2 York County Kennel Club of Maine, Inc. Meeting Minutes August 26, 2013 **As there was no meeting in September, I am reprinting the August minutes as they will need to be voted upon at the October meeting. Attendees: Danielle Cooley, Karen Gatchell, Carroll Goodwin, Pollie Goodwin, Steve Hersey, Eileen Kelly, John Kelly, Tracey Levasseur, Susan Metcalf, Charlotte Micheliche, Karen Norteman, Gloria Pasquini, Sarah Todd, Sandy Walton President Steve Hersey called meeting to order at 7:07 PM. Minutes of the Last Meeting Motion to accept: Susan, seconded by Gloria. Corresponding Secretary's Report Susan received information about two upcoming pet expos that support shelters. They are hosted by the same group as last year that couldn't get insurance for working breeds from the venues. Their rates are $250 a booth, and the shows in Bangor and Lewiston so the club is not interested. We can't claim any activities there as educational activities for AKC anyway. Show photographers sent photos of the group and BIS winners from our days at the Cluster shows. Tracey will scan them so they can go on website. Treasurer's Report Karen Gatchell made the motion to accept, seconded by Susan. Committee Reports November 24 Match York County Kennel Club Officers: Stephen Hersey, President sabotea@comcast.net Sandra Bergeron, Vice President sandra2@roadrunner.com Karen Norteman, Recording Secretary seadog@gwi.net Sandra Walton, Treasurer swalton2@maine.rr.com Susan Metcalf, Corresponding Secretary smetcalf@maine.rr.com Board of Directors: Christine Calcinari belhaven.nh@icloud.net Danielle Cooley dannibeth77@hotmail.com Gloria Pasquini bonniebay@roadrunner.com Mary Smith bouvs3@comcast.net Proceeding full steam ahead. Judge selection is in process. The event flyer will be ready for next month's meeting. Help is needed -- Jay if you want to volunteer. The Maine Golden Retriever Club is handling their own entries; Charlotte doesn't need to manage any of their paperwork/fees. People with Goldens may enter both obedience matches, ours and theirs. (Goldens are having an obedience match only.) The Scentinel, September 2013, Page 2
3 Meet the Breeds There are other breeds/clubs and members with dogs who are coming. We need volunteers to come to Meet the Breeds and man the YCKC table. Contact Steve if you can help. Saccarappa is not doing Rally this year. Website It was suggested that we put "last Monday of every month," plus the specific meeting dates, on the website and on Facebook to announce meetings. ( Last Monday is already in both places.) Cluster Shows Judge selection is still ongoing because 2 judges backed out. Next Cluster Committee meeting is 9/10 at 7:30 at YCCU. Club Worker Appreciation Dinner Need to get an out to invited members about it. (Who will do this?) September 13 at 6 PM at the Bull 'n' Claw. Meet at 6-7 for drinks, dinner at 7. There's a signup sheet. Unfinished Business none New Business Carroll says it's time we replaced those old tables. There are 6 new ones and 2 old ones. Carroll moves to throw out 2 old ones and buy 4 new ones. Tracey seconded. Susan will buy them on sale at BJ's. Karen Gatchell showed the club a rosette that the TarTan Gordon Club gives out to every member who gets a title within a year. They would go to owners of dogs only. Has to be confirmed by AKC after filling out form. Should we recognize AKC, CKC, UKC any title, or just AKC titles? Discussion: Should we offer extra stickies for ribbons, host an awards dinner, offer plaques like POC's instead of rosettes? Bring ideas to the next meeting. Sarah will put it in the newsletter. The New Title rosettes that we offered at the Cluster went over very well last year. Charlotte has a slide projector on offer to the club. Any ideas for another guest speaker? John Kelly won the raffle -- he gets $39. Xmas Party We need ideas for a place to hold it. Oak St. Bistro in Alfred? They have a function room. Everybody orders off the menu. We can still have Yankee Swap. Gloria will find out if they can host the party, as well as possible dates. The party is usually on a Sunday around 2 PM. Motion to adjourn: Karen Gatchell, seconded by John Kelly. Next meeting: September 30. Respectfully submitted, Karen Norteman Recording Secretary Do you know a club member who could use a little sunshine? If you know of someone who could use some well wishes for any reason, please don t hesitate to contact the sunshine committee via Sarah Todd. You can reach her by at poc-sec@comcast.net or phone at The Scentinel, September 2013, Page 3

Gloria Wednesday, October 9, The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), which oversees animal imports into Canada, has clarified its regulations regarding the importation of commercial dogs, which includes dogs for shows and exhibitions as well as breeding dogs. FOR DOGS UNDER EIGHT MONTHS OF AGE ENTERING CANADA FROM THE UNITED STATES Dog owners and exhibitors with dogs under eight months of age are now required to present proof of their entry in a dog show, trial, or other competitive event when crossing the American-Canadian border. This is in addition to the already-existing requirements of: A rabies certification (does not apply to animals three months old or younger) a veterinary certificate of health whether or not they are accompanied by their owner a microchip Individuals without proof of entry in a show, trial, or other event are instead required to contact the CFIA Animal Health Area Office for the province they intend to enter at least 30 days