Dayton Dog Training Club April AKC Good Sportsman Award Terry McCarty was the latest recipient of this award. Terry has been a long time member of DDTC and has been very active while raising seven children. She says her very understanding husband, Fred, realized that she needed a mom s night out each week and with his support her journey with dogs and DDTC began in Her dogs were a Husky and a Malamute. In 1992 she got her first Sheltie. Since then she has acquired eight, most of whom have their CDs. Her first love, however, is agility in which she competes regularly. She and her dogs have been successful: Laddee, open standard and jumpers, Abbee, excellent standard and jumpers, Kellee, master standard and jumpers, and Adam excellent standard and masters jumpers. Many members were familiar with Sara whom Terry still misses. Sara had a ACD, RN, open standard and excellent jumpers titles. Riley and Annee are currently training at home while her newest dog, Noel, is just beginning her career. Along with raising her family, working as a nurse and training her dogs, Terry has found time to help DDTC in many capacities. She has been an instructor, vacuums the agility floor weekly and is the current agility registrar. You will find her participating in as well as working at our trials. Her enthusiasm for our sport and our club is boundless. As one of our nicest members who has a kind word for everyone, she is more than deserving of this award. Previous recipients: 2015 Richard Eppley Barbara Mann Roberta Shellabarger

Let s protect our turf The Dayton Dog Training Club spent a lot of money and time installing the new turf on the Agility side. However, for several potential reasons, dogs have relieved themselves on the turf surface or have urinated against the poles and owners have failed to clean up the mess. Obviously, this is not good for the turf. The club has provided appropriate clean-up supplies, including a floor cleaner that picks up the liquid and cleans and rinses the spot. Instructions for us are available with the unit. Please protect the turf by cleaning up after your dog! Leaving Crates in the Building We have a large number of members leaving crates in the DDTC Building. If you leave a crate in the building please remember to adhere to Building Rule #7: Having a crate set up in the building is limited to when you are here and may be left up when you are coming on consecutive days or come often. Crates must be clearly labeled with your name on them. Break crates down and put them in the storage room or take them home when you are not there or the evening before floors are cleaned. Currently, most crates are not clearly labeled. Any crate not clearly labeled by May 1 will be removed. Many crates are not used often; some are not used at all and should be taken home. The floors on the Obedience and Rally side are generally vacuumed on Thursday mornings. Please make sure all crates are put away each Wednesday night. Thank you for your cooperation! Meeting Notice The annual membership meeting and election of officers is Friday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. Our Bylaws require that we have a quorum of members present to conduct business, i.e., to vote on matters that require membership approval. The current quorum is 33 members or 20 percent of the total. We had 33 members at the March membership meeting, the bare minimum necessary to vote on anything. Failure to approve essential items can impede club progress, so please plan to attend! Clublicity / April 2017 Page 2

Tick Talk from the Canine Health Foundation Spring brings ticks out in force, and with ticks come diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Erlichiosis, Lyme disease, and Babesiosis transmitted through the bite of these eight-legged pests. The AKC Canine Health Foundation established a tick initiative to study these diseases and find cures. Information about ticks and tick-borne diseases are in the following articles on the CHF website. Lyme Disease. Learn how your investment in the Tick-Borne Disease Initiative is funding a grant that aims to improve prevention and control methods, benefiting both dogs and humans. Tick-Borne Disease: Prevalence, Prevention and Treatment. Read CHF's whitepaper to learn more about ticks, tick-borne diseases, and how to keep your dog safe. Fundraising for Tick-Borne Diseases in Dogs Gets a Boost from AKC. Read about ticks and how tick-borne disease can impact your dog. Your support can help further research in this field, and in 2016, all donations to CHF's Tick-Borne Disease Initiative will be matched by the AKC. Fighting Tick-Borne Disease in Dogs. Read about Felton, who was diagnosed with ehrlichiosis, and how you can make an impact in fighting tick-borne disease. Canine Tick-Borne Disease. Lean about ticks, the diseases they can transmit and how to keep your dog safe. Midwest Dogs at risk of blastomycosis University of Illinois Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Blastomycosis is a fungal disease caused