1 Irish Setter Club of Michigan News and Views August 2011 From our Editor GREETINGS FELLOW MEMBERS! My style is not to dwell on the negative but knowing how much our country is hurting makes one wish all these problems could be swept away with a magic wand. That is not going to happen, but believing in our country is like believing in our Irish, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel and much joy following years of hard work. We can support our troops who sacrifice their lives in order to make our country safer. Our hearts and prayers go out to the 30 troops and the one specially trained dog, who lost their lives helping others. We can support our club members the same way and let those that are hurting know we are thinking of them. We can support our club and all the hard workers who make all the events possible. Our fall Specialty is a biggie for the club (September 24 & 25) and all members are invited to attend and lend a hand if they can. We have a great venue for everyone to enjoy and you can come and enjoy the fun even if you do not have a dog!!! We hope to see the young and the old and those in between. It would be wonderful to see our friends and welcome some of the new dog owners into our club. Thank you, Barbara Riegle, Editor S P O R T I N G D OG J U D G E S S E M I N A R D E B B I E D A V I S On June 25th the ISCM participated in the Michigan Sporting Dog Judges Seminars. Debbie Davis and Martina Friedeberg presented the ISCA Judges Education presentation to over 15 judges throughout the day. We had several members who brought dogs for the hands on demonstration. The dogs the judges evaluated ranged in age from 4 months to 7 years old. Janet Parker and Debbie Davis participating in the field demonstration which the judges thoroughly enjoyed. It was nice that the judges got to see our dogs work in the field. The judges that attended were from all over the United States. The Michigan Sporting Dog Club did a excellent job with this event. We would like to thank Debbie, Martina, Bob Hallett, and Patti Vossen for bringing dogs for the judges to examine. We got excellent reviews of the program and everyone had a great time. We hope to participate again next year. 4 More photos from the Judges Seminar Dan and Ann Graham reported that 11 year old Cassidy Collins asked for donations to our Irish Setter Rescue instead of presents for herself. What a great kid! Her family has a rescue from our club. Later in July she and her family came for a visit to see the puppies and to deliver nearly $300 worth of food and money to the club. A big thank you goes out to Cassidy and her family for their generosity and love for the welfare of the Irish Setter. Also, Debbie Davis placed a dog and sent $75 donation to rescue. There are no Irish in Rescue currently. The senior home Joan Toy is in is looking for a new dog, preferably another Irish. Contact Gloria at if you have a candidate. The lovely male "Atty" who was in rescue was placed with a nice couple in Western New York who have had Irish "forever". They are flat nuts about him! Atty August News and Views 4

5 M EMBER C O N T R I B U T I O N S Barbara Riegle I found this article in one of the magazines of the local paper. The article, titled "What Our Dogs Think Of Us" quoted some fascinating information from Veterinary Behaviorist, Karen Overall. I will include some of her comments. Scientists for years have been trying to explain what makes a dog save a human from a disaster. The answer seems to be that the dog totally loves us and like people who will place their own lives in jeopardy for those we love, so will dogs. But are dogs truly capable of love? Because we have selected(over many years) for a close bonding relationship with dogs, as a result, the neurochemistry in dogs' brains is nearly identical to ours. It turns out people and dogs both have corresponding rising oxytocin when they are having a behavior. Dogs are creatures of habit and also extremely observant. Being social, dogs tend to "tell us" whenever there is a change in the environment. The article goes on to say that dogs are keen observers of cues which we are unaware we are even sending. It is not what we say, it is how we act and probably how we smell. We still have a lot to learn about what dogs really think, but it is likely that dogs understand us better than we understand them. But do our dogs ALL unconditionally love us? Probably not. Just because we are people some of us confound and confuse our dogs but they just hang in there, however, some dogs have a stronger bond with their people than others. Barb Mooney Just arrived home from the Ann Arbor Kennel Club shows in Monroe MI. What a beautiful site to have a dog show. Went with my friend, Karen Lause (who is the proud owner of my Cherryhill boy, Korrie), and neither of us have ever been to this show before. But it won't be the last time. Only negative thing that happen to me was the loss of one of my Cabalas chairs. Left it at ringside for the following day! My fault. Saturday, under judge Mr. Jamie Hubbard, started with my boy, Kacey, going Open Dog out of 5 dogs in the class; his littermate Korrie took 3rd place. Kacey went on to win Reserve. My girl, Becca went 3rd in her class of 7 bitches. Sunday, under judge. William R. Russell, was a better day - especially for Becca. She won Open Bitch out of 7 and on to Winners Bitch for a 3 pt. major. She then went on to Best of Winners. Kacey went 2nd with his brother Korrie getting 3rd out of 6 dogs showing in Open Dog. Kacey again went Reserve (he has become my Reserve King!!). This is Becca's second major and she only needs 4 single points to finish her CH. Boy was she "on" today! She has a most gorgeous gait and can easily rule the ring! Both were shown to perfection by Sara Armstrong who is actually a Gordon Setter breeder and handler. Sara had never met my dogs under Saturday about 45 minutes before going in to the ring. She did a super job with both of my 'kids'. Thank you so much Sara. Becca (Cherryhill Moon & Stars), Kacey (Cherryhill Hunter's Moon), and Korrie (Cherryhill Over The Moon) are all out of my CH Rockherin American Classic (Kari) and CH Courtwood Seeker (Harry). They were bred by Ed, me, Katherine Wheatley and Debra Davis. As a footnote, Debbie's boy, Orchard Farm N Silkroad Fletch went Winners Dog today for a major too. Dan Graham Ann and I had dinner last night at a place that would be perfect for our meetings up this way. Hollywood Diner has redecorated and revised their menu (pasta is their Thurs. special) they have a side room that can be reserved for meetings and they don t close till 11PM on weekdays. It is much quieter and way cleaner than Logan s. Anyway, we reserved the room for September. Hollywood Diner is at the Corunna Rd. Exit off I-75 just NE of the corner. 