Rally Obedience Rules and Guidelines Introduction/Purpose Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete a course that has been designed by the

Rally judge. In short, Rally is a sport that combines the fast pace of Agility with the exercises of Obedience. The judge instructs the handler to begin. The dog and handler proceed at their own pace through a course of designated stations (8 to 20, depending on the level). Each station has a sign providing instructions regarding the next skill that is to be performed. Scoring is more lenient than that of traditional obedience. The team of dog and handler move continuously at a brisk, but normal pace with the dog under control at the handler s left side. There should be a sense of teamwork between the dog and handler both during the numbered exercises and between the exercise signs; however, perfect heel position is not required. After the judge s Forward order, the team is on its own to complete the entire sequence of numbered signs correctly. Unless otherwise specified in these rules and guidelines, handlers are permitted to talk, praise, encourage, clap their hands, pat their legs, or use any verbal means of encouragement. Multiple commands and/or signals using one or both arms and hands are allowed; the handler s arms need not be maintained in any particular position at any time. The handler may not touch the dog or make any physical corrections. At any time during the performance, loud or harsh commands or intimidating signals will be penalized. Rally promotes fun, enjoyment and teamwork for dogs and handlers at all levels of competition. Dogs That Have Previously Been Trained A youth in their first year of training with a dog that has previously been trained through Novice Obedience in 4-H must start at Rally Novice. A youth in their first year of training with a dog that has previously been trained through Open Obedience in 4-H must enter Rally no lower than Pre- Advanced. Earning Rally Obedience Titles Outside of 4-H Any dog earning a Rally title outside of 4-H must compete in the level above if the title is earned on or before April 1 of the current 4-H year (i.e., a dog with an AKC Rally Novice title may not compete in 4- H Pre-Novice or Novice Rally). If a title is earned on April 2nd or later of the current 4-H year, the dog may remain in the 4-H Rally Level for the remainder of the 4-H year. Any dog that has earned a leg towards their Rally Novice Title, or equivalent, will be ineligible for 4-H Pre-Novice regardless of the date the leg was earned. Any dog that has earned a leg towards their Rally Advanced Title, or equivalent, will be ineligible for Pre-Advanced regardless of the date the leg was earned. Any dog that has earned a leg towards its Rally Excellent Title, or equivalent, must compete in 4-H Rally Excellent. Leashes/Leads The leash shall be six feet long and made of leather, nylon or cotton webbing. All dogs must be kept on leash except when in the Rally ring. Dogs must be taken in and out of the ring on leash. Dogs must be kept on leash in the ring when brought in to receive awards. In Rally Pre- Advanced, Advanced, and Excellent the leash shall be left on the judge s table upon entering the ring. Collars Dogs in the Rally Obedience ring must wear either a well-fitting, plain buckle collar or a traditional slip collar unless otherwise noted. There should be no objects/tags hanging from the collar. Fancy collars, spiked collars, special training collars or collars which are too tight or too loose are not permitted. Familiarization

