2 Foreword: I have been a writer for most of my life, but a pet lover for the entirety. Pets were my passion at a very young age, and later, writing about them and talking on radio and TV about pets became my career. We know that children who grow up with pets from a very young age are better for it, even physically better. According to several studies, allergies and other illnesses are less likely to occur with early exposure to companion animals. Pets teach children responsibility, kindness and empathy. And pets are great companionship and fun to be around. Pets also teach children (and arguably adults) many life lessons. We can repay our pets for enriching our lives by bettering theirs. That is why it is important to instruct the next generation of pet lovers with a firm foundation in their care. I am delighted to join Essentials PetCare in their initiative to educate children about the importance of responsible pet care. This book is dedicated to Dr. Donna Alexander, a Chicago veterinarian who spent her career helping to keep animals and people safe, and Dr. Moises Heiblum, a veterinary behaviorist in Mexico City who was dedicated to teaching others and sharing his knowledge with students. About Steve Dale, CABC Steve Dale, a certified animal behavior consultant, has been a pet writer for over three decades. In addition to writing, Steve also hosts nationally syndicated radio shows, and is heard on WGN Radio Chicago. He s authored and contributed to many pet books and speaks about animal behavior around the world. Steve was awarded the Pet Journalist of the Year in 2017, is a recipient of the American Veterinary Medical Association Humane Award and many other honors including being inducted into the Dog Writer s Association of America Hall of Fame.