6 M EMBER C O N T R I B U T I O N S ( C O N T I N U E D ) Jackie Shelest With the hot summer we have had I thought that this article was a good thing to have on hand. This article was published on Setters-L with permission to cross post/distribute by Elaine Starry. What is heatstroke? Dog Heatstroke Survival Guide Know how to treat and prevent this dangerous condition Robert Newman In simple terms, heatstroke occurs when a dog loses its natural ability to regulate its body temperature. Dogs don't sweat all over their bodies the way humans do. Canine body temperature is primarily regulated through respiration (i.e., panting). If a dog's respiratory tract cannot evacuate heat quickly enough, heatstroke can occur. To know whether or not your dog is suffering from heatstroke (as opposed to merely heat exposure), it's important to know the signs of heatstroke. A dog's normal resting temperature is about to degrees Fahrenheit. Once a dog's temperature rises above 105 degrees, physiological changes start to take place, and the dog begins to experience the effects of heatstroke. At 106 to 108 degrees, the dog begins to suffer irreversible damage to the kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract, heart and brain. If a dog is experiencing heatstroke, you may observe excessive panting; hyperventilation; increased salivation; dry gums that become pale, grayish and tacky; rapid or erratic pulse; weakness; confusion; inattention; vomiting; diarrhea; and possible rectal bleeding. If the dog continues to overheat, breathing efforts become slowed or absent, and finally, seizures or coma can occur. The amount of damage a dog sustains when stricken with heatstroke depends on the magnitude and duration of the exposure. The longer and more severe the exposure, the worse the damage will be. What to do Pay attention to your dog. Recognizing the symptoms of heatstroke and responding quickly is essential for the best possible outcome. Get into the shade. If you think your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move it into a shaded area and out of direct sunlight. Apply cool water to the inner thighs and stomach of the dog, where there's a higher concentration of relatively superficial, large blood vessels. Apply cool water to the foot pads, as well. Use running water. A faucet or hose is the best way to wet down your dog's body. Never submerge your dog in water, such as in a pool or tub - this could cool the dog too rapidly, leading to further complications, including cardiac arrest and bloating. Use cool - not cold - water. Many people make the mistake of using cold water or ice to cool the dog. When faced with a dog suffering from heatstroke, remember that the goal is to cool the dog. Using ice or extremely cold water is actually counterproductive to this process because ice and cold water cause the blood vessels to constrict, which slows blood flow, thus slowing the cooling process. Don't cover the dog. One of the keys to successfully cooling your dog is ensuring the water being placed on the dog can evaporate. Never cover an overheated dog with a wet towel or blanket. This inhibits evaporation and creates a sauna effect around your dog's body. Likewise, don't wet the dog down and put it into an enclosed area, such as a kennel. Any air flow during the cooling process is helpful in reducing the dog's body temperature. Sitting with the wet dog in a running car with the air conditioner blowing is an ideal cooling situation. Keep the dog moving. It's important to try to encourage your dog to stand or walk slowly as it cools down. This is because the circulating blood tends to pool in certain areas if the dog is lying down, thus preventing the cooled blood from circulating back to the core. Allow the dog to drink small amounts of water. Cooling the dog is the first priority. Hydration is the next. Don't allow the dog to gulp water. Instead, offer small amounts of water that's cool, but not cold. If the dog drinks too much water too rapidly, it could lead to vomiting or bloat. Avoid giving human performance drinks. Performance beverages designed for humans are not recommended because they are not formulated with the canine's physiology in mind. If you can't get an overheated dog to drink water, try offering chicken- or beefbased broths. August News and Views 6

7 Dog Heatstroke Survival Guide (continued) See a veterinarian Once your dog's temperature begins to drop, cease the cooling efforts and bring the dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Your dog's temperature should be allowed to slowly return to normal once cooling has begun. A dog that's cooled too quickly may become hypothermic. Even if your dog appears to be fully recovered, the veterinarian needs to check to determine if the heatstroke caused any damage to your dog's kidneys and liver. The effects of heatstroke can continue for 48 to 72 hours longer, even if your dog appears normal. William Grant, DVM, a veterinarian for 20 years and former president of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association, has treated hundreds of cases of heatstroke, ranging from mild to fatal. According to Grant, the most common cause of death following heatstroke is disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (blood coagulating throughout the body), or DIC, which can occur hours or days after the heatstroke episode. DIC can also be caused by pyometra or septicemia, but Grant says heatstroke is the most common cause. "Once a dog develops DIC, it may bleed in the thorax, abdomen, nose and intestine," Grant says. "Once the blood-clotting factors are consumed, there is an inability of the blood vessels to prevent leaking; the condition is almost always fatal." For this reason, follow-up veterinary care is essential following a heatstroke episode, even if your dog seems to be completely fine. Prevention is the best medicine. The best treatment for heatstroke is prevention. Especially during the summer months, it's essential to be aware of the potential for heatstroke. Knowing the signs of heatstroke, and taking the necessary steps to prevent it, will ensure your dog can have a safe and active life year-round.
