Sheila Hoffman President s Message Dear PHCA members, Happy New Year! It is a privilege to accept the president's role in the PHCA, and I thank the board for the vote of confidence. I would like to thank our past president, Cynthia Guinn, for all of her hard work during her tenure. It is my hope that this year will be both productive and interactive between the board and membership. Communication will be an integral part to making this work. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, ideas or concerns, so that together we can develop the proper solution. I can be reached on my cell phone at (518) (call or text), or by (ssipperly@aol.com). I can only act upon an issue if I am aware of it. I have addressed the board recently and presented two tasks that I would like to see accomplished in First, the PHCA website - we are in need of a serious upgrade! The board began discussion in 2011 about this issue, and requests for proposals (RFP) were sent out to different vendors who develop websites. The majority of the RFPs we got back fulfilled the requirements we were looking for, but were at the top of the budget. We also got a proposal at the low end of our budget. There do not seem to be any choices in the middle price range. My personal concern with the lowest bid is that it may not offer us any more than what we currently have and may not be user friendly for the website committee. I am not that savvy in the technology world, but my observation is that "you get what you pay for" when it comes to a well-functioning website. If we entertain the current high-end bids, it will use a large portion of the PHCA general budget, which is a concern. A potential solution to ease the cost of this venture would be to offer a fundraising event. I'm not sure what that event will be yet, but we would need to raise some significant funds from it to help defray costs. Also, if there are any members who have website production vendor contacts, please send them to me so we can explore other options. The other task I would like to have in place this year is a certification program for mentors. Many breeds have specific criteria to certify members to become mentors to judges and the interested fancier. We will be reviewing other clubs criteria and formulating a program for the PHCA. Finally, the 2012 National/Western will be happening in Chino, California at Prado Park from April Trophy lists have been distributed by . Please consider supporting a trophy or, at least, a contribution to the general fund. Your support is essential to the success of these events. We have an extension until February 1 st for trophy list completion. Specialty packets should be out by the end of this month. My hope is that this will be a successful year in completing the tasks above. I will continue to keep you posted about the board's progress. Any input from the membership would be welcome also. Hope to see many of you at the National! Respectfully, Stephen

To celebrate the dedication and enthusiasm of these exhibitors, the American Kennel Club has created a new AKC Owner/Handler Series, a non-titling competition that will showcase owner handled dogs at shows across the country. We re pleased to offer this special competition to celebrate AKC s owner/handlers, who are the core of our dog sport, said Robin Stansell, AKC s Vice President of Event Operations. We look forward to great competition in 2012 as the AKC Owner/Handler Series visits dog shows all over the country. The top-ranked dogs from the AKC Owner/Handler Series will be posted on and the top 10 owner-handled dogs of each breed and variety will be invited to compete at an end of year competition show. Rankings of the dogs competing in the series will be compiled based on the Best of Breed, Group and Best in Show placements in this specific series competition. The first shows offering the AKC Owner/Handler Series are these January/February events: Dog Fanciers Association of Oregon Saturday, January 21, 2012 Oakland County Kennel Club Saturday, January 21, 2012 Sahuaro State Kennel Club Saturday, February 4, 2012 Colorado Kennel Club Sunday, February 19, 2012 International Kennel Club of Chicago Sunday, February 26, 2012 AKC Exhibitor News The AKC Owner/Handler competition will be conducted following Best of Breed judging in each breed ring. All dogs in the BOB competition (including WD & WB) will stay in the ring after the judge makes their placements in BOB competition. The ring steward will ask all professional handlers to leave the ring and then the judge will then select the Best Owner Handler (BOH). The dog and its owner will continue to accrue points for any group placements or Bests in Show. Dogs owned or exhibited by professional handlers are not eligible for