1 The NLRC was organized in 1996 with the idea of creating a national club that would preserve and promote the Labrador Retriever. Everyone in the Labrador community is welcome...from pet owners to old timers. We are a National Lab Club formed by the members, for the members, working together for the preservation, betterment and service to the Labrador Retriever. THE LABRADOR CONNECTION JANUARY 2012 ELECTRONIC EDITION AKC Inspector calling, It s Your Turn! Hello, this is your AKC Inspector, It s your turn. I am calling from the American Kennel Club and I want to come by and do a kennel inspection on Monday morning at nine o clock. Inside this issue... AKC Inspector: No, I m from the AKC and I m here doing kennel inspections and you re on my list. Me: Sir, you are welcome to come by but it must be when either my husband or one of my children are here with me as I don t have company when I m here alone. AKC Inspector: Well, I don t know how the AKC will feel about that.: Me: Could you come by at 6:30pm when my husband gets home? AKC Inspector: I will need to see your [dog] records of your litter registrations. (blank Dog Registration forms can be found on page 8: Me: You mean, not my litter registrations that are all filled out? AKC Inspector: Yes, those too, but also the form you can download from the AKC site that has the breeding information for each dog. Me: Yes, sir, I have that book and that s partly filled out, I ll get it done. (And, I did.) The AKC Inspector was clear and concise in telling me exactly what I needed to have ready for him for this inspection. The AKC Inspector and I went back and forth until we could come up with a schedule for him to visit.now to the good stuff! The AKC Inspector arrived exactly on time and I asked him to remove his shoes but he responded he had just sprayed his shoes [with disinfectant] when he left his car. Okay...I let him pass on that, but I know better than to do that.i was too excited, nervous, whatever.to stay on task. He showed me his identification and came in and started talking. When he was on the outside of the family room he saw a couple of my dogs and Continued next page

2 Page 2 AKC Inspector Calling.. continued from page 1 and said, nobody can accuse you of underfeeding, right? That sort of broke the ice. He continued to stand and tell us the reason AKC does kennel inspections. Seems they were sued in 1996 for a parentage issue so they then instituted the rules he was about to explain to us. His main interest was our paperwork. THE paperwork found on the AKC Downloadable forms concerning Record Keeping. ( This is THE form that must be filled out, the form on page 8: This is THE form that the AKC uses to check your records with their records, not your litter registration forms but this form that lists each dog separately. The Ownership Record of Individual Dog (male or female). AKC will want to see your litter registration forms also. My AKC Inspector told me to read the information on the top of the litter registration and then read the small print on the bottom of the page and then tell him what it meant to me. Okay, the top says, Complete Your Breeder Records! Please fax or mail a copy of this completed Litter Record to the AKC* and the bottom says, *By submitting this information to the AKC, you agree that the AKC has access to and the ability to use this information to encourage registration. This includes, but is not limited to, contacting individuals to whom you transferred a dog or puppy. I read it aloud and then told him it says I am NOT required to submit this information to the AKC, it s my choice. He smiled very big and said, good, you understand you are NOT required to submit the information then! I told him some of my families are very private and do not want their information shared. He said that some things are personal and private. Hmmmm, good to know, as until now I was thinking my not having submitted these forms was the reason for the AKC Inspector s visit to me! The AKC Inspector called me over to his side of the table, asked me to move my chair over, and proceeded to show me his computer screen as he pulled up my records. He then took my individual dog sheet for one of my girls and checked it against the litter registration I had and the litter registration the AKC had and verified the information was the same. He did that with two more of my dogs. He asked me how many dogs I had and I told him. He then checked three dogs microchip numbers. I asked him to tell me exactly what he was looking for and asked his permission to write this article. The AKC Inspector did not inspect either my home or my yard. I invited him to do so but he said he could see all he needed to see from where he was. He said he could see there was fresh water (water in the family room and he could see the patio through the glass doors where the dogs main water bowls are, he could also see the yard), he could see the dogs were healthy, not scratching from bugs nor filled with hot spots, fed adequately. He mentioned there were no flies. He did say many Breeders take great offense to being called a kennel when they raise their puppies in their homes but it is just the terminology that is being used. He had a check list we went over for his AKC Compliance Report. Here is the AKC Compliance Report: Type of Inspection: First Time Inspection Kennel/Pet Shop Name: My name, my AKC Customer number, my address Is Customer in Compliance with AKC Rules and Regulations? If NO, complete the narrative section at bottom. YES, In Compliance, then the AKC Inspector s signature and date These sections of the AKC Compliance Report were left blank: Areas of Non-Compliance: Customer must identify all dogs to a record. Breeder must construct individual dog records. Customer must construct litter record. Customer must meet AKC Dog/care/conditions standards. 4 Page 4 AKC Inspector Calling. continued from page 3 the conditions of the dogs and the summary of the inspections with the record details. The record details include all the dogs I have ever owned that are AKC registered. The AKC Inspector lists that he reviewed three dogs with results that were okay. He then printed out a copy of the report and also a copy of the book at this URL: I asked the AKC Inspector why I was being inspected. He clicked cause on his computer and the word, SEVEN came up. That SEVEN means that I had seven litters in a twelve month period. I told him, that s impossible! He then checked the litters, showed me who they were.and I was being charged with not only my own litters but those of any dogs I co-own. I coown with adult children and a dear friend! We had all had puppies and it totaled seven litters in a twelve month period...and SEVEN is the magic number! At SEVEN litters within a twelve month period a breeder is flagged by the computer and WILL get a visit from your friendly AKC Inspector. I asked what would have happened if I had been unable to meet with him (my husband had dental surgery on top of working six days a week, ten hours a day) on this trip to my home state. The AKC Inspector said, If I was not able to see him then they would try one more time. After three tries by an AKC Inspector to see a breeder, then you get a letter. A letter! My AKC Inspector was very friendly, informative, and I did actually learn from his visit. When doing the individual breeding record sheets for each dog it gave me a very clear picture of that one dog and what she had given to us, as Breeders, of the most precious dogs in the word, our Labrador Retrievers.
