6 TRIAL PARTICIPATION Eligibility Purebred and mixed breed dogs 6 months of age and older may enter a trial. Dogs must be registered with Wag It Games to be eligible for qualifying scores and placements. Hosts may offer For Exhibition Only which allows unregistered dogs to participate non-competitively. Dogs that exhibit signs of pain, discomfort, bandages, stitches or illness may not participate. Dogs in estrus may not compete or be present on the grounds. Safety First - Dogs under warning in any venue must submit a report for review. Safety First - Dogs that have been banned in any other venue are not eligible for registration. Physically Challenged Dogs Temporary Limitations Dogs with temporary physical conditions may request minor exercise adjustments to accommodate a minor temporary limitation. Example of a minor adjustment request: A request to wave deductions for slightly crooked sits to accommodate a dog recovering from leg surgery that is not in pain, but has not regained full range of motion. On the day of the trial, an Adjustment form shall be presented to the trial secretary as soon as possible to allow the judge time to review and make a determination regarding the request, and notify the handler. The judge will only review requests on the day of the trial. Participants may contact the judge prior to the trial if they have questions; however, information about the specific course to be used and pre-approvals will not be offered. Letters from veterinarians will not be accepted. Approved adjustments will apply to all classes participated on the day of request. Adjustment forms are available in this rule book, on Wag It Games website and from the trial secretary the day of a trial. Permanently Disabled Dogs - Heart Dogs Permanently disabled dogs are eligible to participate in Wag It Games as Heart Dogs. Permanent disabilities may include but are not limited to paralysis, missing limbs, deafness, blindness, arthritis, etc. Example of exercise adjustment request: A request to replace downs with a sit to accommodate a dog with a missing limb. On the day of the trial, a Heart Dog Exercise Adjustment form shall be presented to the trial secretary as soon as possible to allow the judge time to review and make a determination regarding the request, and notify the handler. The judge will only review requests on the day of the trial. Participants may contact the judge prior to the trial if they have questions; however, information about the specific course to be used and pre-approvals will not be offered. Letters from veterinarians will not be accepted. Heart Dogs participate for qualifying scores and titles, but do not compete for placements, as the performance is tailored specifically to the individual dog. Heart Dog Titles include Heart Dog after the title name. Please see the Title Chart for more information. Adjustment forms are available in this rule book, on Wag It Games website and from the trial secretary the day of a trial. Physically Challenged Handlers Motorized scooters, wheel chairs and mobility assistant devices such as walkers and canes are allowed. Any adjustments to exercises for such devices should be requested under the Temporary Limitation or Extraordinaire Handler categories. Temporary Limitations Handlers with temporary physical conditions may submit an Exercise Adjustment form to the judge to request minor adjustments to exercises. 6

7 Example of minor adjustment: A request to wave deductions for making circles larger or taking a small step for pivots to accommodate a handler recovering from hip surgery. On the day of the trial an Adjustment form shall be presented to the trial secretary as soon as possible to allow the judge time to review and make a determination regarding the request, and notify the handler. The judge will only review requests on the day of the trial. Participants may contact the judge prior to the trial if they have questions however information about the specific course to be used and pre-approvals will not be offered. The judge will only review requests on the day of the trial. Participants may contact the judge prior to the trial if they have questions however information about the specific course to be used and pre-approvals will not be offered. Extraordinaire Handlers participate for qualifying scores and titles, but do not compete for placements, as the performance is tailored specifically to the individual dog. Extraordinaire Titles include Extraordinaire after the title name. Please see the Title Chart for more information. Juniors Children 8 years of age and younger may be assisted by the judge calling out supportive information while the team performs. Juniors qualify and place along with other teams. Training Runs Training is always welcome during course performance The handler may turn a performance into a training run at any time to support the dog. Training runs may be planned or be spontaneous during a performance. o The handler is not required to notify the judge. Once the handler utilizes the options offered in a training run, it is considered a non-qualifying performance; however, the handler may continue to train up to the maximum course time. Handlers may attempt any designated course or perform selected exercise stations. Training runs allow the following: o The use of food, touch, praise is allowed. o Toys may be brought into the ring for a planned training run. Toys cannot be thrown and cannot make any sound. Training runs do not earn qualifying scores or placements. Regular Classes Shadow Games Class is considered a regular class. Regular classes have three levels and two divisions. Titles for regular classes are shown in the Title Chart (see back of book). 7

