4 PBHC Takes the Lead! Raises $600 for charitable cause supporting dog fanciers facing life threatening or terminal illness by Gregg G. Kantak PBHC Board Member Each year during the Blue Crab Cluster, Southern Maryland Kennel Club hosts a raffle to benefit Take The Lead ( For anyone unfamiliar with this worthy organization, Take The Lead provides direct services, support and care for people in the sport of purebred dogs who suffer the devastation of life-threatening or terminal illness. This year, in conjunction with its 2016 Summer Specialty and supported entry, PBHC donated a gift basket to the raffle, sponsored by Are-Jay Kennels (Gregg G. Kantak and Richard T. Jackson) and Potomac Animal Wellness Services (PAWS). PBHC s raffle item was among the three highest earning items at the event (over 45 raffle items donated), resulting in over $ raised by PBHC for this worthy cause. The raffle basket was a complete Pet First-Aid Kit, including PBHC s disaster preparedness plan (AKC approved) entitled Basset Owner s Workbook: Welfare, Oversight and Well-being (BOW WOW) -- What your Pet Needs Before, During and After Disasters. The basket included a shoulder bag containing all necessary items to care for your pet, and outlined in BOW WOW, as well as the American Red Cross book Pet First-Aid: Cats & Dogs, and information on sheltering during a disaster, sample fostering policy, a much more. In speaking with the recipient of the raffle basket, she was so thankful to have won a raffle basket that directly met the needs of her dogs and could easily be carried in her car. She will be using the contents and guidelines provided in BOW WOW to duplicate the kit for her home, workplace and RV. While the other raffle items were elaborate and filled with goodies anyone would love art work, wine collections, beach bags, picnic baskets and the like PBHC truly took the lead and provided not only funds for Take The Lead but a valuable item to anyone who has a pet. Major Win!! Franbar s Lady Killer (Frank) was WD/ BOW at the PBHC Specialty under Judge Marjorie Wickerd. Frank is owner-handled by Nancy Corkey and bred by Barbara Folco. Volunteers Make It Happen! A huge Thank You to all our volunteers who helped make our Obedience and Rally Trials a success. I hope I am not missing anyone, but as show chair for the trials, I am grateful for the help of Sally Nist, Amanda Ballew, Devon Merritt, Cathy Thistle, and Melinda Brown for keeping everything on track. And huge thanks to Tracy Holmes for the cute party favors she donated for all trial participants, stewards, and the judge. Many thanks to all members who entered. Madeline
5 Brags From Kuuipo: On June 30th, at the Potomac Basset Hound Club Obedience Trial, GCH Kuuipo's Olives Pimento Perpetual Bliss Halia', RE, BN, was High in Trial while earning a second leg towards a CD title under Judge Nancy Withers. She was an awesome little houndie in spite of less than ideal conditions at the show site. The previous Monday, June 27th, she earned leg #1 towards her title under Judge Don Levison. Bliss was bred by and is owned by Madeline Wilson with Melinda Brown. On June 30, at the Potomac rally trial, GCH Kuuipo's Nui Kau'i Coratina, CD, RE, BN, earned her second leg towards a rally excellent title. She also qualified for rally excellent legs on June 27 under judge Rhea McCafferty, and July 4 under Judge Victoria Brown, to earn her RE. 2Bs is breeder-owner handled by Madeline Wilson, and both are looking forward to competing in the open ring soon! Huge thanks to all the Potomac members and our trophy chair for the awesome prizes and cash the girls won at the Potomac trial! From Amanda Ballew: Ralphie became CH Timing's Right A Christmas Story on Memorial Day. From Barnyard: Indy wins her 28th BISS at the Potomac Basset Hound Club holding the record for top specialty winning Basset Bitch. Indy s daughter, JJ, wins select bitch at the Potomac Basset Hound specialty and Indy,s daughter Penelope wins an award Of merit at the Potomac Basset hound specialty Award Of Merit at the PBHC Specialty All three are owned and loved by Barnyard & Classic Bassets From Fireside: Foxnoir Spice Girl of Fireside (Spice) owned by Ellen Ripper, bred and handled by Cathy Thistle went to the Blue Crab Cluster in Richmond, VA in July. She came home with several nice wins to put