3 Safety 5 Easy Ways to Prepare Pets If you are like millions of animal owners nationwide, your pet is an important member of your household. Unfortunately, animals are also affected by disaster. The likelihood that you and your animals will survive an emergency such as a fire, flood, or tornado depends largely on emergency planning done today. Here are five easy ways to prepare your pet for an emergency: 1) Identify a shelter: Before disaster hits call your local office of emergency management to see if you will be allowed to evacuate with your pets and that there will be shelters that take people and their pets in your area. And just to be safe, track down a pet-friendly safe place for your family and pets. Most boarding kennels, veterinarians and animal shelters will need your pet s medical records to make sure all vaccinations are current. 2) Pack a pet kit: Take pet food, bottled water, medications, veterinary records, cat litter/pan, manual can opener, food dishes, first aid kit and other supplies with you in case they re not available later. Each pet is unqiue, but each pet needs the basics in case of an emergency. 3) Update your pet s ID: Make sure identification tags are up-to-date and securely fastened to your pet s collar. If possible, attach the address and/or phone number of your evacuation site. If your pet gets lost, his tag is his ticket home. 4) Protect your pet during a disaster: Animals have instincts about severe weather changes and will often isolate themselves if they are afraid. Bringing them inside early can stop them from running away. Even if your dogs and cats normally get along, the anxiety of an emergency situation can cause pets to act irrationally. Understanding what to expect during a disaster is crucial. 5) Keep an eye on your pet after an emergency: The behavior of your pets may change after an emergency. Normally quiet and friendly pets may become aggressive or defensive. Watch animals closely. Leash dogs and place them in a fenced yard with access to shelter and water. Familiar scents and landmarks may be altered and your pet may become confused and lost. Remember to keep taking care of them even after the disaster. Community.Fema.gov

4 Health News Mosquito Season Wichita Falls/Wichita County Health District rd Street Mosquito Pellets Vector Control Request Mosquito Spraying Controlling Mosquitoes at Home: Remove empty containers (buckets, toys, pet dishes). Change outside pet water daily, make sure flower pots have drainage holes. Cut the grass and trim the bushes. Mosquitoes like moist, shady spots. Keep the grass short and rake up fallen leaves. Check the rain gutters. They are often plugged by leaves and debris, water accumulates instead of draining. Clean gutters regularly in the summer, mosquitoes will lay eggs in standing water if allowed to stand for more than a week. Fill in any low-lying areas in the yard that can hold water after a rain with dirt and sod. Keep pool water clean and chlorinated. Drain and cover when not in use. Birdbaths and ponds need fresh water weekly.

5 Health News The Benefits of Sunscreen Sunscreen is an important factor in preventing skin damage, signs of aging and cancer. Sunscreens can be made of two types of ingredients: inorganic particles, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, or organic components, such as herbal extracts or compounds like oxybenzone. The particles in sunscreens provide physical protection against UV rays by blocking or reflecting sunlight. Organic components absorb UV rays and release their energy as heat, providing chemical protection. Many dermatologists say it is optimal to use a combination of both types of sunscreen, those providing chemical protection and those offering physical defenses. You can get that information by looking at the labeling required by the FDA. Most sunscreens today have both types of ingredients. SPF - sun protection factor (SPF) indicates how long a sunscreen protects the skin. Physicians recommend SPF 15 and SPF 30. Higher SPFs may not actually provide longer hours of protection, especially because the cream is usually washed off or absorbed after two hours. People need the volume of one shot glass worth of sunscreen to cover the body and should apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outdoors. Don t forget that lips need sunscreen too; opt for a good lip balm with SPF. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using a broadspectrum sunscreen that protects against UV-A and UV-B rays, and has an SPF of at least 15. People should check the expiration date, because some sunscreen ingredients might degrade over time or develop bacterial growth. It s also recommended that people with oily skin or those who are prone to acne use a water-based sunscreen. And people sensitive to para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) should buy brands that do not contain the compound. The FDA recommends not applying sunscreen on babies younger than 6 months old. Instead, babies should be placed in shady areas or covered with clothing. Surprising Things About Sunscreen Live Science.com City News is Published by the Wichita Falls Public Information Office.