this competition. Professional handlers are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay. 7 AKC Delegate Report (meeting 9/12/11) Submitted by Dominic Carota P A G E 6 (Continued from previous page) The following items were discussed/presented during the AKC Review of 2011 Accomplishments: AKC Finances were reported on. Although still in a difficult situation, overall entries are up. Total revenues of $49.1 million for the first eleven months of 2011 were 6 1/2% lower than last year. The major sources of our revenues continued to be adversely impacted by a shrinking number of breeders, limited sponsorship and licensing opportunities and a dwindling number of affinity credit card holders spending less money. Successful ongoing cost containment efforts resulted in total year-to-date expenses being slightly less than the previous year. This resulted in a year-to-date operating deficit of $4.4 million. However, AKC operations maintained a positive cash flow of $1.5 million during this period. This was due to certain expenses being of a non-cash nature, such as depreciation. A difficult stock market environment over the past few months resulted in a year to date investment loss of $1.7 million. This represented a negative return of (minus) 2.1%. Although not specifically addressed in the forum it was overheard that the AKC continued to reduce staff and associated overhead in an effort to reduce operating costs. Also conceived in 2011 was the AKC Owner Handlers Series, a competition specifically designed to celebrate the joys of showing one s own dog. The series will comprise competitions at several dog shows across the country and will culminate with an award for the year s Best Owner/Handler. The AKC feels this is an exciting way to recognize the hobby exhibitor and inspire more people to become involved in our sport. In unwavering support of breeders, who remain the backbone of our Registry and the sport of purebred dogs, AKC continued to provide enhanced services through our Breeder of Merit program. Now with almost 7,000 breeders participating in this important program, the AKC is delighted to see growing numbers of breeders joining the quest to ensure the growth and integrity of the Registry. In the world of AKC Agility, two new titles were introduced, the Time to Beat titling class and the Preferred Agility Champion title. By creating ongoing enhancements to Agility, the AKC has seen the sport rise to new heights: In 2011 AKC logged its one millionth agility entry. Of course quantity cannot be outdone by quality. The AKC was proud to report that the AKC agility team representing the USA won many accolades including a gold medal at the Agility World Championships in France this year. Also in 2011, the AKC Performance Department gave all dogs and their owners an equal opportunity program with the new Coursing Ability Test. This introductory lure coursing event is a fun, healthy activity open to all breeds and offers three new titles. Adding another link in the chain of the human-canine bond, AKC brought the new Therapy Dog program to fruition in So far more than 1600 dogs have achieved the new therapy dog title which proudly recognizes those dogs who bring comfort and love to so many people in need. The November Meet the Breeds Event in New York City was a great success. With over 40,000 in attendance. Parent Clubs offered a broad scope of educational opportunities and the presenting sponsor, Pet Partners, provided pet care plans and spearheaded the more than 100 vendor booths and 15 additional sponsors. AKC's Government Relations Department welcomed some of the 110 elected officials serving as honorary chairs along with their staff members and families. Hundreds of Girl Scouts enjoyed the dogs while earning an AKC Merit badge. Two days of ongoing demonstrations, included Earthdog, Obedience, Agility, US Customs and Border Protection, United States Police Canine Association, the AKC's Humane Fund ACE Awards and the Best Booth. AKC Events efforts to introduce the four-to-six-month beginner puppy competition in order to increase entries, attract new exhibitors, socialize puppies with introduction to AKC Conformation games has been successful. On average, clubs that offered this special attraction enjoyed a five percent increase in entries of these puppies. Many of these were first-time exhibitors and potential new club members. Great news for rare breeds such as the Pharaoh Hound. When determining point schedules in any given region, the AKC previous computations excluded only national specialties. This was changed to exclude all parent club designated specialties. Also, local all-breed shows held three days prior the AKC National Champion Show, are also excluded because it provides undue entry in that particular division. Finally, the divisions were realigned based on the data collected in order to minimize the difference between entries in the states within each division. This allows a more equitable opportunity for majors within each division. Respectfully Submitted, Dominic Palleschi Carota AKC Delegate