her a third of the way toward her breed championship. Spice was shown in the 9-12 month Puppy Class. She won Winner's Bitch and Best of Winners at the Potomac Hound Club show her first day under Judge Peggy Lloyd. Day Two at the PBHC show she earned a Reserve at our Specialty under Judge Marjorie Wickerd. Spice finished up the four-day marathon July 3 at the Tidewater K.C. show going Winner's Bitch under Judge Mary Ann Alston. Spice must have known she was on her own in the ring that day as she won in spite of her owner's handling. Spice is out of CH. Rumbridge Slower Lower of Zen and Saranade's You're the One I Want, CGC Select Bitch at the PBHC Specialty From St. Lo: CH St Lo Barnyard Sunrise Sally RN had a great week at the Richmond Show! She received her second Rally Advanced leg with a score of 93 at the PBHC Rally Trial. Thank you to judge Nancy Withers. Not bad for the St Lo Veteran girl. Sally went on to be Best Veteran in Sweeps, Veteran Sweeps Hound Group 3 at the Potomac Hound Club show. Sally was BOS Veteran in Sweeps and Veteran Bitch 1st at the Potomac Basset Hound Club Specialty. Sally is owned/handled/loved by Isabelle Merritt.
6 Key in that promotion is a firm foundation of knowledge that we own, breed, and exhibit a breed that was specifically and purposefully designed for a function. To Promote the Basset Hound... One Must Know the Basset Hound by Gregg G. Kantak PBHC Board Member determined in January to enlist PBHC BHCA in providing a Seminar at its 2016 Summer Specialty, held during the Blue Crab Cluster/Southern Maryland Kennel Club (SMKC). In its request, the seminar would include ringside mentoring and a hands-on examination. While many clubs and shows charge for seminars, PBHC would provide this event for free. The end result: the highest attended Basset Seminar in BHCA s memory. In fact, the Seminar, ringside and hands-on had to be offered over two days to accommodate the interest and reservations. Greater than half of the reservations were from AKC Judges, most of whom attended Friday s Specialty to observe BHCA-approved, breederjudge Marjorie Wikerd. Saturday s participants included AKC Judges, Basset Hound breeders and PBHC club members, with the Supported Entry judged by Denny Mounce, renowned for her Dachshunds, so fully versed in a wrap-around front. PBHC greatly thanks both judges, who took time out of their judging to ensure the Mentees were able to properly view each class line-up, exhibitor examination, gaiting, and down-and-back judging. Thanks, too, to the BHCAapproved mentors who traveled great distances to ensure proper mentor/mentee ratio. Traditionally performed during the Basset Hound National, the seminar was conducted by Sue Smyth, who oversees Education for BHCA. The seminar includes a 90-minute program with a thorough overview of the Basset Hound Standard, proportion, angulation, structure (e.g., head, ribs, front assemblies, feet, hindquarters) and movement. Participants received a full packet from BHCA, which included its Illustrated Standard, Pocket Guide to the Basset Hound An Aid for Judges, the Official Basset Hound Standard, a copy of the 90-minute seminar presentation and DVD, plus several reference articles. Our sincere thanks to BHCA and Sue Smyth for the priceless information, knowledge sharing, and stewarding of information to aspiring judges and breeders. In soliciting feedback from participants, many referenced an a-ha moment and left with a greater or newly found appreciation for the Basset Hound, its origins, purpose and uniqueness. PBHC sincerely thanks its partner and co-sponsor, SMKC, for its generous donation of a Conference Room and ring for hands-on examination both days. From a personal perspective, and a Basset Hound Breeder of Merit, I left the seminar affirmed in my knowledge of our exceptional breed and its capabilities. Whether exhibiting in conformation, obedience, rally, agility, or field/hunt, we collectively and individually promote the Basset Hound. Key in that promotion is a firm foundation of knowledge that we own, breed, and exhibit a breed that was specifically and purposefully designed for a function. As we dedicate ourselves to promoting the qualities of the Basset Hound, we should also continuously re-dedicate ourselves to education of the Basset Hound s history, structure, and function.
