4 From the UDC President Marsha Sheppard This year seems to have flown by, but I have to thank the current UDC Board of Directors for their tireless work and dedication. They accomplished a lot of work, especially updating the manuals and regulations. Thanks to those members who have gone the extra mile to help UDC move forward. I wish I had more time to dedicate to UDC, but unfortunately at this time I just do not. I know everyone is very busy, but if we want to keep this club growing and moving forward we must have more volunteers. And those volunteers need to be supportive of each other. It's the only way we can keep UDC moving forward for the betterment of our working Dobermans. We have a small group of hard-working board members and non-board members, but we need more. Let's all keep in mind we are doing this for our working Dobermans. If we don't, who will? Please note that I have a new address. If you have ed me at the legacydobermans@msn address, please update your contact list to reflect my new address of legacydobermans@gmail.com I wish everyone a successful year and for those able to attend the National, best of luck. 10 Renal Disease in the Doberman By Leslie Carpenter Treasure Seeker Dobermans Photo by Monica Anthony Although I have owned Dobermans and been an informed breed enthusiast for more than 35 years, I was blindsided in 2013 when my 2-year-old Doberman, purchased as a sport competition prospect, received a diagnosis of chronic renal failure. Chronic renal failure is a progressive disorder in which the kidneys slowly lose the ability to concentrate urine and eliminate wastes. The disease is associated with irreversible changes to the kidney structure, such as scarring and loss of nephrons, the functional units of the kidney. 1 Renal disease can be acquired or inherited. Symptoms and Diagnosis. I had noticed that my young Doberman Lucas had been drinking a lot of water and had been urinating a lot, sometimes waking me in the middle of the night to go outside. As he was a typically boisterous and active young dog that loved to swim and play in the water, I thought that perhaps his water drinking behavior was a play behavior because he was a very driven dog. Although he would occasionally miss a meal, he was otherwise acting normal... very active, attentive, lively and happy. He never soiled in the house, and never dribbled urine. He maintained his weight, and was energetic. I took him in to the veterinarian to be checked out just because the behavior was a little unusual, and I wanted to make sure that everything was okay. At the veterinarian s office, the vet took Lucas s history. They drew some blood and collected some urine to send out to the lab, and told me to expect some answers within 1 Petside.com Renal Failure, Chronic (Canine); 10 UDC Focus Spring 2015

11 48 hours. I received the follow-up call from the veterinarian the following Saturday morning while I was at training. Her fateful words were, Your dog has renal disease. At that time, I hadn t a clue what that really meant. The veterinarian arrived at this diagnosis by examining some key values in a complete blood count (CBC) and a urine panel, along with Lucas s history. As he was not acting sick, and had been drinking a lot of water for a fairly long period of time (several months), we were not dealing with an acute situation but a chronic one. The key compounds in the blood used to diagnose renal failure are BUN (blood urea nitrogen), creatinine and phosphorus. Another compound, amylase, is often above normal in dogs with renal disease. Elevated blood levels of these compounds, in conjunction with an inability of the dog to concentrate his urine, resulting in a low specific gravity of the urine, are indicative of renal failure. Additional symptoms and conditions associated with renal failure, including proteinuria (loss of protein in the Lucas during a training session. Photo courtesy Leslie Carpenter. When acute disease or traumatic conditions have been ruled out in a dog less than two years old who is displaying symptoms of renal failure, Juvenile Renal Disease is strongly suspected by the veterinarian. urine) and high blood pressure. Because the kidney plays such an important role in electrolyte balance and hormone regulation, other serious conditions may emerge during the treatment of the chronic renal patient. The veterinary community uses the standard IRIS (International Renal Interest Society) staging assessment to determine what stage of kidney failure a dog might be in. staging_ckd.shtml. 