2 General Information Dear Friends and Fellow Cattlemen, You are personally invited to attend our production sale on Saturday, March 24 at the Janssen Voss Angus Sale Facility in rural Earlham. We will be selling 27 bulls and 10 females 20 of our own bulls and 7 from friend and fellow Charolais breeder, Marty Lewis of ML Lewis Charolais who we have invited to be part of the sale. This sale has been many years in the making. Previously, bulls have been sold private treaty off the farm as I ve been growing my herd. Looking forward to the future, we decided this was the year to have a sale. We are getting started with a smaller offering but know the numbers would continue to grow with key herd expansion opportunities we ve taken advantage of in the last few years. The bulls are selected for phenotype, growth, calving ease, and disposition. They are the result of investing in quality females, a strong AI program, flushing and purchasing embryos from donor cows and matings that will excel, and using high caliber herd bulls. You will see fall bulls that are largely a result of a fall ET program. The spring yearlings come from the mostly purebred herd. It also seemed appropriate to use this opportunity to start selling some females too. This year is the first year anything from the replacement pen has left the farm. An open heifer was sold at the Iowa Beef Expo and 3 bred females were sold as part of the Adair County Cattlemen s Heifer Project to help a young cattlewoman start her herd (a girl after my own heart). You have the next opportunity to put some of these genetics to work for you. The bulls and females are available to view at the farm any time prior to the sale. A video of each lot will be posted on the Shepherd Charolais website and You Tube approximately 2 weeks prior to the sale. They will be on display at the sale facility starting Friday before the sale. Come early the day before the sale or on sale day to look at the animals, enjoy lunch on us, and stay for the sale at 1:00 PM. Charolais Friends, Welcome to what will be the first of many Sara Shepherd Charolais Sales! Nothing is better for the Charolais breed than watching these young Charolais breeders grab the bull by the horns and develop their own breeding herds! Sara Shepherd is not new to the Charolais world, but has been involved with the breed her entire life, at first watching and working with her family. In 2012 Sara s father, Everett, found it necessary to disperse the EJ Shepherd Charolais herd, which was met with great success! Sara bought a few females out of that dispersal to add to a few she already showed and owned and went off to find her own way in the business. This will not be a large sale, but Sara wants to get started with an auction and build it up as she goes along. Twenty bulls was really not enough to excite larger commercial bull buyers, so she has invited her good friends the Lewis family to also sell a few bulls. Sara will also be selling a small cross-section of her females to give you a great idea of the quality of her maternal herd that will be producing the bulls that sell in the future. He is a proven herd sire that had an adjusted weaning weight of 799 lbs. and an adjusted yearling weight of 1,375 lbs., so expect more pounds from these sons than their fall born weaning weight show. These bulls are out of Sara s can t miss 11 year old M6 Grid Maker donor and the Grid Maker blood is well known for superior production in this breed. Every bull she s produced has been a standout growing up, and she has had all bull calves for her, even flushing. So the Lot 1 bull was one she considered keeping to continue that donor dam s genetic line in this herd until she finally produced a heifer this past year that she will keep to propagate her outstanding genetics.
