3 TRICK DOG SEMINAR 2018 Ernie at the Trick Dog Seminar Submitted by Sheryl Touchette The pointing dog Content written & Pictures submitted by Frankie (Francine) St. Jacques The Pointing Dog The Sudbury & District Kennel Club recently added the Hunting/Pointer section to the club. This section is dedicated to the owners of pointing dogs wishing to participate in the sport of hunting. The pointing breed of dog is a type of gun dog used to find game. The name comes from the dog s instinct to point; this demonstrates to the hunter the location of desired game. A point is when the dog comes to a complete stop, aiming its muzzle toward game. The pointing breeds were originally used by hunters who netted the game. However, now the pointing breeds are seen as more of being versatile gun dogs. The pointing dog or versatile gun dog was bred to

4 find, point and retrieve game but also to perform other hunting tasks. While specific breeds were developed for specific tasks, the versatile gun dog was developed to be able to perform each of these tasks. According to the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association, the versatility is defined as the dog that is bred and trained to dependably hunt and point, to retrieve on both land and water, and to track wounded game on both land and water. This being said, the pointing dog is one of the most versatile hunting companions you can have. They can be used for duck hunting, any game with feather or fur and can be used for tracking. It is extremely rewarding to train and hunt your own dog. You can train your versatile gun dog as your very own hunting companion or compete in field dog trials or do both! The very first time I had seen a dog go on point, I was mesmerized. As this was the most incredible thing I had ever seen, right there and then, I was hooked. It was an amazing display of instinct, intensity and control. The handler walked up and around the dog, flushed the bird, the bird was shot, the dog was sent off to retrieve and brought the bird back to its handler. In training and hunting, your dog becomes much more than just your companion, as you both now become a team, working together to achieve the same goal. You also cannot ignore the fact that the dogs just love it! It s easy to see the amount of excitement and joy this type of activity brings to your pointing dog. With a pointing dog, you get the best of everything as you can practically hunt for anything. There s no need for a specific dog breed such as for duck, upland or fur hunting individually, just one pointing dog breed that can do it all.
