You ll notice that there are plenty of pedigrees due to the influx of Czech imports. In general, the test results are encouraging, and we hope that this portends highquality breeding stock for the future. Speaking of breeding, the Breeding Committee is pleased to announce availability of two litters. Hilda of Dutchman s Hollow whelped ten healthy pups and they will be available for owners about September 10. Her littermate, Hershey, is due to whelp on August 10th. The test results in this issue also serve as a reminder that the Fall tests are just around the corner. 3 August 2016 BWPGCA E&R FOUNDATION Page 1 Heartland Spring 2016 Test by Rem DeJong The 2016 spring test had fewer entries than most Heartland spring tests in recent memory. On the plus side, we had ample time to look at each dog, finish up by Saturday afternoon, and had ample time for travel home on Sunday. This test marked the last hurrah for test chairs, Kirk and Tracy Dilly. If you follow the club on Facebook, you know that the Dilly family is now occupied with a new addition, Ellie. Born premature, Ellie required lots of care, and we re happy to report that the little girl is thriving and doing great. But with all the home-side duties, they felt it was time to take a break from organizing dog tests. Thanks, Kirk and Tracy. The Heartland Chapter really appreciates your efficient work and wish you much success exposing and training little Ellie. She should be running a pup of her own in Natural Ability in about ten years. We had nine dogs to test this weekend: one Utility Field Test, two Intermediate Hunting Dog Tests, and six Natural Ability Tests. On Friday, had only one group, with ample judging personnel present: Jim Crouse-SR Judge, judges John Pitlo, Greg Hurtig, and Andy Yeast with Tim McCarthy, Kirk Dilly and Dave Read as apprentices. We ran two dogs: Buckingham of Salmon River (referred to as semi-famous by his owner for his role in magazine article) was handled by Ted Coon in a Utility Field Test. This test requires a lot of training and preparation. It s a long test too, so a dog needs endurance to hold up and perform well as the day goes on. Ted has run Buck in UFT before, so they are no strangers to the ordeal. On this day, Buck was not at his best. Buck points plenty of wild birds, but there was no point on this day and no steady-to-wingand-shot. Although the score was disappointing, the preparation and training make for a great hunting duo, and Ted recommends more owners give this test a try. The other dog tested this day was in the Natural Ability Test. Jane Chlapaty ran her Czech import, Argo z Hřibáku. Argo can be a bit of a handful with his exuberance, and Jane is a relatively inexperienced handler, so she cautioned about having to high of expectations. The judges noted that Argo displayed some independence, but other than a 1 in pointing and his low cooperation score, Argo showed a lot of potential. He s a handsome dog with plenty of enthusiasm. Saturday was the big testing day with five NAT dogs and two IHDT entries. Group One was headed up by Senior Judge Jim Crouse with Ken Hurtig and Dave Finley also judging. Dave Read apprenticed. Argo ze Stoprounských vinic, owned by Lucas Wendl was the lone NAT entry. Argo is a solidly built young male with a dark coat. Good natured and showing plenty of enthusiasm, Argo racked up a perfect score of 28 and Prize I. Group I had two IHDT entries. Ivar Od Vavrineckeho Rybnika, owned by Kirk and Tracy Dilly was in an unusual predicament. Kirk explained that Ike had apparently been gored by a buck deer last Fall. The injury had caused some nerve damage and he still had a healing wound. Ike wore a boot to protect the injured leg; the judges elected to run Ike only in the field portion of the test and keep him out of the water to avoid infection. Ike showed plenty of spunk, given his condition. An experienced pheasant dog, Ike would not point the pen-raised birds, but otherwise did well. The second IHDT entry was a newcomer to the club. Monica Redmond ran Fousek Z Sakered Bohdan. Bohdy is a non-club Cesky Fousek, bred by Iva Jean McCurdy. Monica and Bohdy started off their membership in the club in a big way by earning a Prize I in the Intermediate Hunting Dog Test. As a side note, the judges had much discussion over Bohdy s performance because Monica elected to try an optional event,

