A warm-up area needs to be included to match what exists now. 4/30/ :40 PM 2 Please note responding on behalf of Lower Island Soccer Association (LISA youth organization of just over 7500 players). This design is missing the ability to play 8aside games. With LISA clubs just voting to play another year of 8aside and other age groups looking for more 8aside options we would need to see 8aside solved to support this proposal. Solutions needed: lines on field; space for goals to move if one side 11 vs 11 and the other two games of 8 vs 8; ability to play more than one game at once - balls would go between all fields such that couldn't use them right now; maintain decent safety distance in ball solution. Need to see warm-up area considered in design. With 2 fields or 4 8aside fields more teams will be seeking warm-up space, want to see it considered in final design otherwise they will warm up where you don't want them. Believe benches are covered which is needed by rules of one league, please use good quality benches, have seen others have to replace too quickly/use ones that don't shield from rain. As mentioned in previous survey need to ensure the historical permit usage is honoured. I see challenges with honouring historical permits while used for softball/baseball because both fields would be used up with softball/baseball meaning you can't honour the original Finlayson permit. Congratulations on the work to date, pleased to see the city trying so hard to achieve two working turf fields and very impressed with the speed of the actions and consultation done to date. Please be sure to consult the nearby residents about the position of the lights since they will be brighter than the current lighting. 4 Some bleacher seating is needed on the north side of the artificial field in order to adequately watch the games that are being played on the western fields. 5 Please consider using turf of quality similar to Oak Bay High school field - easier on knees, less heat retaining and over all healthier than crushed tires. 6 I like how there will be two artificial fields instead of the one massive one that is currently there. Add a 2nd floor to washrooms for event organizers. Please consider natural grass with drainage. 10 Make sure the lights are shielded from above and adhere to the color temperature guidelines for night lighting. Have them set manually with a timer to automatically turn off field instead of two, to allow for a bigger skatepark. There are already a huge variety of sport fields being implemented here, and something that Victoria is seriously lacking in, is skateparks, and big ones. 12 artificial turf is not a good surface for playing baseball on. While I appreciate the attempt to make this part of the park multifunctional it does not take away from the fact that a useable baseball diamond is being removed from this park in favour of a sport most people have never heard of (pickleball). 13 Lack of disc golf, or even a basket round of nine when it had the largest response is truly disappointing 14 Pickleball is the FASTEST growing sport in North America and Victoria has an opportunity to build a facility that can hold tournaments, leagues and get the attention of elite players. 12 courts would be IDEAL 15 Moving the lights from the current Topaz sand based field to the Glasgow or Blanchard fields. As a member of the soccer community that trains on the upper field that will be lost, I would hope the lights could be reused on the other two fields for evening training. The washrooms need to be open when the fields are in use in the winter evenings. Makes no sense... unless these sports are providing 100% of the financing. Even then, this is a public land which should be open to other users. 23 No one is going to want to play baseball on a turf, put effort into making a nice baseball field on grass instead. 24 Look at newer sub surface materials. I think some artificial turf fields are mobing away from rubber pellets due to health risks to plastoc pellets. Although I am not confident that the plastic ones dont have their own problems/risks. 25 I assume the fields will have a section open to the public at all times, even during club time. Their "hub" is also in the perfect location for viewing all fields at once with a concession conveniently and centrally located at the base. 9 13 I would like to comment that putting back to back diamonds can make it more hazardous for spectators when foul balls can be coming from all directions, please ensure the backstops are sufficiently high/built to prevent this from happening as much as possible. I'm not sure what the "community field" is meant to be, as when the fields are in use for either soccer or baseball, it would be dangerous to encourage people who are not participating in those games to be in the area 14 Lack of disc golf, or even a basket round of nine when it had the largest response is truly disappointing 4/23/2018 9:07 AM 4/22/ :48 AM 15 I mentioned the lights in my first comment. 