8 Levels Wag It Games has a philosophy that if you have trained for it, you may play it. There is no required level progression. Any, and all levels, may be entered at any time, offering the opportunity to earn titles simultaneously. There are three levels: o Novice, Entry level o Skilled, Intermediate level o Proficient, Advanced level Divisions A The A class is for dogs that have not yet earned any title in class and the level they are entering. B The B class is for dogs that have earned a title in the class and level they are entering. Gymkhana Classes Gymkhana classes include the Points Class and Challenge Class. There are no levels or A/B divisions. All teams take their turns on the same course. Agility, Shadow, Obstacle and Dog Ball, Sniff and Water Gymkhana class qualifying runs are tallied together for Gymkhana titles. Gymkhana titles are shown in the Title Chart. Judge s Class Officiating Judges may participate in classes they are officiating, but they must do so in the separate Judge s Class. The officiating judge performs the same course, under the same rules but is officiated by another judge. This class may be held prior to the briefing, walk-through or first participant. The officiating judge is eligible for qualifying scores towards titles, but is not eligible for placements. SCORING PLACEMENT AND RIBBONS Scoring Teams begin with a score of 100. Deductions are subtracted and Bonus Exercise points are added per the Scoring Guidelines. A final score of 80 or above is required for a qualifying run. Gymkhana classes are point based. Teams that earn the required points within course time earn a qualifying performance. Placement Groupings Ties Each class level is placed separately. A-division participants compete together. B-division participants compete together. Teams finishing with the same time and/or points will be considered ties and be awarded the same placement. Time and/or point requirements are defined in each class description. 8

9 Ribbons A ribbon ceremony will follow each class. Ribbon placements are based on individual class rules. Qualifying score and first through third place ribbons will be awarded for qualifying runs. Additional ribbons and awards may be offered at the discretion of the host. Title ribbons will be awarded to those earning titles. Title requirements are available in the Title Chart. Title Certificates Certificates for titles earned are updated monthly in the Wag It Games member area of the website. Certificates may be downloaded and printed. Title requirements are available in the Title Chart (found on the Wag It Games website). TRIAL DETAILS Course Maps Course maps with the course and exercises indicated will be available for all participants. Leashes and Collars Dogs must enter and leave the ring on leash. The leash may be 4-8 feet long. Leashes may be made of leather, fabric or cord. They may have embellishments such as beading. Retractable leashes are not allowed in the ring or on show grounds. The Novice level is performed with the collar and leash on. The Skilled and Proficient levels are performed with the collar on and the leash removed. The leash may be handed to the judge or placed in a designated location within the ring. Collars may be flat buckle, snap or limited slip (martingale) collars. Harnesses are allowed, but may not be of a design to reduce pulling. Tags may be worn. Training and/or correction collars may not be used. Prohibited collars include, but are not limited to, choke and prong collars. Head halters may not be used. Briefings A judge s briefing will precede each class. Walking the Course A 10-minute walk-through will follow the judge s briefing to allow competitors to become familiar with the course. The judge will be available for questions. Only those handlers entered in the trial may be in the ring during the walk-through. Entering the Ring Teams enter after the previous team has left the ring and the judge welcomes the team to enter. 9

10 Distractions The trial setting is full of smells, sounds and distractions. Exhibitors should prepare their dogs for the trial environment. Minor accommodations, such as turning off music or setting a heating system to not come on during a run, may be offered. Significant accommodations for individual dogs will not be offered. TIMING Timing is recorded in seconds. In the event that there is a timing failure, the team will be offered a choice of accepting the maximum course time or re-running the course at the end of that class. Start Finish The timer or the judge will notify the handler when he/she may begin. There is no required position (ex. sit, down, stand, moving) from which the dog must start, but teams will always begin with the dog located on the handler s left. Timing and scoring will begin as the dog passes the start sign. Timing and scoring conclude as the dog passes the finish sign. Teams may continue and complete the course even if they are disqualified. Teams may be asked to leave the ring when course time has expired. RING SPECIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Shadow Skills Ring Specifications Ring size minimum is 1,200 square feet. Surfaces Trials may be held indoors or outdoors. The ring shall have safe footing and be free of debris and hazards. If the trial is held inside, the flooring must not be slippery. If outdoors, the grass must be short and the ground level. Fence and Gates Rings must be fully fenced. Fencing must be a minimum of 2 feet tall and may be a maximum of 6 inches off the ground. Dog show expandable gates, PVC lattice and snow or mesh fencing are acceptable. Roping is NOT acceptable. Closed Ring Gate Policy Ring gates will be closed during all performances. No dog will enter the ring until previous dog has left the ring and the judge has invited the next handler and dog team into the ring. 10

