8 Tattle Tails AKC Rules and Regulations As a follow up to last issue s Canine Influenza Virus article I have included this It is not so much an AKC Rule as an advisory for judges regarding the examination of a dog s bite. Most exhibitors I questioned were not aware of this letter but had noticed more judges asking them to show their dogs bite a the recent shows. The following letter has been sent to all AKC conformation judges: Page 8 Dear AKC Judge, As you may be aware, there has been a recent increase in reported cases of Canine Influenza. In consideration of this fact, and for the safety and welfare of our dogs, Judging Operations strongly advises that all judges should ask the exhibitor to show the bite/open the mouth when conducting oral exams. This recommendation is consistent with information included in The Rules, Policies and Guidelines for Conformation Dog Show Judges under Evaluating a Dog s Mouth (page 13), Many exhibitors prefer to open their dog s mouth themselves for examination. However, you have the authority to personally open the dog s mouth. We do encourage judge s as a general practice to ask exhibitors to open the mouth. In addition to sanitary reasons; the exhibitor is familiar with the dog resulting in a more efficient and pleasant experience. If necessary, as the judge you do have the authority to personally open the dog s mouth. If it does become necessary or you elect to conduct the oral exam yourself, we do advise that you sanitize your hands after examining each dog. Please do not hesitate to contact Judging Operations or speak with the Executive Field Representative in attendance with any questions you may have. Thank you, Tim Thomas Director, Dog Show Judges There are times when even the best manager is like the little boy with the big dog waiting to see where the dog wants to go so he can take him there. Lee Iacocca (former president and CEO of Chrysler) Do you have a question or clarification about an AKC Rule or Regulation? it to Mary at the Tattle Tails mary.lukins@verizon.net

13 VCDFA Newsletter Page 13 After viewing AKC s Disaster Response Trailer, we need to ask Are You and Your Pets Prepared for an Emergency Event? If not, please take the time to do it NOW. Your Animal Loved Ones Depend On YOU to Keep Them Safe Don t Let Them Down! YOU SHOULD HAVE 2 PET DISASTER KITS: IN ONE ~ put everything you and your pets will need to stay where you are. THE OTHER ~ should be a lightweight, smaller version you can take with you if you and your pets have to get away. Have The Following Items Assembled & Ready for an Emergency: FOOD, WATER & MEDICATIONS ~ Always keep extra dry and/or canned food & stored water on hand ~ at Least a 3 Day Supply for Each of Your Pets. Do not let your pets food supply get down to the last few crumbs! The same goes for prescribed or daily medications. DISHES - for Food & Water, plus a hand can opener. SANITATION~ Doggie walk bags for dogs, bagged pet litter with pan and scoop for kitty. Be sure to rotate your supplies so they are always fresh COLLAR, ID TAGS, & LEASH ~ Have collars/harnesses and leashes, with ID tags, for each pet (even cats that live indoors). All of your pets should be Micro-Chipped. DOG CRATE/CAT CARRIER for each pet. Crates should be large enough for dogs to stand, turn around and lie down and have good air circulation. Bring bedding and a cover for sun, rain, ash etc. DO NOT transport a cat unless it is crated. Crate Train your pets in advance they will feel much more safe and calm in their den. YOUR PET S IMPORTANT INFO ~ Include a photo of each pet (with you in the photo, if possible). Record license, microchip & vaccination information with copies of important medical records and prescriptions. Place in a clear plastic bag & store in your disaster kit. FAMILIAR ITEMS ~ Favorite toys, treats and bedding can help reduce stress for your pets.

14 VCDFA Newsletter Page 14 Are You and Your Pets Prepared for an Emergency Event? MAKE A PLAN : Depending on your circumstances and the type of the emergency, the first important decision you will need to make is whether to stay put or get away. You should understand and plan for both possibilities. Watch TV, listen to the radio and check the internet for information and instructions. If you are given specific instructions to Evacuate, Shelter -in-place or seek Medical Treatment, Do So Immediately. KNOW WHERE TO GO ~Make arrangements NOW with friends or family members outside of the danger area who will welcome your pets. Also, keep a list of pet-friendly hotels and boarding facilities. DEVELOP A BUDDY SYSTEM ~ Make plans with your neighbors to care for or evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so. Show them your disaster kit, exchange contact numbers and pre-plan a meeting place. OTHER SPECIAL ANIMALS BIRDS should be transported in a secure travel cage with extra cage liners, blanket and plant mister (for cooling). Feed fruit and vegetables with a high water content. SNAKES can be transported in a pillowcase but must be transferred to more secure housing at the evacuation site. Take a heat rock and a water bowl large enough for soaking. FISH should be transported in a shatterproof container with a lid, such as an insulated ice chest. Fill only 1/2 to 3/4 full of water and avoid overcrowding the fish. Take food and any equipment needed to keep the water circulated, oxygenated, cleaned and heated as necessary. SMALL MAMMALS (rats, hamsters etc.) can be transported in their living cages or secure traveling carriers. Take bedding materials, food, dishes and water bottles. HORSES & LIVESTOCK Require special handling and sheltering. It is extremely important that you have made arrangements for trailers and facilities to transport and shelter your horses and other large animals before the next emergency strikes. BE THEIR BEST FRIEND ~ HAVE A PLAN!