A walk-through is allowed for handlers without their dogs prior to the start of each class. If needed, the judge may split the class for the walk-through. The judge must be available in the ring during this period to answer any questions the handlers might have. The judge may also choose to brief the handlers on the course during this period. The course for each class will be posted at the ring prior to the familiarization time. Copies of the course may be given to exhibitors at check-in for the class. Scoring and Ribbons Every exhibitor who completes a class shall receive a ribbon, unless excused or disqualified. The ribbons will be Blue, Red, or white. The following point system shall be used: Blue Ribbon Red Ribbon 49-0 White Ribbon Fouling the Ring A 25-point deduction will be made for any dog fouling the ring. Baiting Food, toys, or training aids of any kind are not allowed in the Rally ring. 4-H Rally Levels Offered The Following Applies to All Levels all levels will use Start and Finish Signs, which are sign numbers 1 & 2 stationary signs are the signs with a halt plus sign 27 signs with an asterisk next to them may be used more than once during the course If this is the handler/dog team's first year competing in Rally, follow the guidelines under each level to determine the team's appropriate Rally starting level. After a handler/dog team's first year of Rally competition: 4-H obedience levels play no part in determining 4-H Rally level after the first year a handler/dog team competes in 4-H Rally. Subsequent Rally levels are determined by the score the handler/dog team received in 4-H Rally competition, or by Rally titles (or legs towards Rally titles) earned outside of 4-H. 11 Nose Work Rules and Guidelines Nose Work is true team sport. The dog must rely on the amazing sense of smell it possess, and trust the handler with it. The handler must trust the dog that they will do their job, and reward them sincerely for a job well done. As there is no placement in this sport, the only competition is for the team to do their best. Scent work of any kind is some of the most difficult of any the dog sports and many things can happen during a test. To PASS is to be celebrated. To Not Pass is not to be taken as a failure in any sense, rather a learning experience for the team to improve, and do better next time. Above all, sportsmanship is to be exercised at all times as friends, and competitors in a sport few dare to try. Classes 1. Beginner The Beginner class is for Dog and Handler Teams that are just starting out. The Teams will search on Boxes containing food. Those with little experience in Nose Work, training only with food in boxes should try this class. 2. Intermediate The Intermediate class is for Dog and Handler Teams that are more advanced in their training but not to level of working without food. The Teams will search for Food hidden on vehicles. Those who have had a PASS in Beginner Nose Work - Boxes should try this class. 3. Advanced The Advanced class is for Dog and Handler Teams that are currently working with no food and only scent. The Teams will be searching Boxes with scent, then Vehicles with scent; they will have to be successful in BOTH to earn a PASS. This level is the most difficult and only the most experienced should try this class. Note - All classes are open to everyone. Teams may challenge a more difficult class, but should be cautious in doing so. The whole idea of the sport is for everyone to enjoy themselves, not see how tough they are. Likewise, entering the same lower level class year after year does not show growth as a dog trainer or a member of 4H. Choose a class that challenges the team, but will not overly frustrate them. General Test Specifications 1. The Test is PASS or NOT PASS. There are no placements in these tests. 2. The Test is timed; the dog/handler team has 3-minutes to identify the target. At the 2:30 mark, the timer will announce loudly 30-SECONDS as warning to the team of the time remaining. If the team has not indicated an ALERT! at the end of the 3-minutes, the timer will announce loudly TIME! 3. The Test is conducted On Leash and any length leash that can be safely handled is permitted. The leash may be of leather, nylon or similar material. No leash made of chain will be allowed during the test. 4. Equipment: a harness, flat buckle collar, or martingale collar will be worn during the test. 5. No choke collars, pinch collars, electronic collars, muzzles, or head halters will be allowed during the actual search. 6. There will be one target which will contain the odor being tested; no deliberate distractions should be included. 7. The Test shall be conducted out of sight of all entered dogs and handlers who have not yet tested. 8. The target shall remain in the same place for all of the dogs participating, except for handlers running a second dog. 9. Once all handlers/dogs have completed the Test, handlers may run a second dog after the target has been moved to a new position.

10. There may be lingering odor in the case of multi-dog tests depending on space limitations. The judge will make the best effort to eliminate or minimize these conditions, but handlers should be aware that the possibility exists. 11. The judge will provide a handler s briefing to review the test and location parameters. 12. A start line will be indicated, and the handler may take up to 10 seconds at the start line before beginning their search. 13. The time starts when the dog s nose crosses the start line. 14. The dog must enter the search area by crossing the start line. 15. The handler and dog may search the area in any pattern as many times as they choose. 16. When the dog indicates the target has been found, the handler will signal the judge by saying ALERT loudly and clearly. 17. Once the judge has confirmed that the alert is correct they will indicate this by saying loudly YES! the handler will then reward the dog, and the dog will PASS. 18. If the alert is not correct, the judge will say loudly NO!, and direct the handler to the correct target for the dog s success, and the handler will reward the dog. In this case the dog will NOT PASS. 19. If the dog fails to alert on the target during the 3-minutes allowed, the judge will direct the handler to the correct target for the dog s success, and the handler will reward the dog. In this case the dog will NOT PASS. 20. The test may be stopped at the discretion of the judge if at any time the judge deems the dog to be under undue stress. 21. The test may be conducted indoors or outdoors as space and weather permit. Target Odor Specifications Beginner and Intermediate Level The odor will be Food in each Test. A food of sufficient odor will be provided for the Test. If are any food allergies or intolerances that may present a danger to the health, and safety of the dog or handler, then a sample of a safe alternative will be provided by the handler. The Judge will inspect the food, and place it as a target for that particular dog. These dog and handler teams will run after all other participants have finished testing. Advanced Level The odor will be Birch in each Test. The Birch will be 3-drops of Essential Birch Oil on the lid of a mason jar, then cotton tipped applicators cut to approximately 1-1 ½ -inches (25-40 mm) in length placed in the jar and left at least overnight. Several of these will then be placed in the appropriate target container for each of the tests. No pairing with food will be used during the Test, only odor will be used. N 36 Beginner Nose Work Boxes The Test requires 12 closed cardboard boxes set up in a pattern of one or two rows with each box set a minimum distance of 48-inches (122 cm) apart from box edge to box edge. One of the boxes will be the target box, which will contain the odor being tested.