8 In Case of Fire... From the spring 2001 AKC Gazette, reprinted with permission of the author, Rita Laventhall Sacks We live in a quiet, rather isolated place, with the back of our property ending in a bird sanctuary, which consists of miles and miles of wetlands. With the Florida drought in full force, these wetlands no longer exist as such, but have produced an abundance of highly flammable tall grass. I was doing some work on the swimming pool, while complaining to myself about the noise coming from the dirt bikes my neighbors sons were racing, a few acres away. I looked up in annoyance and saw that flames had engulfed the back of their property. A call to the fire department brought help within 5 minutes, but by then the fire was raging out of control. It was racing toward our house, and within minutes it began to encircle our land. It is always interesting to watch wildfires on TV, and see how the firefighters deal with the path of the fire by cutting through the land with bulldozers. However, when you watch the fire jump over the breaks and keep raging toward you, the feeling of danger is overwhelming. With the noise and heat of the fire, and the terrible smoke, I quickly realized that I might lose our home and kennel. That became secondary to the immediate danger to our dogs. We thought about taking them and leaving, but we did not have that luxury of escape. We had a total of twenty dogs, including young puppies, and there was no way we could rescue them all if we left. And so we stayed, watched and hoped. There was little we could do except wet down the area around the buildings, knowing that the intensity of this fire was greater than whatever small effort we could make to forestall it. The firefighters struggled from 3 PM until 11PM to bring the fire under control. We lost some land to the fire but we were safe. The fire continued to burn in the marshlands for over 4 weeks, with almost 800 acres devastated. Some good has come from this ordeal. In the past, we had discussed the problems of saving our dogs from fire. We came up with different plans of action, but never actually did anything but talk about it. Now we realize that plans must be put into effect while there is time to do so. We now know what we must do and are working on it. Do you have emergency plans to protect your dogs in time of disaster? Do you have enough room in your vehicles to make an escape with your dogs, if necessary? If you are away from home, have you left a work number for a neighbor to reach you in an emergency? Is there a note on your door or a prominent window stating that you have x number of animals within that need to be rescued in an emergency? Do you have a safe haven to take your dogs if you do leave with them? The list of possibilities can be extensive. It is important to think things out when all is quiet and safe. When the danger is upon you, it is too late to think calmly and make the best possible decisions for you and your dogs. Postscript: We watch the wasteland every day. It will probably be years before it becomes a vital wetland again. The herons, storks and other fishers are long gone, and we miss them. But now that the land has cooled down, we have new visitors. Every day we see hundreds of Sandhill Cranes picking in the burned ground. They arrive at dawn at leave at sundown in huge noisy groups. A testament that things change, but life goes on.

9 Meet the Breeds, Orlando, Florida P A G E 8 The 2011 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship show in Orlando, Florida was an amazing event. In addition to conformation and obedience, the performance events allowed the public to really see the dogs in action. Even law enforcement dogs put on demonstrations. The Meet The Breeds portion of the event was held on December 17 and 18 and was intended to bring the public up close and personal with the 170 breeds whose parent clubs participated. It succeeded. This was my fourth AKC/ Eukanuba MTB and I feel it was the best yet. Because of the much larger venue of the Convention Center, we were able to be given larger booth space than in previous years and "The Crew" they had on hand to assist with unloading and reloading made navigating the huge facility a snap. PHCA member participation was wonderful. Things went very smoothly. Particular thanks go to Sheila Hoffman and Shawna Swanson who did a marvelous job helping decorate and arrange the booth. They came