Given his fine performance with a pheasant, it seemed like it should have been a piece of cake. However, Bohdy chose that event to pretty much bomb it. However, the judges determined that, as an elective event, the drag of furred game did not affect the score. Keep that in mind if you might want to try this optional test yourself sometime Three of the NAT dogs were Blackberry Briar littermates, bred by Dave and Mary Jo Findley. A very sad note was that one expected entry, Benny of Blackberry Briar, owned by Scott Roemhildt of Janesville, Wisconsin was not there. Benny had been stolen from his owner s garage a couple weeks prior to the test. To date, he has not been found. We express our sympathy to Scott and his family over this heart-breaking loss. All the littermates ran in Group 2, where Greg Hurtig served as Senior Judge, along with John Pitlo and Andy Yeast, with Tim McCarthy as apprentice. Of the littermates, Brady, owned by Michael Houge, turned in the best score of 25 and a Prize III. Although her total score was a bit lower, Billa Packa scored a 4 in all areas except for a 0 in pointing and a 3 in cooperation. Pointing pen raised birds can be a problem. Given her sleek coat, owner Jim Hughes won t need to comb any burs out of Billa s fur either. Boyd, owned by Mark Rasmussen may be a bit immature. He had a weak search and affinity for water was a problem. But he s a nice looking dog with a good coat and if he gets lots more exposure, he can be a good hunter. Also judged in Natural Ability Test by Group 2 was Jar z Lovčických tarasů, owned by Craig Kukay. Craig has taken Jar to several Michigan training days and really worked at giving him exposure. Jar did well enough to earn a Prize III. He thoroughly loves the water. His biggest problem was focusing on tracking. Judges noted that he was very difficult to examine. As usual, we topped off the test with a fine dinner at the Farmhouse Restaurant where we read the scores, handed out raffle prizes and conducted Heartland Chapter business. One item was to thank Kirk and Tracy Dilly for their service as test chairs and to welcome Dave Read into the role. A big thank you to all the volunteers who help make the test happen and come off smoothly judges, bird handlers, event planners, lunch servers, raffle organizer, bird procurers and folks who bring their dogs we depend on so many people to make a test go. 6 Page 4 THE GUN DOG SUPREME August 2016 Rocky Mountain Chapter Spring Test 2016 by Anita Andrus On March 19-20, 2016 The Rocky Mountain Griffon Club tested six dogs in the Natural Ability Test, eight in Intermediate Hunting Dog Test and one in Utility Field Test along the Snake River near Jerome, Idaho. On Saturday, three Cesky Fousek (CF) import pups plus Dennis Carlson s German Wirehaired Pointer completed the NAT. Young Zach Ross (WY) handled his dog, Dorka z Podřipské stráně ( Desi ) like a pro and earned a Prize II. Grandfather Glen Lehrer (MT) added that Zach would get his Grulla 20 gauge shotgun as a reward for his and Desi s excellent performance. Mike Vance (MT) with Calina Rokycanská kotlina ( Calina ) had a bit of difficulty on the retrieving and water portion of the test but still earned a Prize III. As Joan Bailey always said, after the NA test it s time for retrieving, retrieving, retrieving. Stan Benes (MT) ran 8 month-old Arka z Červinské ( Arka ) who showed excellent temperament control by performing a very methodical and focused pheasant track for such a young and inexperienced dog. Sadly, she refused to swim that day, having had very little exposure to water due to her age and the long winters in Montana. If Stan does his summer homework, by fall she should be swimming like a fish. Dennis Carlson s Three Devil's Hannah ( Hanna ) excelled with a perfect score and Prize I. Way to go Dennis! Four littermates from Bob and Carolyn Matsuoka s (ID) C of High Desert litter ran their INT test as older hunting dogs (OHDT) due to being over-age. Caesar,