4/21/2018 5:58 PM 16 Given that the skateboard area requires undulation, why not change the optional leash area with the skateboard area for the following reasons: Access easier for elderly especially with walkers/wheelchairs Parking easier for elderly Washrooms closer for elderly Flatter area for elderly Better winter availability for access and with less mud for dogs Uses more compatible for bikers/ skateboarders adjacent to one another Ages more compatible for bikers/skateboarders Less construction costs for both areas/facilities Noise more compatible for both uses 17 I would like to see allowing Any sports access to the grass fields. Also the Glasgow field maybe getting lights. 18 As I currently am involved in at least 4 slo-pitch tournaments a year at this park I agree specifically with the reorientation of the Glasgow field. However, as a licensee for one of the events - the Michael Dunahee Tournament of Hope - this does restrict the space available for beer gardens and food concessions. If there could be some fencing added which would allow a wider area for consumption this would help. Even as it is it's difficult to prevent players and spectators from carrying their drinks from the beer garden to the games they want to watch. 19 I don't see any mention of rugby. Given that Victoria is the home of rugby in Canada, and more capped playels on beth the provincial and national teams have come from Victoria than any other city in Canada, I suggest that rugby should be given an important role in the park. 4/21/2018 1:52 PM 4/21/ :32 AM 4/21/2018 8:47 AM 4/21/2018 8:28 AM 20 Is this really needed? 4/20/2018 9:22 PM 21 I think dogs should not be allowed on the sports fields at all, and this should be enforced by Bylaw Officers. The people who use these fields should not have to play where dogs have peed and pooped. 22 Request possibility of allowing alternate grass field sports such as rugby Provision of lights on Glasgow Field 23 During baseball tournaments, whether competitive or local slowpitch, there are just enough fields for teams to play and still have 2-3 teams sit out until their turn. If we reduce the amount of fields to two then there will be an issue with having too many teams sitting around and waiting or reducing the size of the tournaments which means less revenue for the organizers (especially fundraising ones like the Dunahee) and less play time for the teams. The artificial soccer field is not suitable for a baseball diamond and the ball continues to roll without the friction of live grass, it is harder on the player's bodies because of the hard surface and lack of ability to get their cleats dug for quick turning. 4/20/2018 8:55 PM 4/20/2018 4:16 PM 4/20/2018 1:28 PM 24 I really like the "water bottle filling station" idea: this is great! 4/20/ :44 AM 25 Allow community grass field sports; Rugby. What can will be done that wasn't done then? 39 A third grass fiels for slopitch guaranteeing us the same amount of fields as soccer has. Slopitch uses the fields on average more than soccer. I am currently training to be a BMX professional, and cannot train in Victoria, or Vancouver Island for that matter, during the winter months, and have had to move back to Calgary to go to their indoor park there. If the bowl was covered, and a 4, 5, 6 and 8 ft half pipe was installed, and also covered, it would allow for a wide variety of park/freestyle training for BMX, as well as vert training for skateboarders. With these areas covered and implemented, riders could train year round, and not have to constantly move during the winter months. The lights need to be implemented for late night riding as well. Currently, especially in the Winter months, people cannot ride past about 6pm. This makes it near impossible to have a strict training regimen, especially when a lot of people like myself work during the day to pay the bills. Covered areas, lights, a bowl, and the half pipes mentioned above, would allow for ideal training conditions for all riders. I see lighting has been noted already above, but I wanted to mention it again to ensure that it definitely gets implemented! Grass is best and no needle dropping trees directly over the park area. VicWest park has a skatetool station with a few tools on chains for kids to fix their skateboards. It would be awesome if there were additional tools added as scooters often need 2 allen keys to tighten their wheels, and BMX needs a larger size socket. Signage suggesting helmet use,no smoking and no drinking is also important. Water filling station is AMAZING, but could be hugely advantageous if there were 2 different heights as the one as Vic West is too tall for a lot of the younger kids that try to use it.
