farther away from the distraction, so that your dog is likely to run back to you instead of heading to the distraction. Give her a second cookie when she is back with you again. What a deal! Your reward should always be higher value than your distraction. Don't worry if your dog fails. Failure is a natural part of learning. Remain calm and resist the urge to yell "no" or physically move your dog around. Instead, follow this procedure: Go to the distraction. Pick it up. Talk to your dog about it. Admire it together. And then put it back. Go to the same place you were before and ask the dog for the behavior again. If your dog fails again, make the task just a bit easier. For example, you might stand closer to your dog, or move the distraction a bit farther away. Or if you asked for a stay, you might change your duration from five seconds to three seconds. If your dog fails three times in a row, stop. The task is too hard for your dog. Go back to the previous step or find a way to make it easier for your dog. Ask yourself the following questions: Did you use a low enough value of distraction? Are you using a higher value reward? Does your dog KNOW that you have a higher value reward? And this is the big one: are you SURE that your dog knows the base behavior in that environment when no distraction is present? If your dog does not know the command, you can repeat it till the cows come home, but you will not achieve success. Each training session should be 5 minutes long OR LESS. Training should be fun, so don't keep going unless both you and your dog are enjoying it. You can repeat a lesson up to (but no more than) three times in a day. Ten minutes a day is an excellent target. Each training session should focus on one behavior only. If you'd like to work on another behavior, do so in separate training sessions. Each lesson should be repeated until your dog is successful at least 80% of the time. In addition, your dog should be bright and eager to train. If she's not having fun, that training session has not been successful, no matter how well she performed! 8

9 Congratulations to Ann Wallin! It appears that congratulations are in order for Ann Wallin, our AKC Delegate! She has been selected by the Board of the American Kennel Club to fill the recently vacant position of Steven Gladstone, who recently passed during the shows in Australia. Though Steven s passing will be mourned, I cannot help but to feel glad that our Ann Wallin has been promoted to such a high honor! Now, I am reporting this as I get it in from the grapevine, but it seems that the Atlanta Kennel Club is the first ever to have two delegates on the American Kennel Club Board at the same time! I am sure that I can speak for all of us here in the Atlanta Kennel Club by wishing Ann the best of luck, and that I know she will lead her tenure with wisdom and conviction. I cannot say this enough congratulations to our Delegate on such a prestigious appointment! 9