by Blastomyces dermatitidi, an organism found in the soil. Sporting dog, hounds, and other dogs that spend a lot of time sniffing or digging in the soil are more likely to become infected. Dogs get the disease by inhaling microscopic fungal spores that then travel from the lungs throughout the body. Although the disease is not transmitted from dogs to humans, people can get it directly by inhaling the spores. The fungus is most common in sandy acidic soils near fresh water and in areas of high concentrations of decaying organic matter such as wood byproducts and animal feces. Concentrations of the organism occur in the Ohio, Missouri, and Mississippi River valleys and along the middle Atlantic coast. Dogs between the ages of one and five years are most likely to come in contact with the spores. Once the dog inhales the spores, these tiny grains travel throughout the bloodstream and lymphatic system, laying the groundwork for a wide variety of symptoms based on the organ system involved. Clinical signs can include loss of appetite, weight loss, trouble breathing, cough, eye disease, lameness, and sores on the skin. Veterinarians can test for blastomycosis with a urine test and check for lung damage with a chest x-ray, but further diagnostics may be necessary to determine the extent of the infection. Dr. Ian Sprandel, a researcher at the University of Illinois Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, recommends veterinary care and aggressive treatment with anti-fungal medications for disease victims. 4 Brags and Accomplishments Congratulations to all members who have achieved titles and other milestones with their dogs. Rita Drewry is glad that Turbo, her rescued All American dog, got his Mach 2 at the last DDTC agility trial. His name is now MACH 2 Turbo MGA MBJ2. Pamela Murn is proud of her Golden Retriever Rocky (Skyefire's Rocket Dog), for earning his Trick Dog Championship. Rocky earned his Trick Dog championship through Do More With Your Dog. To earn this title we submitted a video showing Rocky doing two coordination exercises, (backing away from me 25 feet and rolling an exercise egg across a 30 foot ring with his front feet); two mouth targets (Rocky carried my purse while heeling, and retrieved his dumbbell); a paw target, (Rocky pushed the easy button on the command "was it easy"?) a nose target (Rocky did multiple hand touches with jumps and at ground level); a scent, exercise (Rocky did the utility scent article exercise); distance work. (Rocky went out to a platform 25 feet away and performed six cued behaviors, sit, down, stand, spin, twirl, and ask (beg); performance of a behavior chain on a single cue (Rocky performed the retrieve over the high jump (jump, pick up dumb bell, return over the jump, sit in front); six behaviors with silent cues (Rocky did the utility signals, heel, stand, wait, down, sit, come, finish right); five best tricks or expert level tricks from the Do More With Your Dog list (Rocky backs away, catches a rope ring and puts it on a pole, backward weaves -- both of us moving backward without hand signals-- and heeling with side passes with Rocky standing behind me). The dog may be rewarded at the completion of the trick, but dog must perform the tricks and movements without treats or lures. Pam is now considering becoming a certified trick dog instructor. Alice Sowder s Whippet Jasper (GCH Rantina's Jasper at Emerald, RN,SC) is the top rally Whippet in the country for Jasper qualified for the National Rally Championship, but unfortunately did not make it in the draw. 5 Linda Yeakle and Bodie Linda Yeakle and Bodie with Judge Katie Maess Mark and Linda Yeakle are celebrating two new titles for Bodie, their Doberman Pinscher. Bodie (Rose's No No Bodie) earned his Rally Excellent title on January 7, 2017, with a second place ribbon. Because Bodie seems to have a mind of his own, it has been an adventure! The same day, Bodie also got a first place ribbon with a score of in Beginner Novice! Hopefully he will continue to watch my bright orange shoes! Thanks to all of Bodie's fans for helping us get this far! Sue Young is proud of Diamond, her Belgian Sheepdog, who finished her Beginner Novice title at Hamilton with a score of 199, first place, and the rosette for High Scoring Optional Titling Classes. Diamond also placed first for her first two legs. Send brags to clublicity@daytondogtraining.com. Don t forget to include your name, dog s call name & registered name if applicable, along with the title or honor achieved. Page 5

