1 City News June 2014 Issue 25 Seven Steps to Clean Water... The DPR Water Treatment Process The citizens of Wichita Falls have been hearing quite a bit about the Direct Potable Reuse Project, also known as the DPR Project, Emergency Reuse Project, Short- Term Reuse Project and Temporary Water Reuse Project. Regardless of the name, the process for treating the water is the same and involves seven steps: 1. After being processed through the waste water treatment plant, the treated reuse water is disinfected and pumped from the River Road Treatment Facility to the Cypress Water Treatment Plant. 2. The reuse water is treated through the Microfiltration units with the latest technology utilized to clean the water. The water flows into a clarifier where it is subjected to a coagulant and then enters the micro-filtration cell where a pump pulls the water through a fiber-filled module. The pores in the fiber are so small that most of the impurities are too large to pass through, removing them before the next step in the purification process. 3. The water is treated through Reverse Osmosis. This is the same technology that large ships use to treat sea water for human consumption, that is used on the space station and that is used in the process to manufacture silicon chips. The process forces the water through a micron (One micron is onethousandth of a millimeter) semi-permeable membrane by way of water pressure, but only allows water molecules to pass through the membrane. Salts and other contaminants cannot pass through the membrane and are flushed away. 4. The MFRO treated reuse water is released into a holding lagoon. 5. The reuse water is blended with raw lake water on a basis. 6. The blended water is then treated through conventional means. Regular raw water from Lake Arrowhead and Lake Kickapoo is treated once through an extensive series of steps that produce safe, clean drinking water. This entails: A. Treatment with Chlorine Dioxide B. Pre-disinfection C. Coagulation D. Softening E. Flocculation F. Sedimentation G. Re-stabilization H. Fluoridation 7. Water is stored and pumped to distribution.

6 When is the best time to find deals on plane tickets? Research has offered the following information to help consumers save travel dollars: Tuesday Afternoon - about two thirds of all airlines start their fare sales late on Monday. Once the airline launches a sale, others join in to stay competitive, kicking off price matching that generally ends by early Tuesday afternoon. The new, cheaper fares are loaded into airlines pricing systems and a ready to purchase by 3 PM (Eastern Time). To get the lowest plane fare, how far in advance should you book a vacation within the United States? One to three months. Airlines typically don t begin lowering prices until about three months before departure; the cheapest fares usually stay available until one month before you re set to go. Wait until two weeks before you fly and you risk getting hit with sky-high fares because airlines assume that only business travelers book tickets on such short notice so they increase fares accordingly. Which Internet browser should you use Information Vacation Time for the lowest-price airfares? Any browser that s different from the one you normally use. Always use a new browser when checking flight prices. That means try, say, Firefox if you usually use Internet Explorer, and vice versa. Cookies (computer files) will record the number of times you ve looked at certain pages. If airlines see that you ve shown an interest in a particular flight, they might raise the fare for you. But if you use a new browser to book (or clear the cookies on the browser normally used) you can be sure that you re being shown the lowest price, since you started with a clean slate. What s the magic phrase to use to get the cheapest rate on a hotel room? Best available. Hotel room prices fluctuate as often as every minute. To ensure you don t pay more than necessary, call the hotel and ask for the best available rate. That s the lowest price that hotel computers will allow for the room. Online booking? Some Internet and travel agencies make it simple to know you re getting the lowest rate. Book through Tingo.com and you will receive a refund if the price drops. Make a reservation at Orbitz. com and you will get money back if someone else purchases the same room through the site for less.
