2 Enviro-Stories Education Program Enviro-Stories is a competition based education program for primary schools that was developed by PeeKdesigns. This program provides an education experience for kids through learning about the environment. The final product is a published story written about local issues, by local kids, for local kids and future generations. In 2013, the Save Our Species Enviro-Stories Education Program provided local kids with the opportunity to write and illustrate stories about threatened species. This program was sponsored by the Central West and Lachlan Catchment Management Authorities. Central West Catchment Management Authority The Central West CMA is committed to work with the community to conserve, improve and manage natural and cultural resources. The catchment is located in central western New South Wales. Lachlan Catchment Management Authority At the Lachlan CMA we work to achieve balance between productive and natural landscapes. The catchment is located in central western New South Wales and in the heart of Wiradjuri Country.

5 Jacky dragons are not currently listed as a threatened species but are becoming rare in a number of areas. By reading this book you are learning how to help Jacky dragon populations and protect them from becoming a threatened species. 3
6 Meet Jimmy the Jacky dragon, he is sleeping in the warm spring sun. He has just woken up from his long winter sleep. The days are getting warmer in Peel. 4
7 As the days get warmer, Jimmy finds things quite hard. There is a lot of competition to find food and a mate. He has to find suitable habitat where he can live. Jimmy also has to watch out for predators. 5

Jimmy loves chowing down on flies, moths, caterpillars, grasshoppers and small beetles. Their habitats are under threat from clearing for development and farmland. 6
9 Jimmy is a rock star and dances to find a mate! He s also very strong and does push ups to attract a female. He thinks his smooth moves will set him apart from the others. You should try and imitate how you think Jimmy would dance. Photographer: G. Steenbeeke 7
10 Ever since European settlement, Jimmy and his relatives have had a huge disadvantage. Not only does he have to worry about air attacks from native birds of prey and ground attacks from snakes and bigger lizards, but now he also has to look out for introduced animals like dogs, cats and foxes. 8
11 Jimmy hibernates in a burrow just below the surface. Cats, dogs and foxes can smell him. Oh no! Look out Jimmy. A dog has found you! Quick! Give the book a shake so he can run away! 9
12 What a day! But now it s night. Jimmy will have to be super sneaky to survive. But wait! There s a cat that s found Jimmy! Quick! Give him a poke so he can escape. 10
13 That was so lucky! Thank goodness Jimmy can run super-fast on his back legs. That was a big night! 11
14 Wait can you hear it? Oh no! The worst thing of all... A LAWN MOWER!!! And Jimmy is sleeping! Call out to him so he can wake up! 12
15 Wow, now that was close! But his home is gone because of the weight of the lawn mower. At least he didn t die. 13
16 Now Jimmy will have to find somewhere else to live. Hopefully there is somewhere safer than here. 14
17 People put a lot of pressure on Jimmy and his Jacky dragon friends. We must take better care of them or their populations will drop so low they will become a threatened species. Please do not clear native vegetation, keep your dogs and cats away from bushland, and keep them inside at night. This will help to protect Jimmy. 15