down to Orlando with wall hangings and posters including some rare photos of early Pharaohs as well as photos highlighting Pharaoh Hound versatility. In addition to Sheila and Shawna manning the booth both days between their dogs' events, thanks go to Linda Lysher who made a generous commitment of time to the booth both days. Thanks also go to Dominic Carota for fitting in blocks of time for booth coverage both days between his obligations to AKC. Thank you to other PHCA members for coming by...robert Newman, Pam Haig, Linda Witt and Theresa Harper. And, last, special appreciation to my friend, Paige Zalnoski who has helped out every year. This was the first time she didn't bring Preston, her Pharaoh who died with all but one of her other dogs in her house fire a few years ago. He is missed. The Pharaoh Hounds that participated were very well received by the public...and received the public very well. We are all looking forward to next year. 11 Meet the Breeds, Javits Center, New York City P A G E 1 0 November 19 & 20, 2011 According to AKC Board Chair, Mr. Ronald Menaker, one can summarize the results using either of two well-known quotes -- "If you build it, they will come" or "Location, location, location." Indeed they came. They kept coming and they continued arriving for two days without stop. Over 40,000 people attended the Meet the Breeds Event in New York City in November! Parent Clubs including the PHCA offered a broad scope of educational opportunities. Dominic Carota, Stephen Sipperly, Denise Gentile and Jay Gentile along with Blaise, Kali, Phaith and Sirus represented the PHCA to the general public. The Pharaohs were absolutely wonderful with the public especially young, inquisitive children. The presenting sponsor, Pet Partners, provided pet care plans and spearheaded the more than 100 vendor booths and 15 additional sponsors in attendance. Tens of thousands of dog lovers of all sizes and shapes were educated in numerous ways about the American Kennel Club, AKC CAR, and The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation. The AKC Board and the Staff thanked all volunteers, Parent Clubs and their very special dogs!! Submitted by Dominic Palleschi Carota

14 AKC National Lure Coursing Championship The American Kennel Club s National Lure Coursing Championship (NLCC) competition was held in Cat Spring, TX on December 3rd and 4th The American Kennel Club Offers only one NFC (National Field Champion) Title in Lure Coursing per year. This year the title was awarded to the Pharaoh Hound Iko, NFC FC Hallam s Iko Iko of Phaethan SC owned by Katherine Smith. Iko who is 2 ½ years old and had quite an amazing start in 2011: AKC: Out of 8 events - 8 BOBs, 2 BIFs, and NLCC. ASFA Out of 19 events - 16 BOBs3 BIFs out of 5 offered and 2 BIEs out of 3. This is the third time since 1994 that a Pharaoh Hound has won the NLCC. The first Pharaoh Hound was Greedy (NFC DC Anarbens I Want It All, SC, FCh) owned by Kay and Marshall Durr who earned the title in St. Louis in 1999, the second Pharaoh Hound was Violet (NFC DC Hallam s Essence of Violet, MC, LCX5 FCh) in North Carolina in 2007 owned by Dominic Carota and Stephen Sipperly. Violet was the only Sighthound in NLCC History to win Best in Field on the first day of the NLCC, Best in Field on the second day of the NLCC and then go on to win Best in Event at the NLCC. Check it out all three were bitches something to be said for girl power in our breed! To enter the NLCC, the AKC has set forth a set of qualifications as follows:all hounds must be qualified to enter AKC Lure Coursing Trials as stated under Chapter I, Section 3 of the Regulations for Lure Coursing Tests and Trials. Any of the following requirements shall qualify a hound to enter the NLCC: 1. All eligible hounds which have earned an AKC Field Championship prior to the closing date for entries. 2. All eligible hounds in the Top 25 hounds of each breed from the preceding calendar year, using the AKC designated system for breed points. 3. All eligible hounds which were awarded a Best in Field at an all breed AKC Lure Coursing Trial in the current year. 4. Best of Breed on each day of the most recent AKC National Lure Coursing Championship. 5. All eligible hounds which were awarded Best in Field at an AKC Lure Coursing trial held in conjunction with thatbreed s National Specialty. 