before the dog is imported to apply for the permit and allow sufficient time for processing prior to entry into Canada. FOR DOGS OVER EIGHT MONTHS OF AGE ENTERING CANADA FROM THE UNITED STATES Dog owners and exhibitors with dogs over eight months of age are required to present a valid rabies vaccination certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian. (Dogs imported for research purposes must meet more stringent requirements.) Individuals interested in taking dogs into Canada for show, trial, or other event purposes are encouraged to refer to the CFIA s Automated Import Reference System (AIRS) at eng/ / The system provides detailed requirements personalized for each user For more information, contact AKC s Government Relations Department at (919) , or doglaw@akc.org. 5 Let s Think About Hi all -- requesting some ideas for the next meeting October pm -- I brought up the idea of AWARDS for those members who had completed a title on their dog -- we are looking for idea's for the "award item" to be given, would like you all to come to the next meeting and bring your idea's and examples with you -- I brought in a 3 foot ribbon from one of the other clubs I belong to for an example -- but we need more ideas from you and a discussion on this idea...comments and perhaps a photo attached may give us some more idea's if unable to attend -- but we want you to bring an example for us to see in "real time"... thanks in advance for your thoughts -Karen Gatchell The Scentinel, September 2013, Page 5
6 Scarborough, ME Veterinarian Aids National Canine Epilepsy Drug Study Photo: David Harry / The Forecaster Dr. Alan Potthoff of the Main Veterinary Referral Center in Scarborough, MA which is participating in a national field trial of a drug to combat canine epilepsy. The Scentinel, September 2013, Page 6 July 17, 2013 Nancy Floris, a nurse from Amesbury, Mass., has learned when something scary is about to happen with her standard poodle, Spencer. He is like in a trance almost, she said about the distant stare Spencer makes before a seizure that causes him to vomit, clench his jaw, fall over and lose body functions for a minute or more. Spencer, a 5-year-old, 88-pound bundle of friendliness, is now part of a national field study with local input at the Maine Veterinary Referral Center on Technology Drive. Drs. Alan Potthoff and Danielle Eifle are screening dogs from throughout northern New England as part of a field study of medicine to combat seizures caused by idiopathic epilepsy. Research indicates as many as 780,000 dogs are diagnosed with the condition annually, and there is evidence the epilepsy has hereditary factors in breeds including beagles, border collies, Bernese mountain dogs and golden and Labrador retrievers. Potthoff said seizures often first occur in dogs 1 to 5 years old, and often occur early in the morning. The sleeping brain seems to be the most sensitive, he said. Floris said the seizures are frightening and unpredictable. I ve had dogs all my life, and never had one with a seizure disorder, she said. It seemed like forever, even it was just a minute or two. Potthoff, who has operated the clinic in Scarborough since 2007 and been in practice in the Portland area for more than 20 years, said he could not name the pharmaceutical company conducting the study for data to refer to the federal Food and Drug Administration. But he said more dogs are needed for the study through early next year. The study is being conducted in 14 states with stringent guidelines for participation. The efficacy of the pills is best determined from as large a sample size as possible, Potthoff said. Dogs at least 4 months old, weighing 3.3 pounds, not lactating, pregnant or suspected of being pregnant, can be screened if they have a history of seizures. Dogs must be evaluated within seven days of their most recent seizure. Dogs meeting initial qualifications are given physical and neurological exams, blood and urine tests, and an MRI exam. The screenings and tests are free, and dog owners can be reimbursed up to $150 for travel expenses. Visits to the Maine Veterinary Referral Center are outpatient, Potthoff said, and can be scheduled seven days a week. Two thirds of the dogs in the study receive medication; the remainder get a placebo, and Potthoff and Eifle do not know what is being administered. The client is very involved as well, Potthoff said. They must document administering pills and show medicine has properly been dispensed. In day-to-day practice, the Maine Veterinary Referral Center provides advanced care for animals, based on referrals. We do not do general practice work, Potthoff said. How to become part of the study The study is open to dogs of all breeds. To qualify, dogs must: Be at least 4 months of age. Have received no more than 7 days of prior treatment with an anti-seizure medication. Weigh at least 3.3 pounds. Have no previous history of seizure clusters or status epilepticus. Not be lactating, pregnant, or suspected to be pregnant. Meet all other study requirements (which will be explained by the investigator when the dog is evaluated). For more information, call , ext. 207, visit or ask your veterinarian. He said his practice was sought out for the field study. They were looking for neurologists around the country and there are not a lot of us, Potthoff said. To be considered for the study, dog owners can contact the national field study organizers at , ext. 207 or visit the study website. seizures.com/ SOURCE: The Forecaster
