2 THE BARK JOURNAL KAY 9 DOG TRAINING CLUB I Issu e 5 2 Agility Trial Our agility trial will be held in Enid this year on September 25, 26, and 27. It's an indoor horse arena located at the Garfield County Fairgrounds at 111 Purdue, Enid. Follow US 412 to Enid. Turn right onto US 81 (Van Buren) and travel north about 3 miles to Purdue Avenue. Turn right onto Purdue and the Fairgrounds will be Yz mile on your right. The Trial will be held in the southeast corner of the Expo Center Pavilion. Judging starts at 1:00 PM on Friday and 8:00 Am Saturday and Sunday. Entries close on September 11at 5:00 PM. Find forms at Concessions are available on Saturday and Sunday. Activities for You and Your Dog Speak doglish! Muffins - Slang for the pompoms left on the hips of a Poodle's shaved hindquarters in the Continental clip favored in conformation dog shows. Make it! Chicken Jerky Ingredients 2 to 4 chicken breasts Directions *Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. *Remove any excess fat from the chicken. Turn the chicken breast on its side and use a paring knife to slice the chicken breast into 1/8 inch thick strips. *Set the strips on a baking sheet. Bake for 2 hours. *Check the chicken before removing from the oven. It should be dry and hard, not soft or chewy. Allow the chicken to cool completely before serving. *Store the jerky in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.,.

" A simple game of fetch can be all that is needed for your dog's daily exercise fix. Fetch is easy to squeeze into busy schedules, as there is no need to travel far to fit in a game. A close-by park or backyard works great and on rainy days, fetch can be an indoor sport, played from the comfort of your couch. Have Fun! September-Take a hike. Before you hit the tra"ils, there are a few tnings to remember. Most parks require dogs to be on a leash at all times, and many trails don't allow pets at au. Make sure to do research on your nearby hiking trail to ensure they have pet-friendly trails and hikes. Bring doggy bags to discard waste s'ince many parks don't have them on-site. ln addition, bring plenty or water and snacks for your pet so they don't overheat or get too tiredo October - Make a Halloween costume for your dog. November- leaf-pile mischief Remember the fun you had as a kid jumping into/running through leaf piles? Lots of dogs enjoy this type of autumnal mayhem, too. For older dogs, a fluffy leaf pile can be a nice bed to relax in. Travel! Sleep inside of a beagle in Cottonwood, Idaho at Dog Bark Park Inn. It is dog friendly. Marilyn Epley-Savannah earned her CGCA. AKC Community Canine is the advanced level of AKCs Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. As with CGC, AKC Community Canine has a to-step test of skills that dogs must pass to earn the official AKC Community Canine title. This isa title that appears on the dog's title record at AKC.

7 THE BARK JOURNAL KAY 9 DOG TRAINING CLUB IIssue 5 7 Got a Nose for Science Researchers from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences recently reported that scent-trained dogs can detect thyroid cancer with incredible accuracy. Their findings were based on a study in which dogs were scent-trained with fresh tissue taken from patients diagnosed with urine samples from patients-some with thyroid cancer, some with benign nodules. The dogs' detection of thyroid cancer matched surgical pathology diagnoses in 30 of 34 cases, or 88.2% accuracy.a news story that just came out of England provides an excellent example: Britain's National Health Service is now looking into how dogs can be used to detect prostate cancer by sniffing urine. A study in Italy last year first brought up the possibility when two trained dogs turned out to have a 98% accuracy rate in telling the difference between urine samples from men with prostate cancer and men without. ~ ~~ =-...