11 SAFETY AND BEHAVIOR Personal Space Handlers should be observant of their dogs at all times and not put pressure on other dogs by greeting, sniffing or encroaching on another dog s personal space. Aggression In the event the host, officiating judge or official feels that any dog s or handler s behavior threatens the safety of the show grounds, the handler and dog will be directed to leave the show grounds. Unsportsmanlike Behavior Wag It Games are intended to be fun for everyone, handlers and dogs alike. Exhibitors and spectators are expected to display good sportsmanship, and respect and support for each other and their dogs. Any person acting in an unsportsmanlike manner may be asked to leave the grounds. Harsh Corrections Harsh corrections are not allowed in the ring or on the grounds. A harsh correction is one that results in a strong negative response from the dog or offends the sensibility of the judge. In the event harsh corrections are observed and depending on the severity, a warning may be issued or the parties involved may be asked to leave the grounds. Incident Report In the event of an incident, a report will be submitted to Wag It Inc. for review. PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES Entering the Ring Teams may enter the ring only when welcomed by the judge. Starting the Course Teams will always begin with the dog on the handler s left. There is no required position from which the dog must start. Signals/Cues Signals and cues may be verbal commands and/or visible signals. Communication and praise are encouraged throughout the performance. There is no penalty for extra cues. The positions required of the dog may be cued verbally and/or with visual cues. Alternatively, the dog may perform positions automatically without being cued. Rewarding Handlers may not enter the ring with food anywhere except concealed within their pockets. Food rewards may be removed from the pocket and delivered as described below. Prior to Start o Handlers may offer food rewards, touch rewards or briefly play with their dogs prior to passing the start sign. There is no specified position for the dog for rewarding at this time. During the Course Performance 11

12 o Handlers may only offer a food or touch reward at the completion of a stationary exercise as defined below. The handler must come to a complete stop before reaching for food or to touch his/her dog. The dog must remain in the location and designated position while the reward is delivered. After Course Completion o After completion of the Bonus exercise, participants may offer food rewards, touch rewards or briefly play with their dogs. There is no specified position for the dog for rewarding at this time. Food may never be placed onto the floor. Touching the Dog Luring Retries Other than as defined by the guidelines for Rewarding, handlers may not intentionally touch their dogs during the course performance. Intentionally touching the dog other than as outlined in the Rewarding guidelines will result in a nonqualifying score. No appearance of luring is allowed at any time while the team is in the ring. Luring is defined as creating the appearance and or creating the impression that food is being held in order to direct the dog in any way. Handlers may choose to retry individual exercises. A maximum of three retries per exercise are allowed. The team must move on after three retries. A 3-point deduction will be taken for each retry. Any point deductions previously subtracted for that exercise are removed. Retries do not erase non-qualifying performances. A retry is performed with the handler re-approaching the sign and completely performing the exercise. Mulligans Signs One mulligan is available per course. The mulligan offers the handler 1 retry without penalty. The handler must notify the judge prior to using the mulligan. Any point deductions previously subtracted for that exercise are removed. A mulligan may be used to erase a non-qualifying performance of an individual exercise. If a mulligan is called, the handler shall retry the exercise by re-approaching the exercise sign and performing the exercise completely. Mulligans may not be used during the performance of a Bonus exercise. Handlers will begin the exercise within 4 feet of the sign. Exercises will generally be performed with the sign on the handler s right. Turn signs may be placed directly in the team s path and the exercise will be performed with the sign directly in front of them. The judge in the class briefing will explain any variations on the above. Joined Stations Joined stations are stations that combine two signs. The two signs may be performed as if they are one exercise or the team may take a few steps after performing the first exercise and perform the second sign as a separate exercise. When the first sign ends and the second sign begins with the same stationary position, the handler may join the stations by having the dog perform that position only once. Example: Center, Swing, Sit and Sit 90 Pivot Right Sit. The dog s sit at the completion of sign one also counts as the sit at the beginning of sign two. 12

13 Moving When first sign ends with motion and the second begins with motion, the handler may perform them as one exercise with first exercise flowing immediately into the second. Rewarding When the first sign is a stationary exercise, a reward may be given at the completion of that exercise. Course Requirements Two joined station signs will count as two exercises for scoring and course requirements. Bonus Exercises Performing a Bonus sign at the completion of the course offers the handler the opportunity to add points to the total course score. One exercise will be offered from each level and offered points as shown above. Only one Bonus exercise may be attempted. At the Novice level, the handler may choose, or need, to perform the Bonus exercise off leash to execute it correctly. Bonus exercises will be performed with the dog on the side that the dog was working on at the completion of the course. Bonus exercises may not be retried. Mulligans may not be used on Bonus exercises. Bonus Exercise Scoring Full points are awarded for a perfect performance. Partial Bonus points (per the Scoring Guidelines) may be earned for a less than perfect performance. No Bonus points will be awarded if the team has performed a non-qualifying action during the course. Non-qualifying performances of any Bonus will not disqualify the team s course performance. 13