2 Acute renal failure can be caused by traumatic events such as poisoning or infection. These situations typically present with the dog in obvious distress. If a causative factor for the distress can be discovered and the dog can be treated, it is possible that she can regain kidney function and lead a normal life. When a dog is discovered to be in renal failure, additional diagnostic tests are recommended to rule out infections such as leptospirosis or tick borne diseases, which can cause symptoms of renal failure. An ultrasound can help to identify possible blockages due to urinary stones and other potentially curable causes of kidney failure. When acute disease or traumatic conditions have been ruled out in a dog less than two years old who is displaying symptoms of renal failure, Juvenile Renal Disease is strongly suspected by the veterinarian. 3 This is a general term that can include several abnormalities or disease conditions of the kidneys that can arise from a condition called renal dysplasia, or RD. This is a condition in which the kidney tissue fails to differentiate properly during gestation and the first few weeks of life. The two terms are often used interchangeably. The definitive diagnosis for Juvenile Renal Disease or Renal Dysplasia is by wedge biopsy of the kidney (a surgical procedure that must be done under anesthesia) or by an examination of the kidney tissues by a pathologist after the animal s death. 4 Because the dog s kidneys do such a good job of compensating for damage, a disease condition can go undetected for a long time, and by the time an owner notices the symptoms of water drinking (polydipsia) and excessive urination (polyuria) and the altered blood values are discovered in a complete blood count (CBC), the dog has lost 75-80% or more of the functioning kidney tissue. continued on next page 2 International Renal Interest Society Website 3 Fleischer, Susan, Whiteley, Spring 2015 UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 11

12 Lucas, age 2.5 years, during a practice session. Photo courtesy Leslie Carpenter. Kidney continued from page 11 Unlike some body tissues, kidney tissue once lost is gone forever, so a dog can never heal from chronic renal failure, but sometimes the progression of the disease can be slowed, and the dog will feel better with good management. Chronic renal failure is a progressive disease. Once a dog is diagnosed with chronic renal failure, the owner should work closely with his/her veterinarian to develop an appropriate diet for the dog, based upon blood and urine lab values. Dietary needs will change depending upon the stage of the disease, and additional supportive care such as anti-nausea medications, anti-diarrheal medications, calcium supplementation, phosphorus binders, and blood pressure medicine will likely be needed as the disease progresses. If is not unusual for a dog with chronic renal failure to display signs of kidney infection or inflammation, and it is generally agreed among veterinarians that these infections, while they can and should be treated for the comfort of the dog, are a result of the underlying disease condition of the kidney, and not necessarily a causative factor for the renal insufficiency. When the existing kidney tissue is damaged to the point that the dog can no longer filter toxins from his blood, he will stop eating altogether, because eating makes him nauseous. He will become dehydrated from the vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive urine output that accompanies the toxic condition. With continuous veterinary support, including dialysis, some dogs can live a long time with kidney disease, but such intensive and expensive veterinary care is not usually a realistic option for most Doberman owners. So What About Renal Dysplasia and the Doberman? Renal dysplasia is believed to be caused by a gene mutation that blocks the differentiation of embryonic renal tissue from developing into the mature tissues of the kidney that are required to properly filter the blood of the byproducts of metabolism. Dysplasia can occur in several structures of the kidney. The gene that may be responsible for the disease has been identified by the Canadian researcher Mary Whiteley, Ph.D. 5 Her work has been supported by the American Miniature Schnauzer Club, the American Lhasa Apso Club, and the American Shih Tzu Club. A genetic test for the disease mutation is now available from her company, Dogenes, Inc. A test sample can be collected by cheek cell swab by the owner, and is mailed to the testing center for evaluation. Results are returned within four to six weeks. 6 The inheritance of this disease is believed to be similar to cardiomyopathy in that the mutation is an autosomal dominant gene with incomplete penetrance, which means that unknown environmental factors can affect the expression of the gene. This means that a dog with one copy of the gene may or may not be affected by the disease, but it also means that a dog that is homozygous positive for the gene might not show signs of disease. Having the gene mutation is not a predictor of whether or not the dog will display signs of disease. Unfortunately, as we have found with cardiomyopathy, this type of defect can be passed from generation to 5 Whiteley, Dogenes, Inc. 12 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Spring 2015

