5 SECTION A: COMPREHENSION Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. Transport and road safety History When early humans moved from one place to another, they had to walk. Heavy loads were dragged on sledges and animals, usually donkeys or oxen, were used to help them. A very heavy load was placed on rollers made from tree trunks. This was a very slow job until, about years ago, the wheel was invented. The motor car The big change in road traffic and transport came when a German engineer, Karl Friedrich Benz, produced the world s first petrol-driven car in Karl Friedrich joined forces with Gottlieb Daimler to pioneer the high-speed T-stroke petrol engine. The early cars were called horseless carriages, because they still looked like carriages. They were slow and open to the weather and both the driver and passengers wore long coats and goggles for protection. The early cars were very expensive because they were hand-built by craftsmen, using expensive materials. An American named Henry Ford changed this by building a car that everyone could own. In 1908, he designed the Ford Model T and, more importantly, the world s first assembly line to mass produce a car. By 1927, over of these cars had been sold. Road safety After 1927 road safety became important. More and more roads were built and specific rules applied. Today, road safety is becoming more and more of a concern. Heavy traffic causes accidents and many valuable lives are lost. Every year the traffic department launches campaigns such as Arrive Alive signs next to our roads. 6 Today traffic includes bicycles, cars, trucks, mini bus taxis, buses, pedestrians, trains, aeroplanes and even donkey carts. To lighten the traffic burden of today, many highways have been built to make it easier to drive through cities and other busy areas. 9 SECTION B: LANGUAGE IN CONTEXT QUESTION 5 Look at the following article and answer the questions. Frozen food helps hot animals Animals in Brazil have been feeling the heat, so what better way to cool off than with some ice lollies? Yes, that s right! Keepers at Rio de Janeiro s Jardim Zoological Zoo have been handing out ice-cold treats, including frozen meats and flavoured ice-cream to keep their residents cool. Temperatures have soared as high as 48 C in Brazil this summer, so the zoo has ordered all its food to be delivered in blocks of ice. These frozen fruits and the ice-cream help the animals keep cool in this heat, and also helps against fatigue. Giving them ice-cream refreshes them and increases their physical activity. It stimulates their activity in this environment. Around two tons of food, including fruit such as watermelon and mango, have been distributed daily to the animals at the zoo during the heat wave.