14 POSITION GUIDELINES Center Position The dog is squarely facing the center of the handler. The dog should be within approximately two feet of handler. The position the dog shall be in Sit, Down, Stand as defined in the exercise description. Side Position The dog is considered in Side position when the dog is next to the handler, aligned with both dog and handler facing the same direction. The dog should be within 2 feet of the handler s side. The position of the dog Sit, Down, Stand or in motion is defined by the exercise description or as it applies to heeling between exercises. The exercise description defines which side of the handler the dog must be on. Swing Defined as the dog moving from Center position to Side position. The dog will move from Center towards the handler s side, turn inward towards the handler and step into the Side position. The dog may not cross behind the handler. The handler s feet will remain still while the dog performs the Swing. Heeling Sit Heeling is defined as the dog moving in unison with its handler while in the Side position. The side of the handler that the dog is on is determined by the course s exercise. Defined as the dog in a Sit position with his/her rear on the ground, chest off the floor and front legs in an approximate vertical position. The dog may be sitting squarely or resting on one hip. Down Defined as the dog lying as if at rest on the ground. The dog may be lying with elbows, chest and hips squarely on the floor or on his/her side as in a sleeping position. (Chest to the floor may vary slightly due to the dog s structure.) Stand Defined as the dog standing and stationary for the period of time as defined by the exercise description. Stay Defined as the dog holding its position and location defined by the exercise description. Brief Pause Defined as holding a position for one to three seconds. 14

15 Shadow Skills Class - Novice Level Performance The handler will perform a numbered course within the course time allowed. This class is performed with the dog on leash. Course Time Four minutes Novice Class Requirements Teams begin with a score of 100. Deductions are subtracted and Bonus Exercise points are added per the Scoring Guidelines. A final score of 80 or above is required for a qualifying run. Placements Placements will be based on points. Teams finishing with the same number of points will be considered a tie and be awarded the same placement. Scoring Specific to the Novice Level There are no deductions if the handler needs to adjust the leash due to it becoming entangled in the dog s legs. Leash adjustments may be done as follows. o At the completion of any stationary exercise and prior to moving forward. o Between exercises with the handler stationary. o No deductions are taken if the dog moves during leash adjustments. 15