13 generation with only an occasional individual displaying signs of disease, while at the same time the frequency of the gene in the breeding population may continue to increase, especially when a carrier is heavily used in a breeding program. According to Whiteley, on average, a dog with one copy of the mutation will pass it on to about half of his or her puppies, but only about 5 percent of dogs with the mutation will be clinically affected with the disease. Dogs may have the mutation and be normal, explains Whiteley. However, when the disease strikes, it's awful. What does this mean to Doberman breeders and enthusiasts? Familial renal disease has been documented in the breed, 7 and an Internet search returns many stories of renal failure in both young and old Dobermans. In much of the literature available on popular pet websites, the Doberman is listed in the top five to seven breeds affected by chronic renal failure. It is possible that some deaths caused by renal failure, especially in very young puppies, are... I believe our members can provide leadership in educating Doberman owners and breeders about this disease by using the test as part of their breeding selection process and making others aware of the disease... undiagnosed. According to Whiteley, the disease condition can be seen in puppies as young as 2 months old. It may also strike a dog later in life, depending upon the percentage of the dysplastic (non-differentiated) cells in the kidney. When a 7 or 8 year old dog is diagnosed with renal failure, it is likely that the veterinarian and owner will view the diagnosis as an isolated event and not correlate the disease to a genetic predisposition to the disease. 8 9 At the present time, we do not know the frequency of the gene mutation in the existing Doberman population, and there is not clear agreement in the scientific community that the mutation is actually responsible for causing disease in Dobermans.10 Further research is needed and will require cooperation from Doberman breeders and owners. Most importantly, the ability to test for the disease does not mean that it should be used as a single deciding factor in whether to use a particular dog for breeding or not. All of a dog s traits must be considered when making a breeding decision, and a dog that offers a lot of good things to the breed can continue to be used selectively. If a dog is discovered to be a carrier for RD and that information is used to breed selectively against RD, an RD free status in the progeny can be achieved within two generations. Research on renal disease in dogs has been ongoing for many years. Canine renal disease is well documented, and it occurs in many breeds. The AKC Canine Health Foundation has issued several grants to study the disease, and research 7 Chew DJ, et. al., Fleisher, Susan L., Whiteley, et. al PLOS ONE, continues at this time. Easy to administer genetic testing for this and other heritable diseases is a relatively recent development in dog breeding. It is important for breeders to become knowledgeable about the tests available, while at the same time use caution and judgment in using the results of these tests in making breeding decisions. In order to better understand heritable renal disease in Dobermans, an open, honest discussion about the disease needs to occur within the Doberman community. We need to gain a better understanding of the frequency of the disease and the mutation in our Doberman population, and begin to assess whether the existence of the mutation is actually correlated to disease in Dobermans. When the disease strikes, whether in a young dog or an older dog, we need to be proactive in gathering as much data as possible about siblings and progeny, and avail ourselves of the genetic test to begin to understand whether the test actually correlates to disease in the Doberman. Speaking from personal experience, a diagnosis of chronic renal failure in a beloved pet is heartbreaking for the owner and breeder alike. Members of the United Doberman Club have always held genetic health in high regard, and I believe our members can provide leadership in educating Doberman owners and breeders about this disease by using the test as part of their breeding selection process and making others aware of the disease in Dobermans. As a Dobe owner, you can provide regular updates to the UDC Registrar (Administrator of Records) to keep the UDC database updated with cause of death of your dogs, and if you perform the RD test on your dogs, whether they are breeding stock or not, record those results with the UDC as well. If you are (or know) a DPCA member, that information can also go into the Dobequest database at org, which is quite feature-rich but sadly underused. 