1 Half Yearly Examination for Primary Schools 2017 Year 5 ENGLISH (Listening Comprehension) Time: 30 minutes Teacher s copy Guidelines for the conduct of the Listening Comprehension Examination ALL INSTRUCTIONS ARE TO BE GIVEN IN ENGLISH Resources Teacher: Reading Text and Questions Each student: Pen and Examination Paper Introduction The teacher in charge distributes the examination papers to the students and asks them to write their name, surname and class on the front cover. THE TEACHER TELLS THE STUDENTS TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. PROCEDURE 5 minutes Students read the questions. 3 minutes The text is read for the first time. 2 Instruction 1: You have five minutes to read the questions silently. Do not write anything. (Students read the questions silently for 5 minutes.) Instruction 2: Listen carefully as I read the passage The beautiful, powerful Jaguar (You may start writing as you listen.) 1. What beautiful cat lives in North and South America and is bigger and tougher than a leopard or mountain lion? If you said jaguar, you re right. The only cat species that are larger are the tiger, the African lion and the endangered Asiatic lion. 2. Most jaguars are orange with black rose-shaped spots. However, there is also a solid black jaguar. Black jaguars have spots too but their spots are hard to see except when in bright sunlight. The colour of their fur serves as camouflage. Lighter coloured jaguars live in more open grassland and forests where they blend in perfectly among the vegetation and shadows. Black jaguars blend in better in the darkest forests and jungles. 3. Like tigers, jaguars live alone most of their lives. Baby jaguars are born in litters of one to four and stay with their protective mother for two years. They are taught how to hunt for food. Then they leave to find their own territories. Jaguars love water. They ll sit half submerged in a cool rainforest stream or pond waiting for prey. 3 4. They will catch water animals like fish, frogs and turtles. Other times they hunt on land and they catch animals like deer. A jaguar s bite is so strong that it can break the tortoise shell. They have even been observed using their jaws to drag heavy prey for over a mile. 5. People often confuse leopards with jaguars. They are both beautiful, spotted cats. However, there are several important differences. Leopards live in Asia and Africa while jaguars are native to the American continent. Jaguars are much bigger and have heavier chests and legs. Moreover, their larger heads have more powerful jaws. 6. Unfortunately, jaguars are in danger of extinction. Mining, farming and other development have destroyed much of their wild habitat. Today some of their habitat is protected. However, they are still being illegally hunted for their beautiful fur and because they are a threat to farmers livestock.