21 Shadow Points Class Gymkhana Class Performance The handler will choose his/her course earning as many points as possible within the time allowed. This class is performed with the dog off leash. The team begins with the dog on the handler s left side. Each exercise begins with the dog on the side of the handler he/she was on at the completion of the previous exercise. Teams are scored only on the exercise station performances and not between stations. There is no limit to the number of times any exercise may be performed for points. No exercises may be performed back to back. Another exercise must be attempted prior to repeating any exercise. Course Time Two minutes The end of course time will be announced and point accumulations will end. Point Class Requirements Teams must earn a minimum of 90 points to qualify. There is no limit to the number of times any exercise may be used. No exercise may be performed back to back. Exercise Point Values Exercises must be performed without error to earn points. Partial points are not awarded for exercises performed with errors. The handler s feet will remain still from the halt until the dog has performed the Sit. The dog will sit in Side position. N, 2. Sit Down The handler will halt, cue his/her dog to Sit and then Down in Side position. The handler s feet will remain still from the halt until the dog has performed the Down. The dog will sit and then lie down in Side position. The dog should pause briefly while lying down before proceeding forward. N, 3. Sit Stand The handler will halt, cue his/her dog to Sit, then Stand in Side position. The handler may step forward with one foot as a part of his/her cuing the dog to Stand. The dog will sit and then stand in Side position. The dog should pause briefly in the stand before proceeding forward. N, 4. Sit and Switch Change of sides exercise The handler will halt and cue his/her dog to Sit Stay in Side position; then the handler will pass in front of the dog and move into Side position on the opposite side of the dog and pause briefly. Windshield Wipers Sit Change of sides exercise The handler will halt and cue his/her dog to Sit in Side position; then the dog will pass in front of the handler and into the Side position on the opposite side of the handler and Sit again. The dog will come to Center and sit, then swing back into the original Side position and sit. N, 9. As the dog returns to Side position, the team will proceed forward in unison. The handler s feet will remain still from the halt until the dog moves back into the original side position. The dog will sit at Center. After the sit, the dog will perform a Swing to the original side position and without sitting or pausing, move forward in unison with its handler. N, 24. While he/she is turning, the handler will cue the dog to pass behind him/her and move into Side position on the opposite side. 36 S, 17. Wrap Around Turn 180 The handler will perform a 180 turn towards his/her dog while the dog moves around the handler in the opposite direction as its handler. The dog will pass in front of and around its handler, moving in the opposite direction as the handler, until they are back in Side position as the handler completes his/her 180 turn. S, Left Fast The handler and dog will perform a 180 turn to the left and immediately upon completion of the turn, they will proceed forward at a noticeably increased speed until reaching the Normal pace sign. (B) As the dog comes to the handler s side, the handler will cue the dog to perform a 180 turn away from them and (C) they will proceed forward in unison. The handler will take 3 to 5 steps backwards while calling the dog towards him/her. (A) The dog will come towards its handler off set from center. [The dog is basically coming towards the handler as if to take a treat from a hand hanging at the handler s side.] (B) As the dog reaches the handler s side, the dog will perform a 180 turn away from its handler. (C) On completion of the dog s turn, the team will heel forward in unison. S, 25. The handler will then cue the dog to Swing to the original Side position and Lie Down. The handler may take 3 to 5 steps backward while calling the dog to Center. To provide the dog with space to change position at Center, the handler may take 1 step backward when asking the dog to change positions while at Center. The dog will come to Center, down and pause, then Swing to the original Side position, and down and pause until the handler cues the dog to move forward. P, 11. Center Stand Walk Around The handler will stop his/her forward motion, call the dog to Stand at Center and Stay. The handler will then perform a 180 turn around the dog and return to the original Side position and pause briefly. The handler may take 3 to 5 steps backward while calling the dog to Center. 45 P, 13. Flip 270 Left Change of sides exercise The handler will perform a 270 turn to the left while cueing his/her dog to simultaneously perform a 270 turn to the left. As the turn is completed, the handler will move to Side position on the opposite side and proceed forward. The dog will turn away from its handler and perform a 270 turn while its handler simultaneously performs a 270 turn towards it. Call to Forward Flip Front Cross Change of sides exercise (A) The handler will stop his/her forward motion, back up and call the dog towards him/her. (B) As the dog comes to the handler s side, the handler will cue the dog to perform a 180 turn away from them and (C) they will proceed forward in unison. The handler will (D) perform a front cross (both dog and handler perform a 180 turn towards each other) and (E) they proceed forward in unison. The handler will take 3 to 5 steps backwards while calling the dog towards him/her. (A) The dog will come towards its handler offset from Center. (The dog will basically come towards the handler as if to take a treat from a hand hanging at the handler s side.) As the dog reaches the handler s side, it will (B) perform a 180 turn, turning away from the handler and (C) move back into Side position. 46 P, 15. Center Sit Dog Backs Up 180 (Previously called Get Back) The handler will stop his/her forward motion and call the dog to sit at Center (A). The handler will then direct the dog to stand (B), back away from the handler 3 to 5 steps (C) and return to Center (D). The handler will then perform a 180 turn in either direction (E) while cueing the dog to return to the original side position (F) and proceed forward in unison. The handler may take 3 to 5 steps backward while calling the dog to Center. The dog will come to Center and Sit. The dog will then stand, back away from the handler 3-5 steps, return to Center, then back to the original side position as the handler turns and proceeds forward. The handler will back away from his/her dog 3-5 steps (C) and return to Center (D). Upon returning, the handler will perform a 180 turn in either direction (E) while cueing the dog to return to the original Side position (F) and proceed forward in unison. The handler may pause briefly to direct the dog to Sit Stay. The handler may take 3 to 5 steps backward while calling the dog to Center. The dog will come to Center, sit and stay while the handler backs away and returns to the position. Center Push Pull Swing Forward The handler will stop his/her forward motion (A) and call the dog to Center; without pausing, the handler will walk forward 3-5 steps (B), then backwards (C) while cuing the dog to move in unison to maintain the Center position. The handler will then cue the dog to return to the original Side position (D) and proceed forward (E). The handler may take 3 to 5 steps backward while calling the dog to Center. The dog will come to Center and while remaining at Center, will back up and move forward in unison with its handler, then return to the original Side position and proceed forward. The handler will then cue the dog to return to the original Side position (F) and they will proceed forward in unison (G). The handler may take 3 to 5 steps backward while calling the dog to Center. To allow the dog space to change positions, the handler may take 1 step backward when asking the dog to Spin while it is in Center position. The dog will come to Center, pause briefly in a stand, then perform a 360 circle to the right/left and a 360 circle in the opposite direction, then return the original side position before proceeding forward in unison.