All of the other boxes should be reasonably new, and uncontaminated. The handler and dog may pass up and down the rows in any pattern as many times as they choose. Handlers may direct the dog to the boxes, but may not touch the boxes. When the dog indicates the target box the handler should signal the judge by saying ALERT loudly and clearly. Once the judge has confirmed that the alert is correct they will indicate this by saying loudly YES! the handler will then reward the dog, and the dog will PASS. If the alert is not correct, the judge will say loudly NO!, and direct the handler to the correct target for the dog s success, and the handler will reward the dog. In this case the dog will NOT PASS. If the dog fails to alert on the target during the 3-minutes allowed, and the Timer has called TIME! the judge will direct the handler to the correct box for the dog s success, and the handler will reward the dog. In this case the dog will NOT PASS. N 37 Intermediate Nose Work Vehicles The Test requires 3-Vehicles set up in a pattern to allow the dog, and handler team to pass between them, and the Judge to observe the team's performance. One of the vehicles will have the target odor in a magnetic box, which will contain the odor being tested. The handler and dog may pass vehicles in any pattern as many times as they choose. Handlers may direct the dog to the vehicles as needed. When the dog indicates the correct place of the target on the vehicle, the handler should signal the judge by saying ALERT loudly and clearly. N 38 Advanced Nose Work Boxes The Test requires 12 closed cardboard boxes set up in a pattern of one or two rows with each box set a minimum distance of 48-inches (122 cm) apart from box edge to box edge. If the alert is not correct, the judge will say loudly NO!, and direct the handler to the correct

target for the dog s success, and the handler will reward the dog. In this case the dog will NOT PASS. If the dog fails to alert on the target during the 3-minutes allowed, and the Timer has called TIME! the judge will direct the handler to the correct box for the dog s success, and the handler will reward the dog. In this case the dog will NOT PASS. N 39 Advanced Nose Work Vehicles The Test requires 3-Vehicles set up in a pattern to allow the dog, and handler team to pass between them, and the Judge to observe the team's performance. Once the judge has confirmed that the alert is correct they will indicate this by saying loudly YES! the handler will then reward the dog, and the dog will PASS. In this case the dog will NOT PASS.

Agility Rules Safety Rules Because the safety of both dogs and 4-H ers is of paramount importance, the following rules will be enforced. 1. Members must attend at least six (6) classes in agility. Either 4-H classes or those of a recognized training school will be accepted. However, simply working with your dog in the back yard is not accepted. 2. Dogs must be a minimum of 12 months old to begin agility training. It is recommended that larger breeds be at least 18 months old. This is because for most breeds the growth plates in the bones are still developing until the average age of fourteen months even later for large breeds. 3. No dog with a physical or mental condition that would significantly impair their performance may participate. Some examples of these include (but are not limited to) hip dysplasia, disc problems, severely slipped stifles, shoulder problems, overweight, or advancing age. All 4- H ers are strongly encouraged to consult their veterinarian before beginning agility training. 4. Dogs that show signs of aggression toward humans or other dogs will not be permitted to participate. This will be determined by the judge and show committee. 5. Female dogs in season are not permitted to compete at any level. 6. All parents/guardians and members must sign the 4-H Dog Agility Release Form. This form will include a section stating that they have been trained on all pieces of equipment for their particular class level, and they will not attempt any piece of equipment on which they have not been trained, as well as the number of classes they attended. 7. A familiarization period of 8 minutes will be allowed prior to the class. 8. Training aids and treats are not permitted on the course. 9. Examples of pinwheels, serpentines and threadles: Obstacle Performance Requirements

