Don t Miss Our March 11th Program Bulldoggers Mike & Kathy Leudenmuller will talk about the Beautiful Bulldog They will have handouts that describes the standard and copies of the infamous BCA Bulldogger Quarterly publication, as well as one of their bulldogs! The Bulldog was originally thought to be a butcher's dog, used to subdue an animal for slaughter. It was then bred to participate in the "sport" of bullbaiting, an extremely cruel activity. The original Bulldog had to be courageous, very ferocious and savage. It also had to be almost insensitive to pain. Many of the features in the current bulldog standard are derived from the physical requirements needed by these dogs. When bull baiting was outlawed in England in 1835, the Bulldog, as it then existed, had outlived its purpose and would no longer exist as a breed. However, a group of Bulldog lovers felt that the breed should not disappear and decided to preserve it. In order to preserve the breed, they had to remove its undesirable fierce characteristics, while preserving and accentuating its finer qualities. Within a few generations the Bulldog became one of the finest physical specimens of dogdom without the viciousness they previously exhibited. The people who saved the breed formed an organization that eventually became The Bulldog Club, Inc. - the "mother" club of the breed worldwide.

4 Page 4 Linkin is the Poster Dog for Therapy Dog Day Tattle Tails The UCSB Health and Wellness Center under the leadership of Dr, Mark Shisham has teamed with the Love on a Leash (LOAL) Therapy Dog organization for the past 5 years to provide emotional support for the students of UCSB. VCDFA Director Tommy Dickey s Great Pyrenees Teddy, Linkin and Mia (before her passing) have been regular participants at these events. The Dog Therapy Day is a highlight of each quarter. An estimated 3,000 students come to these gatherings. Approximately dogs are brought to campus wearing their blue LOAL vests and yellow UCSB Therapy Dog neckerchiefs to bring joy and happiness to students only days before their final exams. The dogs are smothered in pets and hugs and laughs and shrieks of joy fill the air as students pose for pictures or do their own selfies. On a somber note, the LOAL dogs were brought to campus to console students after the shooting rampage in Isla Vista last spring and Teddy attended the memorial service in Harder Stadium where he met with many of his admirers. Tommy also brings his Great Pyrenees Teddy and Linkin to join him in the classroom almost all days he is teaching on campus. Last year, Teddy, Mia, and Linkin were asked to come to campus to encourage students to get immunized for Meningitis at clinics. They are also being used to attract students to organizations promoting campus outreach and environmental activities with their images appearing on websites, posters, and banners. Continued...

5 Page 5 Linkin s the Poster Dog for Therapy Dog Day continued... Tattle Tails Last fall they had heir own Therapy dog booth for the Responsible Dog Owners Day at Ventura Harbor. Teddy and Linkin, who have now passed 750 therapy visits, have received numerous awards from the AKC and the Great Pyrenees Club of America. HANDLING CLASSES to Begin on March 10th, 6:00 pm Nancy Bush Park in Camarillo Conformation Handling Classes will be held every Tuesday, beginning March 10th 6:00 pm Nancy Bush Park 1150 Bradford Avenue (corner of Las Posas & Crestview) in Camarillo Classes are free of charge. 14 Page 14 Tattle Tails The Winners Circle received his first qualifying score (82/100) in RALLY ADVANCED B at the Silver Bay Show in Del Mar Sunday February 21. Teddy had just celebrated his 8th birthday the day before with Tommy's 250 oceanography students at UCSB. Their friend Kim Burns, who has done VCDFA Handling classes with Donna and Jeff, won the conformation Great Pyrenees breed and a Group 4 in Working Group with Blutas (pictured below) "
