1 October 2017 Open Meeting October 11, 2017 The Barking at 7:00 p.m. Times FORT WAYNE OBEDIENCE TRAINING CLUB CLUB PHONE: President s Message & Open Meeting Hi everyone and to all the new members, thanks for joining FWOTC and welcome to the club. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to contact any of the board members. We are listed on the first page of the Barking Times with our contact info. Also, please check the Important Dates at the end of the Barking Times for events and class schedules. Our next Open Meeting will be October 11, 2017 at 7 pm at our training building. Those in attendance will receive 10 PAWS points. The Executive Meeting will be held on October 8th. If you have anything that you would want to be heard at the meeting you can contact me at or Crazyshelties@comcast.net, or contact any board member. As you have probably noticed, the fair grounds has installed a new gate and it can be problematic at times. If you are operating the gate using the key pad, move your car away from the gate. The gate operates by using a laser between the key pad and the unit at the base of the gate. Try to maintain a clear path between them. Also should you find yourself locked in, just pull up to the gate, it will open to let you out then close behind you. On October we are holding our agility trial at he Plex South on Engle Rd. If you ve never experienced one, this is an excellent time to see what it s about. We can always use workers and you earn PAWS Points too. Admission is free, so bring some friends See you all October 11th. 2 BARKING TIMES SUMBISSIONS Please send BT submissions to If you submit via a different address your article might get overlooked. Next BT deadline is November 15th. Thanks, Cory Dold Brags Congratulations on Your Achievements! CONGRATULATIONS to Robin Katen s Newfoundland Dory! Ebb Tide s Wanna Rock The Boat CGC BN RN TKN WD (Dory) passed the Junior level water test on September 9th at Great Lakes Newfoundland Club s test in Gowen MI. She is now a Newfoundland Club of America Water Dog (Details on page 5). Dory also earned her Novice Trick Dog title on June 25th at the South Central Newfoundland Club s Fun Day in West Lafayette, IN. CONGRATULATIONS to Pam Johnson s Labrador - Retriever Pilot! CT Orion s Ready for Takeoff TD TDU VST TDX, also known as Pilot, has crossed our northern border and ventured in Ontario Canada to continue his tracking adventures. On June Pilot passed his CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) TD (Tracking Dog) in Puslinch Ontario on 415 meter track with 5 turns. Hay was 4 feet tall, and Pilot with his usual enthusiasm motored his way to the glove in a quick 6 minutes. Pam held on for dear life trying not to fall down hollering wait for me Pilot which he did not hear or care one whit about waiting. I could not see him in the tall hay but he certainly knew his job and made short work on this track. I got to catch my breath at the end when he found the glove. Good Boy Pilot! On September we were lucky to get into a Urban Tracking Dog (UTD) test in Guelph Ontario. Off we went again over the northern Border at Sarnia, through customs to wend our way north of London to Guelph for this challenging entry level Canadian Kennel Club test. This test is comparable in some ways to our Tracking Dog Urban (TDU) but challenges the team with a turn on non vegetated surface similar to our MOT (Moment of Truth) turn in AKC VST tests. Pilot made short work of this 3 turn track that started under a tree line adjacent to parking lot and a building. A 70 meter leg to a left turn at the end of the building crossed the parking lot and continued along the front of the building on grass to a wood article, which Pilot indicated nicely. Another 30 meters to a right turn on grass that quickly moved into a large parking lot. Pilot motored along, indicated the left turn in the parking lot and tracked another 80 meters across the parking lot to the final leather article on the edge of the parking lot. Canada offers a Tch, Tracking Dog Champion after earning 4 titles; TD UTD TDX and UTDX. They also offer a Master Championship where you can earn the TDX and UTDX a 2nd time. So we will continue our journey up north and enjoy the experience of tracking in Canada. CONGRATULATIONS to Lynn Swager s Doberman Pinscher Storm! Lyndobes Midnight Storm earned her Beginners Novice Title with a 2nd place qualifying score at the Doberman Pinscher s Club of America National Specialty. CONGRATULATIONS to Lynn Swager s Doberman Pinscher T! Lyndobes TaKeela s Charm earned the 2nd Leg towards her Open Title at the Doberman Pinscher s Club of America National Specialty.