6. All Open and Veteran hounds must have an accumulation of at least 3 points. From what I understand from Robert Newman, Darci Kunard, Katherine Smith and numerous friends in other breeds, great fun was had by all especially the Pharaohs doing what they do best! 16 Health News: Addison s Disease There have been some discussions in the past about the incidence of Addison s in Pharaoh Hounds. I was asked to write an article for the Scribe. Instead I have provided a link to a professionally written article by a board certified specialist: This article and many others are available on my web site in a service provided to members of the Veterinary Information Network. You can be assured that any of these articles are peer reviewed and not just one doctor s opinion, but a result of extensive literature review. With that information, the health committee has confirmation of only 9 Pharaoh s with Addison s disease. I m sure there may be more that have not been reported. Even so, this is not a very large number even with our small population. There certainly are concerns if there are obviously family ties. We need to be vigilant that this does not become a breed problem. Reporting cases to the database is essential to this process. There are families of Standard Poodles where a dog is presumed to have Addison s until proven otherwise. On the other hand any dog of any breed as an individual could have a pituitary or adrenal tumor leading to Addison s disease. Enjoy the article! Submitted by Thom Haig DVMPHCA Health Committee Member Living With An Addison s Dog by Ellie Marks The fear of the unknown about sums up life with your Addison s Dog. Never knowing if you may lose the battle and lose a beloved pet or if you will be able to continue the burden of the expense of years of blood work every three months and expensive medicine every 25 days for the rest of your dogs life. The fear of never knowing if your dog is just having a bad day or if the weird things she is doing are more serious and may be Addison s related. Paranoia; watching your dog obsessively for signs that may mean her cortical levels are off and she may need to go to the vet.again. Sadness; Seeing your dog deathly thin and on the edge of death from an Addison s crash and struggling to fight her way back from it. Watching your lure coursing champ run out of steam and get frustrated halfway around a course she used to run energetically and love doing it before Addison s struck her down. Seeing your beautiful healthy vivacious dog go from young and energetic to grey and lethargic. The unknown; why did my dog get this? The fear; will she live out her life expectancy. The Stress; did I mark down when her next shot is due? Did I remember to call the vet for more medicine? Should I take her in for blood work now, she may not be right? The apprehension; should I let her lure course or will it be too much for her this week? Can I take her to the doggie park or will it wear her down? Can I change her dog food or treats or will she get digestive issues again? These are the day to day things those of us living with an Addison s dog go through. The fear is also owning another dog closely related to your Addison s dog and waiting for the other shoe to drop. Wondering if you ll have two dogs that will need constant medical care and expense and two dogs to worry about, daily. Loving your dog so much and always trying to do what s best for that dog is not enough with an Addison s dog. Now you must also be a medical provider, a detective, a support system and a physiologist; wondering, watching and waiting. And now you must also be a source of more stress for your beloved pet who does not understand why you must constantly drag her off to the dreaded vet, stick her with painful needles every 25 days for the rest of her life and watch her like a hawk. Constant diligence to daily meds and vet appointments and the stress of worrying about slipping up that schedule could mean loosing your sweet loving dog so there is no rest for the weary. Going on vacation must now be scheduled around your Addison dogs Percorton shot and choosing a pet sitter just got a whole lot harder. So to sum it up: Learn about Addison s disease before purchasing a pure-bred canine. Check and then re-check the breeders you are considering for health issues, particularly genetic disorders in the breeder s lines. Check references and insist to speak to owners of dogs from breeders you are considering. Start your dog s life out right with the proper vaccine schedule, taking extreme care when it comes to not overdoing vaccinations. Speak with your vet about Addison s triggers and research online resources. Addison s is a genetic disorder believed to be passed on by two Addison s gene carrying parents and can be triggered by events such as vaccinations and environmental triggers. Learn all you can and if you still draw the short straw and your beloved dog ends up diagnosed with Addison s, love her with all your heart and give her extra love because it s all worth it when she looks into your eyes with those warm soulful eyes that say I love you and thanks for loving me and never giving up on me.