7 August 2016 BWPGCA E&R FOUNDATION Page 5 run by Fred Williams, (WY) performed an energetic 4 search and received a 4 in the pheasant track but had difficulty switching gears and focusing on the duck track so didn t prize. Chaska, owned by Ken Wieman (WA) demonstrated good game drive and earned a Prize III. Chappy handled by Cliff Jaro ( ID) showed she was able to slow down and shift gears on the tracking portions of the test and received a Prize II. Greg Miyauchi (CO) and Corbet had difficulty with pointing as well as the duck track and therefore, no prize. On Sunday two CF imports tested in NAT with both receiving a Prize I for their performance. Congratulations to Roger Fuhrman (ID), who ran Cora z Ceceminskych vinic and Gary Pool (ID) who ran Angie Valllis Baptismi ( Tess ). Anna Artz (CA) and Belle of Cattail Storm tackled the Utility Field Test, and Belle excelled at her field work and most retrieving. She fell short in the track of the duck and couldn t prize but still gave an outstanding effort in a long and difficult test. Many thanks to all the many club members who helped put on the test. It is a huge endeavor especially with a judges seminar and annual meeting in addition to the regular test. Special thanks to Angie McDunn for Friday night dinner and great homemade lunches; to John McDunn for being Field Test Chairman, and Ann and Gary Pool for getting our test birds. 9 August 2016 BWPGCA E&R FOUNDATION Page 7 Northeast Griffon Club Spring 2016 Report by Tina Molt We had a very busy weekend in Winterport,ME. We tested 9 dogs with two judging groups. In group A, judging was Rick Molt, Erik Anderson, Zeb Breuckman (apprentice) and Laurie Connell (apprentice.) The first dog was Big Wings Ammo, an Older Dog Hunting Test entry that was owned and handled by Shawn McMoarn. This guy was an incredible duck dog! Unfortunately, he did not prize due to lack of exposure in the field. The second dog was a Brittany Spaniel, Sky, running in Natural Ability. Sky was owned and handled by Josh Silver. This dog was very energetic and covered ground! She had over 60 birds over her in the fall. Sadly, no point. Our next and last dog in Group A was Brita Eso, a Czech import. She was being run in a modified Older Dog Hunting Test and is owned and handled by Mark Canfield. She was being retested for pointing and tracking a pheasant. The judges had her do a long search in hopes of getting a point. In Group B, we had Jim Crouse, Phil Bennett, and Kevin Jester with Scott Craig as an apprentice. The first dog was Adele od Terlicke hraze-an import from the Czech Republic, owned and handled by Jane McKenna. This NAT ability dog was eager and had drive! She prized with a Prize III. The next dog was Jola od Vavrinecckeho rybnika, another Czech import. She is owned and handled by Jim Nestor. This NAT ability dog had a Prize I. Art Arberli was up next with another imported dog, Lovec od Pitne vody, a.k.a. as "Teddy. This NAT dog had charging drive. He received a Prize I. Our last dog in this group was Kaja od Tyrse- an import from the Czech Republic that is owned and handled by Andy Ogden. This NAT ability was a treat to watch- both handler and dog were quite the working team. They also received a Prize I. The test on Sunday was short. Judging were: Jim Crouse, Rick Molt, Phil Bennett and Zeb Breuckman as apprentice. Our first dog was a Czech import, Aimy od Lesa Borkovniku. This NAT dog was owned and handled by Jeff Beauregard. These two were definitely bonded to one another. They received a Prize I. Our last dog was Flora ze Smilovic owned and handled by Scott Craig/ Laurie Connell. Flora, running as a OHDT, was being retested for a track of a pheasant at the request of the Breeding Committee. She succeeded with a fine track. Our thanks go out to all that helped and participated. Thanks to Scott and Laurie for hosting and running the test. Thanks to Ted and Sandie Silver,for the use of their property- not to mention the Greenes and Bernie Ginn. A big thank-you also to Albie and Linda for their terrific pig roast- always a treat!!! Hats off to the judges- for their time and effort, the bird handlers ( the un-sung heroes) Kurt Soneson, Andy Ogden, Art Arberli and Laurie Connell. There is much planning that goes into our tests...it doesn't happen overnight...every little bit of help goes a long way