A-Frame The dog must touch the safety zone while ascending the up ramp in the direction designated by the judge, cross over the apex and descend the down ramp, touching the safety contact zone before leaving the obstacle. Pipe Tunnel The dog must enter the opening to the tunnel in the direction designated by the judge and exit the other end of the tunnel. Pause Table The dog must jump onto the table and assume the down or sit position (designated by Judge) for a period of 5 seconds. The judge will count the seconds out loud, commencing when the dog has fully assumed the down position. If the dog leaves the table, or gets up before the 5 seconds are over, the handler will instruct the dog to resume that position. In the beginner and elementary levels, an interrupted count is re-started from the point it was interrupted. In the intermediate, senior and advanced levels, an interrupted count will be restarted from the beginning. Hurdles The dog must jump over the hurdle in the direction designated by the judge, crossing between the hurdle s two supports and over the pole or planks without knocking off the top bar or plank. Dog Walk The dog must touch the safety contact zone while ascending the ramp in the direction designated by the judge, traverse the cross plank, and descend the other ramp, touching the safety contact zone. Tire Jump The dog must jump through the tire in the direction designated by the judge. A dog may touch the tire with its feet. Weave Poles The dog must weave in and out in a continuous motion down the complete line of poles. The dog begins by passing on the right side of the first pole, crossing the line of poles between pole number 1 & 2, then pass the left side of pole number 2, then crossing the line of poles between 2 and 3, and continuing in a sequence down the complete line of poles. A handler/dog team must correct for any missed poles, and fully complete the weaving pattern. Long Jump The dog must jump over the planks without touching them, crossing between the front corner marker poles in the direction designated by the judge, clear the span of the planks and exit between the back corner marker poles. See Saw The dog must touch the safety contact zone while ascending the see saw, cross the plank s pivot point, causing the see saw to tilt to the ground on the other end, and descend the remainder of the plank, touching the safety contact zone before leaving the plank. The plank shall touch the ground prior to the dog leaving the plank. The dog must be in control of the plank. Scoring Standard Faults charged at 5 faults: Wrong Course Taking an obstacle in the wrong order or going the wrong direction over an obstacle (including back-weaving three or more weave poles). All 4 paws of the dog must be committed to an obstacle to be charged with this. On and Off the Table Charged for the first occurrence only. Knocking a Bar Off a Hurdle Applies whether it was the dog, the handler, or the leash that knocked the bar down. Touching the Dog Incidental touches accepted. Missed Contact Zone Yellow zone Bailing Off the See-Saw Before it tips down and touches the ground.

Dog steps on or walks over the Long Jump Tugging on the Leash 5 faults per occurrence, to elimination if it is severe or constant. Outside Help or Interference Such as someone telling the handler which obstacle is next, any commands or cues to the dog etc. 5 faults up to elimination, depending on severity. Handler touching any Obstacle Handler Jumps over the Jump with the Dog Charged for each occurrence Anticipation of Table Count Dog gets off before the judge finished saying the word go. Failure to pick up Leash After a tunnel and before the next obstacle is performed. Major Faults charged at 20 faults: Omitting any Obstacle Includes being told by the judge to omit the obstacle because of the four paw safety rule. It also includes such things as the handler omitting an obstacle by choice or by error, or crossing the finish line before the last obstacle is completed correctly. Three Refusals of a Single Obstacle Uncorrected Improper Entry to Weave Poles Bailing Off the See-Saw Before the dog crosses the pivot point of the plank Bailing Off the Dog Walk Before beginning the descending plank Failure to Correct on Pause Table For any dog who jumps off before the beginning of the word go. Elimination and automatic white ribbon: Constant tugging on the leash Dog who stops working or leaves the ring Dog out of control An extreme amount of outside help An excessive amount of touching the obstacles or the dog Fouling the course. Elimination and no ribbon: Poor sportsmanship including, but not limited to swearing, treating a dog harshly, complaining loudly about judges or other exhibitors, using treats in the ring, failure to omit and go on to the next obstacle when instructed to do so by the judge.

A dog who attacks or threatens to attack a human or another dog. Scoring the Advanced Agility Class Scoring is done as in the senior level class, except that refusals/run-outs will be judged on contact obstacles with a 5-fault penalty per occurrence. A refusal/run-out is defined as: o A significant hesitation before an obstacle. o Turning back on an obstacle after beginning the approach to the obstacle. o Running past the front plane of any contact obstacle to be performed. A refusal is not charged if a dog can still ascend the obstacle, stepping on the contact zone, without turning back to do so. Time Faults: Each class level has a specified time limit within which the course must be completed (standard course time). The timer will time each performance to.01 of a second. Any time beyond this allotted time is considered a time fault, and will be penalized on a 1 fault per one-second basis (or fraction). No bonus points are added for completing the course faster than required. Final Score: Course and time faults (measured to.01 seconds) are added together. The lowest total is the winner. In the case of a tie, the dog with the faster time is the winner. Run-offs should rarely be necessary. If they are required however, both dogs will re-run the entire course again, and the original scores will not be changed.

Prizes Blue, Red or white ribbons will be awarded to all in class. Rosettes will be given to First, Second, Third & Fourth Place in each class. Best Junior will be awarded in Novice and Open Showmanship. High scoring dog in obedience will be awarded. Obstacle Course & Family Pet class will receive participation awards. Nose Work will receive qualifying ribbons No placements