Tori earned her name on the traveling Master Agility Trophy CONGRATULATIONS to June Mintchell s Scent Work Dogs! I went to the Eukanuba inaugural Scent Work trials in Wilmington Oh and showed Borzois Rider and Games and Border Collie Joe. The boys Qed 16 out of 21 runs. Joe had just 2 months of training so didn't do as well as the borzoi. Games and Rider had less than 3 months of training prior to showing. Rider finished his SIN title (Scent Work Interior Novice) and his SHDN title (Scent Work Handler Discrimination Novice). Games finished his SCN title (Scent Work Containers Novice). Plus all 3 boys have QS towards various other Scent Work titles. Games and Joe both had 2nd place wins in very large handler discrimination classes as well. It was a blast! - June Concerns, Issues, Problems When it comes to resolving any problem, concern or issue, it is important that the appropriate persons are notified and involved. 4 Sunshine In loving memory, U-R01 U-CDX U-CH Oakgate s Over The Rainbow UD RE AX AXJ Rafferty July 17, July 18, 2017 I can t believe I am writing a memorial for my Beloved Rafferty. He was healthy and happy, running around the yard and a freak accident happens and he is instantly critically ill. He fought hard for 3 days at the vet hospital but his injuries and his Addison s disease were just too much. Rafferty, U-R01 U-CDX U-CH Oakgate s Over The Rainbow UD RE AX AXJ was such a wonderful loving companion. As a puppy he was raised by his loving and patient Great Uncle Raney. Raffy definitely had his own mind as to how and when he wanted to do things! He really taught me to be more humble and patient. His favorite venue was conformation showing where he would strut around the ring, self stack and pose on the table. A professional handler nicknamed him Hot Shot at a conformation seminar. Raffy s training and showing in performance venues went a little slower because throughout much of his life, he was plagued with tummy troubles. We had to cancel going to many a show. He saw many vets but no one could pin point the cause and only treat the symptoms. Despite his health issues and an early retirement, he attained a UD, four UDX legs, a RE, an AX and an AXJ. He was YTCA s Obedience Dog of the Year five years in a row and had multiple High In Trials and High Combines at Specialties. In August 2014, Raffy had two bouts of Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis within a two week period. This time the ACTH test indicated he had A Typical Addison s disease which is the first stage of Addison s. His adrenal gland was not producing the cortisol which the body produces to handle stress. He was started on Pred, Pepcid and a special prescription diet that he dearly loved. I also fed him 7 small meals a day so his tummy was never too empty. He had just turned 8 but had to retire from training and showing because of the stress. I didn t care, I was just so happy to see him happy and healthy with a hearty appetite every day. Rafferty was so full of life and almost ornery in his retirement. He dearly loved his brother, Robbie, my Pap. He helped to raise Robbie and they adored each other. They would play and play with their toys together. Raffy kept the yard free of critters and just loved kitties although they never liked him! He loved car rides, cuddling under the covers with me and keeping watch out the patio doors. He was always a comfort by my side through all my surgeries and health problems. He had the dearest sweetest face that just melted my heart. I could write pages and pages about what a dear sweet soul he was. I have lost many wonderful dogs in my life but Raffy s life, cut short by a branch falling from a tree, has really devastated me. That tree has been cut down to a stump. Rafferty, my Dear Sweet Boy, I miss you more than words can say. You have left my life but you will never leave my heart. They say Heaven is where you get to see all the dogs you have ever loved. I certainly pray that this is true. Deb Gatchell BUD December 5, Septmber 28, 2017 Bud was my first show champion, the first dog to be titled at both ends of his name, and the best dog ever. He was almost 16. That s a long time to be together and I wouldn t have missed it for the world. Until we meet again my friend... Diane Townsend In loving memory, CH Jester s Dead Serious RE

FWOTC OCTOBER VST TEST. It was a lovely day for the VST test on the campus of IPFW and Ivy Tech. Our judges from Rochester Illinois Connie Austin and Ule James did a great job of plotting some very nice doable VST tracks. There were no passes but several of the exhibitors got very far into the track for a couple of heartbreakers, only failing a short way from the end of the track. HUGE thanks as always to our volunteers who make this all happen. Some of our volunteers are club members and live local. Others drive in to help from Michigan, Kokomo, Toledo area, and the Indianapolis area. Marlene Hill was Test Secretary and Chair along with judges driver and head honcho for the whole test; Barb Croy was head tracklayer; Our tracklayers were Kelly Urick, Steve Archacki, George Sype, Kim Kearfott, Michael Farley, and Debby Lynn. These folks come out on Saturday to plot and early Sunday morning to get the tracks in for the exhibitors. We could not run the test without food and folks to drive and pick up tracklayers. Judy Dick provided our morning food bringing donuts, pastries and bananas on Sunday; Peg Furman and Teresa Brewer took care of lunch getting some yummy Lee s Chicken, ice tea, and cookies; Sherry Bell and Jenna Janda Timmis shuttled tracklayers and exhibitors back and forth on test day; Cheryl Ertelt was our photographer. Water Dog Newfoundland Club of America Junior Water Test There are three levels of tests: Junior (Water Dog), Senior (Water Rescue Dog) and Excellent (Water Rescue Dog Excellent), all of which simulate water rescue events. The tests are pass/fail; two judges must pass the dog on all exercises for the dog to earn the title. The junior exercises are as follows: 1. Basic control- the dog must complete an off-lead heel pattern and recall. Failure to stay with the handler is a disqualification and the dog is excused from the test. 2. Bumper retrieve- handler throws a bumper at least 30 ft. from shore, the dog must retrieve and return to handler. 3. Take a line- a drowning victim 50 ft. from shore calls the dog. The dog must take a line to the victim. 4. Drop retrieve- a boat cushion or life vest is dropped silently from the back side of a canoe 50 ft. from shore. After the canoe leaves the test area, the dog must mark the cushion or vest, retrieve it and return to handler. 5. Tow a boat- a row boat is positioned 50 ft. from shore. A steward on the boat holds an 8 ft. line attached to a bumper and calls the dog to the boat. The handler sends the dog. The dog must swim out, take the bumper, turn around and pull the boat to shore until the boat is grounded. 6. Swim with handler- dog and handler swim side by side until they have been actually swimming approximately 20 ft., then they turn to shore, the handler grabs the dog s tail or rump, and the dog pulls the handler to shore.