16 Photo by Summer Melillo The Dr. Jean Dodds Seminar in NewYork By Bob Cohen Note: this article was written based on notes I took during the seminar and from written materials. Any factual or technical errors should be blamed on me, not Dr. Dodds. Bob Cohen About a dozen years ago, I had an opportunity to listen to a presentation by veterinarian W. Jean Dodds at a national specialties in the southwest. That seminar lasted only a couple of hours and was jam-packed with information. When I learned that Dr. Dodds was going to be giving a two-day seminar near Albany, N.Y., last November I jumped at the opportunity. She covered an amazing amount of ground in those two days. I ll try to cover some of the highlights that I think may be of most interest to our members. To begin with: Who is Jean Dodds? In the 1960s she was a research scientist with the New York State Health Department, becoming chief of the Laboratory of Hematology. Two decades later, she moved to California and established Hemopet, the first nonprofit national blood bank program for animals. She is a co-trustee of the Rabies Challenge Fund Charitable Trust. Many will have heard of her from her work, along with Dr. Ron Schultz (who is principle investigator of the Rabies Challenge Fund) getting the word out that dogs do not need annual vaccinations for most illnesses. (Google Dodds vaccination protocol for more information.) Dr. Dodds notes that modern vaccine technology gives effective protection for pets against serious infectious diseases. But overvaccination vaccination when it is not necessary or giving vaccines that may not be needed can actually bring risk of adverse reactions. Some of these reactions are serious. They can be chronically debilitating, even fatal. The pet owner must balance the benefit/risk equation. Many vaccinations can be effective for many years, perhaps for the life of the dog. Measuring serum antibody titers can show whether a vaccination is needed or whether an earlier vaccination still provides effective protection. To measure titers, a blood sample is taken and then sent to a lab. Dr. Dodds recognizes that reactions to vaccines can vary by breed, which accords with the recommendations of many breeders to give puppy vaccinations individually (i.e. not to use vaccines with multiple components in one dose), and she recommends commencing the vaccination series later 16 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Spring 2015

17 than is common, at 9 to 10 weeks. Thereafter, it is recommended to perform titer tests instead of automatic annual vaccinations to learn if further vaccination is actually necessary or if the dog has sufficient protection from earlier vaccination. After puppyhood, boosters may only be needed every three to seven years, if even that frequently, for healthy adults (distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus vaccines can be effective for at least nine years), and geriatric dogs should be vaccinated only with caution. Interestingly, vaccine reactions can occur immediately or as much as 45 days after administration of the vaccine. She pointed out other issues with vaccines. Vaccines are generally administered with a standard dose without regard to the size or weight of the dog. Yet adverse reactions are inverse to weight, meaning more reactions with smaller dogs. Should a Doberman receive the same vaccine dose as a much smaller Papillon? Dr. Dodds said that there is no medical reason to give the same amount of vaccine regardless of the dog s body mass. Should vaccines be given together or separately in the same injection? (Monovalent or polyvalent products.) It may be wiser to give even boosters individually. (I ve found that it can be difficult to have your vet give vaccinations containing just one serum. More popular are combination vaccines which immunize against a group of diseases with just one shot. For me, this has meant custom ordering of monovalent products as vets around here do not stock them.) Combination vaccines may contain antigens other than those of the clinically important ( core ) disease agents, some of which may be unnecessary, and their use may increase the risk of adverse reactions. Dr. Dodds is by no means anti-vaccine. She points out that today s vaccines are good and effective. Perhaps 4 to 5 percent of vaccinated pets may suffer some adverse reaction to vaccination (vaccinosis), with some reactions being very minor. Yet there are great benefits to vaccination. For herd health, 70 percent need to be vaccinated, yet overall with dogs only about 50 percent are. Some individuals will be