AKC program additions and changes Responding to requests for a scent work program, the AKC Board approved a new sport that mimics the task of working detection dogs to locate a scent and communicate its location to the handler. Significant research has been done in developing Scent Work program where the dog uses its sense of smell to locate a target odor such as an essential oil or the scent of the handler. Teams that find all hidden odors within a designated time will qualify. Scent Work is a pass/fail sport with placements awarded for the first through fourth place teams based on time and the fewest number of faults. Teams earn titles when they reach a certain number of qualifying legs. Scent Work will be open to all breeds and Canine Partners as long as the dogs are registered with AKC or listed in the Canine Partners program. The event will be under discussion at the February board meeting and will be open for applications on August 1 for trials held after October 1. For information, go to The Board also approved an AKC Trick Dog titling program. The recommendation includes four levels of titles: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and Performer Trick Dogs. CGC evaluators will be eligible to certify the dog s performance. In addition, AKC will acknowledge titles earned through the Do More with Your Dog (DMWYD) trick dog organization at the dog owner s request. This program will also be discussed at the February board meeting and will launch on May 1. For information, go to Updates to Agility Equipment and Use The Board reviewed several staff recommendations requiring changes in agility equipment for safety and alignment with the FCI agility program. The recommendation included two new jumps to keep the sport fresh and changes in course time for the Premier jumpers with weaves classes. The Premier class launched in October 2015 with initial course times based on testing prior to implementation; however, given the critical nature of course times to the success of the sport, it was prudent to continue to study this after launch. Based on data collected and input from judges, the staff recommended a refinement of the jump heights from three to five groupings in both the Regular and Preferred classes and a slight increase in course times in six out of the ten jump heights. The Premier class changes start on April 1, and the equipment changes must be made by January 2, Stand-alone Preferred Class trials in obedience The Board also voted to allow clubs licensed for obedience to hold trials limited to the Preferred classes without offering the Regular classes. A Preferred class trial includes Preferred Novice, Preferred Open and/or the Preferred Utility classes without the Regular AKC classes. The Non-Regular classes will be allowed to use the Preferred class jump heights in all obedience trials. Clubs still will have the ability to offer the optional or non-regular classes like Beginner Novice and Veterans in addition to the Regular or Preferred class trials. This Regulations change became effective February 1. Clublicity / April 2017 Page 6

AKC introduces big changes in Rally New signs, two new classes, and a new title debut in November AKC has made minor changes to Rally signs and regulations since the sport s inception in 2005 but the first major enhancements for the event were approved by the Board of Directors at the March meeting. Beginning with applications filed in August for trials after November 1, clubs will have the option to add the Intermediate class between Novice and Advanced and a Master class for those who want to seek a Rally championship with their dogs. The Intermediate class is a stepping stone from on-lead to off-lead heeling. Dogs are on leash on a course with signs, including at least three Advanced signs but no jump. The class is open to dogs with an RN but without a leg in the Advanced class. The title earned with three qualifying legs is an RI. Dogs that have achieved an RE title can compete in the Master class to earn qualifying scores towards an RM or Rally Masters title. Teams must earn qualifying scores in 10 trials under two different judges to earn the RM. As with the RAE, teams can continue to compete with each 10 qualifying scores earning an additional RM designation. Master courses have signs with at least three and no more than seven stationary signs. Courses also include at least three Advanced signs, three Excellent signs, and four Masters signs. There are no retries on the Masters course. Mastering the Master class opens the door to the Rally Championship, or RACH. Teams earn a leg with Triple Q performances in Advanced, Excellent, and Masters courses at 10 separate trials. New Signs Six new signs can be used at all class levels: left and right diagonal arrows, left and right loops, and left and right offset serpentines using three cones. Circles are a big deal in the new signs with a spin while heeling in the Masters class, and stations instructing the dog to circle the handler during heeling that can be part of any class but Novice. There s also a Master class sign that requires the dog to halt, then circle the handler in place and return to heel position. Excellent and Master classes can include signs that combine a U-turn and an about turn and two turn signs that have the dog standing instead of sitting. The Master class signs include a recall over a jump, a send-away to a cone, variations on the come front, the double left-about turn, and the three-step back-up, and a 15-foot recall.