non-respondents or lowrespondents to vaccination. This is a genetic trait. Low- or non-response can be found through a serum titer test. Thus, Dr. Dodds recommends distemper and parvovirus titers about four weeks after the last puppy vaccination. If there is low response, give one more vaccination and re-test. A measurable titer means there is immunity. There is no benefit to booster shots if there is measurable immunity. There is no benefit to doing titer tests more often than every three years. Of great interest regarding vaccinations is the ongoing Rabies Challenge project. Rabies vaccinations can be quite stressful to a dog, and the present regime of state-mandated vaccinations at one- or three-year intervals is largely arbitrary. The project is well into its sixth year and seeks to provide a scientific basis for extending the time between state-lawmandated boosters for rabies vaccinations. They have found that all but a very few dogs have immunity to rabies at a point six-and-one-half years after vaccination. The period of effective immunity may be even longer, as it is for other vaccines. Dr. Dodds expects to be writing a paper with Professor Ron Schultz as coauthor. They expect to provide a scientific basis for a new rabies vaccination protocol with less frequent required vaccinations, and acceptance of titer testing in lieu of vaccination. I d known of Hemopet as a place that does titer testing of blood samples so that a dog owner can find out if previously given vaccinations are sufficient to have conferred immunity, obviating the need for additional vaccinations (at least at the time of the sample). But that is just one facet of Hemopet. It is also involved with rescue of retired racing Greyhounds and with a canine blood bank that supplies dog blood and blood products to veterinarians. Another service offered by Hemopet is a saliva sample-based test for food sensitivity or intolerance. There is plenty of information on these topics at the Hemopet website. (This isn t intended to be a commercial for Hemopet, but I was unaware of the range of its activities, and I suspect that many readers would similarly be unaware.) Dr. Dodds spent considerable time discussing illnesses that are of much greater concern to people with breeds other than mine. As she discussed these diseases, I was struck by how many afflict some breeds and I am grateful that my own breed is a fairly healthy breed, with few of these genetically based diseases. There are many autoimmune diseases that can afflict dogs. But even with a condition that is linked to a given breed, not every individual will suffer from the diseases. Autoimmune disease can be understood with the benefit of a Venn diagram showing that disease manifests when there is a combination of factors: genetics, virus, sex hormones and stress. Autoimmunity can develop in genetically susceptible individuals and may be triggered by environmental agents. Development of the condition is the result of the sum of genetic and environmental actors that override normal mechanics of self-tolerance. Etiology of Autoimmune Diseases Illustration courtesy of W. Jean Dodds, DVM Studies have shown that the genome is programmed for health and longevity. Diet and good nutrition are, not surprisingly, important in good health for our dogs. Dr. Dodds noted that modern dogs share 99.8 percent of genes with wolves. There are 122 genes located in the remaining.2 percent. Dogs have three specific genes that control digestion and utilization of starch. Modern dogs are adapted to eat and utilize more starch than wolves. They have also adapted to deal with stress. (Necessary if they re going to live with people, I presume!) Dr. Dodds stated that nutrition is the most important factor for human and animal health. The emerging field of nutrigenomics studies the molecular relationships between nutrition and the response of genes in promoting health. Genetic differences between individuals lead to variations in dietary requirements for energy and nutrient needs, and to maintain health. This may lead to customizing diets in humans and dogs to better promote individual health. Spring 2015 UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 17

18 In Memorium Honoring UDC Service Dogs that Passed Away in 2014 Compiled and submitted by Michelle L. Limoges (Current as of January 2015.) First Strykes Way of the Warrior Gabe ( ) Owner/handler: Maria Ciski, Kansas Dam: Irinland Emili Ester, CGC, Certified SAR-HRD, WAC, BH Sire: Ch. Czech., Bdsgr., Kob Black Gong, ScH-I, IPO-I Breeder: Tiffany Mahaffey Brizendine Gabe had an amazing personality confident, inquisitive, fearless and very smart. He was a distinctive, really big boy with a larger than life personality that masked a kind and loving spirit. As a Human Remains Detection dog, Gabe had a solid work ethic, generally working quickly and efficiently. He could go into a search sector, clear it and be done with surprising speed and accuracy. It was that ability, combined with his personality, which made him a successful search dog. Unfortunately, Gabe s working career was cut short with an early cancer diagnosis. In spite of that, he had accomplished a lot before being retired. Gabe was a certified member of Great Plains Search Dogs and an associate member of Michigan Search and Rescue. As a certified HRD team, Maria and Gabe responded to requests by law enforcement to find evidence at crime scenes, explosions and cold cases throughout the state of Kansas. The team responded to several tornadoes, most notably the EF-5 multiple-vortex tornado that struck Joplin, Mo., in May Gabe s strength and refusal to give up kept him going into retirement. In spite of a diagnosis of cancer in his nose, he learned to compensate and utilized the side of his nose that remained cancer-free to locate training problems. He loved to work, and in spite of his disease never lost his desire to get out and train with Maria. It was after his retirement that one of his most important roles developed. He became the constant companion and nanny for an elderly 91-year-old woman. During the day, he remained constantly at her side. He checked her and her room every morning and evening, and alerted Maria if anything happened. He never left the woman s side and, in truth, became her personal therapy dog. Their friendship and his many antics became her constant source of delight and endless stories. Unfortunately, even after extensive cancer therapy, Gabe passed away early in uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Spring 2015

19 Andor Von Hess ( ) Owner/handler: Pam Burns, Michigan Sire: Agir Miss Jakoso Dam: Ascomannis Leika Breeder: Ivan Rios Andor was born in Virginia to a dam that did French Ring and a sire that had done Schutzhund. I had high hopes of getting a nice Human Remains Detection dog when we went to test the litter. He tested so much higher than the puppy I initially liked. I had to take him! He was the smallest of the boys. He got into the car and never looked back. Anyone who met Andor recognized his total attachment to me. I was his person! Andor had big paws to fill, as Copper had DCM and he had to learn quickly, often working the same problems that Copper did. He went on his first search before he was 18 months old, working two solid days and handled it like he'd been doing it for years. He continued to work on many searches in Michigan and surrounding states throughout his life, having made several finds. His favorite searches were historical. He loved reconstructing a cemetery! Andor enjoyed living on the lake, swimming and retrieving a bumper off the dock. He took to agility with a passion and would critic any televised performances with grumbles. He was a very well-traveled boy between searches, seminars and vacations. It didn't matter what we did as long as he was with me; he was fine with it. While he really wasn't a social kind of guy, over the years he expanded his human and canine circle of friends. In his final months, Andor did several children's demos as well as doing therapy work at the nursing home, making a difference until the end. Andor left me far too early, leaving a big set of paws to fill for my new puppy, Trace. Questwood s Kisatchie Man ( ) Jäger Owner: Irene Korotev, Missouri Sire: Quinto von Falkenfeld Dam: Biemuller s Naughty Lola Breeder: Peter Betchley Jäger became a member of Missouri Search and Rescue K-9 at three months of age. He became operational two years later in 2005, and earned a CD in the AKC obedience ring the same month. He was operational in area search, land and water cadaver, light disaster, and became very proficient in trailing, which ended up being his forte. He certified in 2009 with the North American Police Working Dog Association in Cadaver. He was part of the heavy rescue task force with the area fire departments, and worked toward certification under SUSAR (State Urban Search and Rescue) standards. Jäger had a very productive working life, participating in more than 150 searches. Jäger was lucky enough to be successful on many of his searches, and as a result of one memorable case he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Lee s Summit Police Department. This honor was regarding his work in locating a suicidal man before he could harm himself. The police department had been searching for the man for several hours prior to the team s arrival on scent; Jäger found him within 15 minutes. In 2008, Jäger was not only selected as the DPCA SAR Doberman of the Year but also UDC Service Dog of the Year in Irene and husband Dave along with SAR Doberman Lexi are missing him very much.
